Nick, that is indeed a slick jig for putting a chamfer on the end of a dowel. Thanks for posting this because I’ll be needing to chamfer the end of some dowels in a few weeks. In the past I’ve just free handed them. This jig will make them look a lot better.
Thanks for posting this Video Nick, my son & I utilized your trials & errors & were able to put a chamfer on the dowels we needed tor Workbench we built. Good stuff!
Nick: What a clever use of scrap lumber! Jigs and things really speed up your work! These tips are almost as useful as your project videos! Thanks for posting!
much appreciate Keith - glad you worded it that way - I've had a lot of people asking for more videos so this was my first attempt to make one from something I never would have shown before
Thanks - it’s actually projects like this that I’m trying to include more of to be able to make more videos - Might not be a complete project but it’s whatever im working on at the time
Thanks, Nick. I had no idea that those belts at markets were for finger strengthening. If you put objects in the way, you could even create an obstacle course!!!
That is a great simple jig to get quick consistent results (whatever the shape). I had a project where I needed to round over one end of a bunch of dowels. I used my router table and its fence as my V-groove and the bearing on the round-over bit as the stop block. To make a shorter piece, I did the round-over on a long dowel, then cut it to length, and then smoothed the opposite end by hand.
I’ve done a lot of bevels on dowels but mostly free hand bevels never thought of making a dowel beveling jig. Sure makes all your bevels nice and uniform bevels. Great beveling tip Nick can’t wait use this idea next time I’m beveling dowels. Just another great tip from you Bro... awesome 👍👍
Thanks Nick, another freehander here. But the few minutes invested in the jig is less time looking for the one that flew out of my hand. Thanks again for another helpful tip. Dean Kramasz
I made something similar for rounding dowels over on my router table. I only needed to round over one specific size of dowel, so I just drilled a hole close to the same diameter as the dowels through two scraps of plywood, clamped one to the table, and used a round-over bit with a bearing in my router. Used the smaller piece as a holder for the dowel so I could keep it pressed down with one hand and rotate the dowel with the other...Butted the end of the dowel against the bearing on the router bit through the fixed piece, then just adjusted the height of the round-over bit until I got the size I wanted. I didn't have to worry about constantly rotating the dowel, cause the bearing would keep too much material from being removed. It worked surprisingly well. I used the same technique---actually the same exact pieces of plywood for the same dowels---to put a groove around the circumference of the dowels spaced back from the end.
05:09 Cashier at WallMart: _"Oh, Mr. Ferry - you're making all these dowels in your shop [don't deny it - I've seen it on YT], and now you're doing an extra workout on our treadmill."_ 06:28 To me, it's a *chamfer* going around. Looks pretty & does the job. Period.
Thanks for the love for us long time watchers. LOL The "comments" bit was funny. Also was thinking that this jig would work just fine on copper pipe or anything soft like that as well as wood.
'....finger treadmill!' LOL Yeah, mine are looking a little chubby!! The possibilities with this simple jig are many! Using different sized spindles, you could create some interesting concave-ish ends....or with a vertical belt (or disc) sander (I've got one of those nifty Rigid spindle & belt units!), you could get the 'pencil sharpener' effect, at a variety of angles! Cool idea...Thanks, Nick! :-)
Nick: awesome little jig. If you want to create true chamfers/bevels, you could use a flat part with a glued sanding pad or disc and a dowel in the rear of it, chuck it into the drill press and then angle your jig and go at it, then people would say "Wow, that is a true multi purpose chamfer/bevel/cove/hollow-ing jig" and then you'd be a genius ! Nah seriously its nice to see you doing more videos, it was sad to see you leave for like 3 months:(
I could call it the world's bestest you won't believe have to watch amazing thing-a-ma-jig.....jig - as for the months off thing, many reasons behind that but oddly enough this project is sort of the beginning of me trying to make more videos by showing stuff I otherwise wouldn't think to show - might not all be in depth projects but just what I have going on in the shop at the time
Nice little jig there Nick, and who would have thought that those things in the Supermarket, were for exercising your fingers? so that's why you pay? ha ha ha. Barry (ENG)
exactly - I oddly don't have a ton of jigs but I have friends with probably over 100 jigs and templates - now if I had that many clamps I'd be good to go
That would be a good start for the clamps. You know as well as I that one glue up always comes up that you run out of clamps. Have a great day really glad your making more videos. We all kinda missed you.
thanks - it's actually this particular project that had me rethinking a couple things on my channel - I do get people messaging me from time to time asking about more videos - so when I knew I wanted to re-make this jig I figured I would film it and make a video - might not be complete projects all the time but this is a much better idea of what I am actually working on day to day
Some of the best products are simple ones. I could have used that when I was beveling, no, chamfering, no, I have it, breaking the corner edge of some dowels a while ago. But alas, I didn't and still don't have a spindle sander, and I hadn't made my spindle sander adapter for my drill press at that time.
funny you mention Spaceballs - I was writing an article the other day and referencing Spaceballs when talking about the rubber spaceballs used for frame and panel doors
Can you please show us how to turn our router tables into WIFI dust collection as you have? Now, I am going to the grocery store for some finger exercise. Thanks, Nick.
Cut one dowel lenghtwise (or sand a flat spot on two dowels to glue), glue the two pieces parallel on a base and you will have a perfekt rail to ride the dowels without v-groove router bit.
dang - you missed the big prize by only one! you get second prize which is an caps THAK YOU and two thumbs up.....crap I forgot how to add those on desktop - scratch that you will have to settle on the THANK YOU!!
Great jig -- but that's not a bevel... ;) Never mind that -- I'm trying to figure out how the hell I commented on this video 4 days ago... that's a real head scratcher... I even checked my sent items in email and found nothing -- NOTHING !! ;)
Well, I've been accused of doing some odd or strange things in my sleep, but never commenting on future videos... I guess there's a first for everything... lol

