Careful with the chain lube-it only needs lubrication within the rollers of the links. I’d suggest carefully squeezing a smaaaall amount on the lower part of the chain along its length while back pedaling. Then, wipe off any excess with a rag. This gives you great control for dispensing, gets it to where it needs to go, and doesn’t leave excess to stick to gravel dust, sand, and dirt. Plus, it makes your bottle of chain lube last that much longer!

correct, lubing the outside of the chain doesn't make any sense. even more, lube on the outside will attract more dust and increase wear.
