    It was DEFINITELY not the metal. The exact same thing will happen on a wooden boat.
    The expression of "I stopped the boat" does NOT exist at the sea.
    The waves will shake your drone relative to the gps coordinates (especially the "Z") the currents will move the boat X,Y.
    I really don't know why you stick to the wrong answer so desperately.
    Watch your own video and analyse it at 1:27 (a so called stopped boat) and at 7:03 (a pure proof what is really happening)

    Brett, I am pretty sure its the momentum of the boat that was impacting the take-off of the drone. Its not likely the pitch or anything. Think about it this way, if you are trying to jump straight up from a moving car, you will have a momentum in the opposite direction of the car, i.e. backwards. There is your explanation of what was happening to your drone.

      It’s not the metal. I’ve flown from boats a ton. So, boats are never still, even if you think they are. The GPS is programmed to stabilize flight and if you are coasting even .5 knots the drone will still correct flight immediately on launch and fly in the direction to keep it GPS static. Hope that helps. Always hand launch and catch. 👍🏼

    • @deanjericevic8912
      @deanjericevic8912 4 года назад

      @@ryansouthwell It is an established fact that the free electrons in metals strongly reflect microwaves & these are what your information from the controller to the drone are encoded on. They would garble the signal, so it is correct to use a hand held take off & land. The further away from the boat you take off & land the better. It is also a type of inverse distance square that the "garbbling" effect comes into play. The closer you are to the metal the more disproportionately stronger garbled becomes the signal. On land, when flying your drone take off & land well away from large metal objects.

    One more tip; change how the drone reacts to “lost connection” from “return to home” to “hover”.

    The reason the drone was flying back when you tried to take off is because the drone set its home point, which since the boat was moving forward, you were leaving the home point behind. The drone was trying to hurry to the home point. Look how fast the pro2 moves back compared to the speed the boat is moving. It’s the same speed.

    It wasn't taking off correctly from the deck because they are designed to hover as soon as you take off, or fly straight up. That "straight up" coordinate is determined through gps, and the boat is moving, so that takeoff gps coordinate is now behind the boat by the time you lift off since its moving.

    Good video. I was launching and landing on banka boats in the Philippines. They have about a two foot wide triangular area in the front, with wood going up a couple inches on the sides. My boats were always anchored. Landing on a fast moving boat would be crazy in my opinion. Takeoffs were fairly easy but on landing, the drone would move at the last minute so I damaged 3 propellers. After that I decided to try a hand landing on land and it worked good. I flipped the drone over to turn off the propellers like you did. You need to have obstacle avoidance turned off when you do this. DJI will tell you not to do a hand landing or launch, but I feel it's safe. Anyway good video.

    1. Learn to properly fly with a cheap drone without GPS, optical-flow, or even altitude hold. You do not get any skills flying with GPS. And you are going to need a lot of skills.
    2. If you're not rich, don't fly a Mavic off a boat.
    3. In fact don't use DJI drones at all. Because they don't have GPS follow-me. Unless you use Litchi or Maven or Dronelink. Yes you can use active-track or fly it manually. But without follow-me the drone can lose you, or you can lose the drone.
    4. Any drone should have a home-update and/or return-to-controller option. Plus the option to disable return-to-home to where it took off. Because that will be water.

    I think you might not have considered a thing, while trying to explain the cause of the problem while taking off.
    There might be some interference with the metal in the boat, but I don't think that affects the drone like that.
    For me the cause is more likely, that the boat is moving. Since DJI drones use GPS, it tries to stay on that exact spot; it doesn't expect that you are on a moving something. So since the boat is moving forward, the point it tries to keep will always be behind the boat, hence its motion to the back of the boat.
    I have only seen footage, where you are trying to take off while the boat is moving, so for me this explanation seems more likely, but I might be wrong.
    You could try it on a stopped boat, or when you take off from your hands and the boat is moving, you should be able to feel, that it tries to get out of your hands, in the opposite of your moving direction.