no problem - glad to hear I could help with an upcoming project
Thanks for posting this Video Nick, my son & I utilized your trials & errors & were able to put a chamfer on the dowels we needed tor Workbench we built. Good stuff!
Awesome - glad I could help - was it for handles or vice?
Nick: What a clever use of scrap lumber! Jigs and things really speed up your work! These tips are almost as useful as your project videos! Thanks for posting!
much appreciate Keith - glad you worded it that way - I've had a lot of people asking for more videos so this was my first attempt to make one from something I never would have shown before
And I even fixed my bad spelling of lumber!
I didn't see it when it was wrong so I had no idea until you said it haha
Nice. Simple. Exactly what I was looking for. Glad to see I am not the only one with a messy shop. LOL. Thanks Nic.
my shop always seems to be in a different state of mess
@@NickFerry Hope you didn't think I was being negative. Too much negativity in the world. You are a pleasure to watch.
haha no not at all - takes a lot more to get me offended - I did stand up for a few years
Nice video Nick. I like that it was quick and simple.
thanks Russ!
Nice to see you around once again Nick.
Thanks - it’s actually projects like this that I’m trying to include more of to be able to make more videos - Might not be a complete project but it’s whatever im working on at the time
Great ideas and quality performance! Thanks!
Genius man! I love this. Definitely going to use this when making blocks of the cylinder variety for my kids
Thanks brother - it’d be perfect for that
Super creative and extremely helpful as an idea. You've just inspired me to do this! Thank you.
Thanks for letting me know, I’m glad I could help lend some inspiration - ✌🏼
Ha ha ha this so much fun to watch, tnx Nick and also those bevel slammers that spice it up. Tnx for sharing it man!!
haha - glad you got a kick out of it
Thank you Nick. Nice jig. I made one and use it now for a project that I make several of. Makes a nice finished look.
Very cool to hear, glad it’s working out well for you
Was about to start figuring out how to make one and I thought “someone on RUclips has already made this” so appreciate the video!
My pleasure, you’ll have to let me know how it goes
Nick, Always enjoy your videos! Nice and simple, but clever at the same time...
thank Bud - I know I get over think things too at times
Dude! That’s brilliant! Good to have you back
thanks - feels good to be back
Good idea! Gonna make one. I've wanted one for a while.
Perfect timing then
Thanks, Nick. I had no idea that those belts at markets were for finger strengthening. If you put objects in the way, you could even create an obstacle course!!!
When there's pudding or Jell-O involved, it's a Double Dare Obstacle Course! On your mark, Get set, GO!
I think my fingers would purposely trip into the jello/pudding. They have no self control.

