    Ask for an itemized receipt for the hospital bill. They throw in random charges and when you get the itemized bill it’s lower than it would be if you didn’t ask for it. 💗 so glad the babies are okay!

      @@Iluvhorses122 Lmao, it's still a joke even if you have a job and especially so when compared to other developed nations (US is around the top of the list for most expensive, poorest access AND poorest health outcomes). Also re the "not if you have a job" comment, the US system doesn't account for people who work in alternative jobs (for example, youtubers). Even if you do have health insurance, the US has each private health insurance negotiate medication prices so usually they're still extremely high when compared to countries like Australia where the government specifically negotiates a set low price. Truthfully, there is no positive argument for the US healthcare system.

    I would listen to poison control versus the doctor. Doctor’s don’t have as much knowledge of levels of toxicity that the poison center does. While you may think it was a lot of money to take them in for the tests at the hospital, it is always better to be safe than sorry, especially since they aren’t even 2 yet. I have a 13 month old and I would definitely take my baby to the hospital too because you just don’t know and they are so small!

      I would trust a doctor over a poison control worker for these reasons; doctors go through much more rigorous training, they have more specific/accurate information on the patients, and they have more experience with the outcome of the treatment they give.

    • @shannonkelly1609
      @shannonkelly1609 4 года назад +61

      @@sarahjane262 Doctors actually call poison control for the information on the drug, any antidotes, what to look for, toxicity levels, etc. So, while the doctors are the ones who are able to medically evaluate the patient's current status, they actually are not always the ones with the most knowledge over a potential poisoning/overdose. If you are ever in an ER (hopefully you won't be), you will often hear pages for a doctor with poison control on the line. Moral of the story, call poison control and seek medical attention.

      @@shannonkelly1609 interesting! I didn’t know that. Thankfully I don’t have a lot of experience in ERs. It sounds like poison control workers and doctors are able to best diagnose and treat patients together.

    • @BhappyD
      @BhappyD 4 года назад +10

      Sarah Jane Just replying and echoing what Shannon said, it’s extremely common for doctors to call poison control for information. A few years back I ended up in the ER with a critical set of symptoms that doctors were trying to figure out, and one of the avenues they explored was if my body was improperly metabolizing some of the medications I was on potentially causing my body to improperly hold onto them resulting in the possibility that I had a toxic level of them in my system. That didn’t end up being the cause of my symptoms, but almost immediately the doctors working on me in the ER called and spoke at length with poison control, even having poison control send a printout walkthrough of the steps of what to look out for and how to manage the issue going forward if the toxicity was found to be the problem. Before that happened, I would have never known or guessed that poison control had superior knowledge over doctors about poisonings and toxicity, even to the point of doctors fully relying on them for information. It’s quite fascinating, and is also good information for the public to know that calling poison control is putting you in contact with the top experts in the field!

    I am a pediatrician that works in a pediatric ER and you were 100% right to take them in. Each person metabolizes medications differently. So one bottle to one kid may end up not being toxic where to another kid it could. Poison control was correct to send you in. I take any Tylenol ingestion very seriously as I’ve seen devastating outcomes. That doctor could say they would have been okay drinking the entire bottle only because she knew their Tylenol levels at that point! And maybe on a different day, a whole bottle wouldn’t be okay for them because it depends on so many factors. And don’t beat yourself up over this. We see accidental ingestions all the time. Use it as an opportunity to educate other parents and to re-evaluate your baby proofing like you did!

      my 2yr old once bit the top plastic cap of one right in half 😬 I had let him play with it right in front of me, knowing it was shut and I was right there. so I literally saw him split it and the medicine pour all out, a small amount in his mouth. Not very smart of me to let him in the first place but I learned my lesson there. Those things may be child safe but they’re not foolproof.

      She also needs to get rid of the blinds with the cords hanging down in the window. They are a strangulation hazard. Babies and toddlers get tangled in them and then quietly suffocate. No one would even know until it was too late. Very dangerous. Just get a pull down shade instead.

    The dosage on the bottle, where it says the maximum amount of tylenol that is for their age or weight is actually about a fourth of what is too much. They do it that way so that you do have room, to mix up or dose one time too many on accident and not lethally hurt your child.
    I had never known that myself, and wouldnt have known that had I not taken medical classes for AUA and CNA, phlebotomy and laboratory testing courses..

    Hi Sophie, med student here. First of all, don't beat yourself up, this could happen to anyone! Sometimes toddlers work in magical ways, for example I managed to open a babyproof sanitizing alcohol bottle at 2 years old. 😀 Although I'm european, pretty sure the hospital had to take so many tests and run this whole course because it's now their responsibility if anything happens when they let you go home with the boys. They kind of have to make sure, even if it's not a logical possibility that they have been poisoned. I'm so glad you're all okay. You're doing amazing, love you.
