After 5 decades of experience with the sewers in this country, I have never seen an instance where the sewage burst forth from the ground like it seems to on a daily basis in the UK. We wouldn't stand for it here.

This kind of shite buildup doesn't happen overnight.. Why this isn't some sort of public health violation where the Neighborhood is concerned is beyond me..
I really think UK’s sewage system can’t handle todays current society who are using so called flushable wipes instead of regular toilet paper. Everytime you see them unclog you inevitably see wipes