good way to go about it - something to always remember, doing milling on larger material and then cutting it off to size
I like my fingers. And I have a healthy respect/fear toward my router and saws.
Thanx bro! Really needed! I took some fingerprints off my thumb before i see this!
My pleasure - My fingertips have seen some sandpaper too 😂
Nice. Quick project and great results.
thanks - it's always nice to be able to knock out a quick porject
Great little jig. Thanks Nick for the tip
Thanks for checking it out!

Nick Ferry ya the comment I made about Bevels. 😂😂
Love it! Always great to see your process and the final result. Cheers, Nick!
thanks - and always fun to try and come up with stuff
Simple and useful! Another great shop tip from Nick! :)

Very cool - I have a similar technique for drilling into dowels - as far as the holder anyway
Fabulous work
👊🏻👊🏻
I dont think i would have thought of that. Thanks for the jig tip!
no problem - it serves its purpose
Love the way you clean your table just enough to work on your next project, it reminds me of someone( oh that's me)😂 Big fan Nick!!!!
haha - yup - sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do
Another GREAT idea, Nick! This could be used (with a small mod) for placing a chamfer on the end of a table leg. Perfect! Thanks Nick.
for sure - would be perfect for my walnut slab bench I'm working on if I ever finish it
Nice one Nick!
Thanks brother!!!
Thanks Nick, great jig to add to the arsenal. :-)
no doubt - for an odd jig I have 3 projects coming up to use it on

Great simple jig!! Thanx
My pleasure
Simple & easy. Cool!
👍👍
At 5:09 reminds me of the Adams Family lmao. Great little jig Nick
Lol I thought the same when editing
Good idea. Quick and simple 👍
thanks John!
Cool. Congrat. From Brazil

Nice little dowel jig Nick! Thank you for always sharing.😎👍JP
thanks buddy!
You're very welcome Nick! 😎
I’ll be making on this week!
cool - let me know if it works out for you!

I wish I saw this a month ago for one of my projects!
Always seems to happen that way - you got it in your tool bag now though

Life happens!
You got a little off subject but I am going to try it the finger tread mill ,Ok and the dowel jig to lol
I never get off subject from woodworking, which reminds me, did I ever mention my swimming lessons when I was 7? Haha
Nice little jig there Nick, and who would have thought that those things in the Supermarket, were for exercising your fingers? so that's why you pay? ha ha ha.
Barry (ENG)
thanks man - exactly
Cool jig Nick, nice work! 👍👊 #teamspindlesander
Thanks Fred!!! 👊🏻👊🏻
That's a jig I'll be adding to my inventory. It beats doing it freehand by a couple of light years.
Haha sure does - thanks
Great idea!!
thanks!
What was that the big can you sprayed first then the ca
it's activator for the CA glue - amzn.to/2MI3TtZ
Gotta see if I can make this work with my belt sander. Aww yeah, coat rack here we come!
Hell yeah - just a 90° orientation change most likely
I want to achieve the same thing with a dowel but I want the chamfer to be rounded the same diameter as the dowel you are working with
It’s doable - you’d need to make a base for the jig to pivot on while spinning the dowel
Turn the jig around and use it to drill centered holes on your dowels using a drill press..
very true - but I already have one of those
@@NickFerry Now you have two in case you cant find the other.😁
Saved me some time :)
Glad I could help
Pretty cool
thanks
Great now i need to make ANOTHER JIG. They are like clamps you can never have to many LOL.
exactly - I oddly don't have a ton of jigs but I have friends with probably over 100 jigs and templates - now if I had that many clamps I'd be good to go