    The problem you're coming into with launching and the drone moving is the GPS lock. Your drone the moment it leaves the ground is designed to hold position, the boat will always be moving slightly unless anchored due to winds and currents. In your case you guys were still moving at 7-8knots and every time you took off the drone was trying to stay in it's GPS position so it is moving. Best way to launch from a boat is to launch from the hand, be clear of the gunwales and you're good. Also always launch from the side of the boat that's not he backside of the drift meaning you want to launch and have the boat moving away from your drones GPS position otherwise your boat will hit the drone if you don't get out of the way fast. The rule is clear the gunwales and then go up once the boat is out of the way.

    can you comment about down sensors drone and water relation? You suggest positioning at border of boat... don't have interference problem with reflections surface?

    Aloha,
    Need a bit of clarification when you say turn off the Blue Tooth/Wifi are you referring to every phone on board (if possible) or just the phone being used with the drone. Also, I want to keep my boat Garmin GPS Plotter/Navigation on while underway (too many reefs here) so do you have any experience with what happens when that GPS device is live and you are working with the Drone?

    • @brettgaramella
      @brettgaramella  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, turn off the bluetooth on the device you're using with your drone. I don't think that GPS device should have too much affect on it, but you could try with it on versus off to see. Just follow the other tips I recommend and you should be fine. Stay away from metal as much as possible. And do your compass calibration before flying it.

    Flying in boats is difficult to non-experts pilots, you need perfect control for taking off and landing specially with those fishing poles or metal interference. Great video Brett!

    I think the main factor that the drone doesnt take off properly on bed of the boat is because of the waves. It tilts boat and same as the drone upon takeoff

    Hi!
    HELP#
    I always fly my drones over the bay, since here in Miami Beach, FL, where I live, is a crowded area with many tall buildings.
    I already crashed on the water the Mavic Mini and the Mini 2. My mistake is that: While using the left joystick to rotate, I keep lower the altitude by mistake and forget to check it. I get very distracted looking at the video images.
    Why the drone doesn't have a "Low Terrain warning" or "minimin altitude reached warning" that I could preset to, let's say 10 or 20 meters, so it sends me a warning when it gets below that altitude. Especially over the bay waters where I can't receive it?
    Thank you!

    • @brettgaramella
      @brettgaramella  3 года назад

      The downward sensors have a hard time seeing the water because of the reflection. It is best to always keep visual line of sight with your drone when you're flying low over the water - don't worry so much about your monitor because you can always redo the shot but once your drone crashes, well...

    Not going with a flotation system because you're certain in your abilities is the difference between confidence and arrogance. Because when something happens you didn't expect and the drone hits the water and sinks you'll suddenly realize how little control over things you really have.

    On take off vertically from a moving boat, or even holding the drone while walking, the drone wants to stay at the same GPS coordinates. So as soon as the drone take off it wants to go back to the place it was. It has very little to do with metal. Try walking while holding the drone for takeoff and you will feel it tugging to go back.

    • @brettgaramella
      @brettgaramella  3 года назад

      I understand your point, but I discussed this with the drone techs I worked with who know a lot more than I do and they said it is the metal. In addition, after stopping the boat, it did not work close to the metal but worked fine with hand launch. So it is definitely the metal from my experience.

      Yeah let me know. Remember, the farther away you can launch and land your drone away from metal the better. Hard to do on a boat but it's possible. By the way, my mom's grandmother is from Aland islands... been there once, was really beautiful.

    Tried for the 1st time today. The drone went strait for an antenna and bounced into the water. Even if I saw your video afterwards, I did basically all your tips. I wouldn't recommend doing it on a small boat, you put yourself in the mercy of your luck.

    • @brettgaramella
      @brettgaramella  4 года назад

      That's a bummer. Did you successfully do a compass calibration before takeoff. I also hand-launched over the edge of the boat and warned against antennas in my video. What drone were you using?

    • @florentdevier
      @florentdevier 4 года назад

      @@brettgaramella Don't worry mate i'm not blaming you, i saw you video afterwards. But it's important to specify it's not easy AT ALL to do a boat take off, or landing in a boat. If i were to go back and do it today, knowing my mistake i'd still be very uncomfortable (as a matter of fact i will not try it again on a small boat). The risk is just too high to fail, and if you do it's 2k€ straight to the water. Even if you are careful / gifted enough it only needs a wave, an unexpected wind, to kill your drone. I had the M2 pro