hahaha - so you know the feeling - make whatever wherever you can find room!
:-) Good job man. You are really on top of postings on your site. Thanks. JimE
thank I try
If ya ever get near Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, TN give me a shout. I'll buy lunch or whatever. JimE
I appreciate that - never been in that area but who knows
Hello nick good👍
thank you!
For what did you need that many handles he asks?
For wood handles
Some of the best products are simple ones. I could have used that when I was beveling, no, chamfering, no, I have it, breaking the corner edge of some dowels a while ago. But alas, I didn't and still don't have a spindle sander, and I hadn't made my spindle sander adapter for my drill press at that time.
I know I've talked about it in the past but I really get a ton of use out of my spindle sander - and others never seem to need one
That felt like the moment from Spaceballs. You can watch the comments before the videos even edited.
funny you mention Spaceballs - I was writing an article the other day and referencing Spaceballs when talking about the rubber spaceballs used for frame and panel doors
Nice
thanks
Great, Nick ... Thanks. Tried the finger treadmill trick, now I've been banned from Festival Foods stores!
haha, too funny Gerry!
It sure don’t look like a bevel but it’s just as good and it’s not complicated.
Nice video 👍👍👍👍
haha - thanks much!
GREAT JIG GOES TO SHOW DONT THROW AWAY SCRAPS. ILL HAVE TO EXERCISE MY FINGERS NEXT TIME AT THE STORE LOL
hahaha - not that I need any more reason to keep scrap
No...YOU rock!!
ha, thanks!
Thumbs up to you
👍🏻👍🏻

Gotta make one. And thanks for the finger treadmill tip. They’re getting kinda lazy. .
Haha thanks
Sweet jig definitely could use this with a project with pinned tennons thanks for the information #spindlesander!!! lol 😂😂😂
No problem - #teamspindlesander
Can you please show us how to turn our router tables into WIFI dust collection as you have? Now, I am going to the grocery store for some finger exercise. Thanks, Nick.
WiFi DC is a trade secret - the molecular re-atomization is closely guarded
Cut one dowel lenghtwise (or sand a flat spot on two dowels to glue), glue the two pieces parallel on a base and you will have a perfekt rail to ride the dowels without v-groove router bit.
Dowels are great for centering
For small diameter dowels 3/8 and under I use a pencil sharpener.
not a bad idea - and I know they make jumbo pencil sharpeners too
Good solution, i like it! You really should worry about your mess :(
What mess??
xD
that is quite easy to do with bare hands too.
And do 50 or 60 of them (120 ends) and get them all the same in less time?
Nick Ferry for bulk orders it's really useful. Sorry if you took it otherwise.
I didn't take it as bad - just explaining where I was coming from in making it - also showed doing it by hand in the video
Nice bevel ... ugh ... chamfer ... ugh ... hollow ... ugh ... video. 😊
Haha thanks
#TeamSpindleSander
999th like! Carry on!
dang - you missed the big prize by only one! you get second prize which is an caps THAK YOU and two thumbs up.....crap I forgot how to add those on desktop - scratch that you will have to settle on the THANK YOU!!
Dang it! So close!
Thanks Nick. LOL
I just do it free hand as needed.
Works fine.
No worries :))
I've found the smaller the bevel the easier that is - I should have shown me dinking around making stakes
Copied your idea. Very happy with result. Thank you
i seen the title and was waiting for a guy playing pan flute and a fellow in leotards dancing wow
Haha - don’t put it past me - that would give me a good reason to get my leotard fixed
why do ya think i wrote it lol
hello Nick, greetings from Italy, I follow you for over a year, I can have your own stickers
thanks - shoot me a message through my website - nickferry.com/contact-me/
