What I really enjoyed about the original compared to the new letter was that Mary really wasn’t ready to die. She told James she wanted to live, and that’s why he felt so guilty for what he did. The only reason why Mary wanted to die was for the pain to end but even then she seemed unsure and scared in the letter. She even hesitates in saying “When I first learned that I was going to…die” which shows she still isn’t accepting of the news but still wants James to live on. I don’t dislike the new one, but it does give a different vibe. In the new one, she sounds tired but actually ready to die. She sounds exhausted of what she’s become. It’s almost like she wants to get over with it to end the pain, and she doesn’t want to be a bother to James anymore which is really sad. I will say I’m so sad they took out the “I can’t tell you to remember me, but I can’t bear for you to forget me.” It was such a powerful line and incredibly heartbreaking.
While I do think the OG is better, I can’t lie that the Remake isn’t really bad but it just gives off a different vibe. Same with the rest of the voice cast. Having them mostly have the original dialogue/script didn’t feel right and I felt like it should’ve been adjusted to suit the difference in tone
I think in the remake, Mary is more peaceful and she has accepted her fate. That's why in the OG she sounds more shaken, sadder, and more scared, but in the remake, she sounds more peaceful and less shaken. That's also why I think they removed the line "I can't tell you to remember me, but I can't bear for you to forget me." There are many lines in the OG letter that show Mary's feeling at the moment was regret and guilt, negative feelings. If James read that, In Water ending would make the perfect sense because he killed someone who actually still hoped for James to come and tell her he loved her for the last time. However, in the remake, she also has accepted if James hated her, and she's fine with it. There was no feeling of regret, and I think the remake version would be more suitable for the Leave ending.
Everyone misses the part "It's just that this may be my last chance... I think you know what I mean... ". James did what Mary wanted him to do, because she couldn't do it by herself
The original still clears honestly, I know it was technically an *unfinished* recording because they didn't edit out the pauses for breath and everything but that makes it feel more real and vulnerable
@@eliwoodnguyen1505 iirc Mary's OG voice actress also did this in one take and could not do it again because she was crying so hard as she finished reading the letter that first time.
@@iwaslikenope1070 oh god..i 've played the game 4 times and i didnt know this fact. Yeah i always have the feeling like the actress would break down soon if the letter were longer😂🤣
the ENTIRE POINT of the letter is that it's raw, emotional, and delivered in a natural way. James, Angela, and Eddy are INTENTIONALLY stilted and unreal. They're not right in the head. The voice director did this all for a reason.
@@Null_Experis Finally, someone gets it. A lot of Maria's lines were delivered in a dream-like surreal way and some weren't; some were raw and grounded. The surreal dialogue wasn't a failed attempt at "good" acting, it was a Lynchian style.
Honestly in my heart, I’ll love the OG to death. With that said, despite the remake’s stumbles, I’m so glad that they truly tried to live up and in some cases improve the OG. The remake felt like it was made with love and respect and honestly, that’s a god damn first for a post team silent Silent Hill game
Monica Taylor Morgan’s (Mary/Maria) work is truly one of the very best and naturalistic sounding performances ever. Every time I hear the letter monologue, I get just as teary as I did hearing it the first time. It blows my mind when people try to seriously discredit the original voices.
Because they are shills who never played the original, they wanted to experience it but can't for the life of them adapt to a different kind of gameplay mechanics so they dismiss it as "outdated" to hide their own incompetence...so they cling on to the remake because it's their first exposure to this story.
@@Miyakoloverplayed both the original and the remake. And yes, I’ll prefer the original letter as well. But besides, the voice actors of the remake have done a tremendous job. Also stop clinging to nostalgia. Nothing wrong with people only playing the remake.
@@stenbuck_ First, I didn't say anything about "playing the remake bad", I am talking about shills that refuse to play the original and pretend the remake is authentic to the original when it isn't, this has nothing to do with nostalgia. And secondly, Maria and Angela's voice acting are worse than the original, especially Maria, so I beg to differ.
@@Miyakolover Yeah, how dare people choose to play the remake that's on modern platforms instead of the original that's on a console that's multiple generations old and an HD collection most people didn't like. Also, I agree the original VA did a better job here, but I feel like all of the VA's in the remake did, at worst, a passable job, and there are instances where I think the new VA's do better than the original ones. But hey, different strokes for different folks, I guess.
I don't think the new one is bad at all, and I think its a pretty good reading of that script. The old was just a lightning-in-the-bottle absolute perfect read of that script that made it iconic - one of the best monologues gaming has given us. Any remake version really didn't stand a chance.
@@Bloodhurl67everyone is entitled to their opinions, but yours straight up sucks. Just because she isn’t on the verge of crying while reading the letter, (like the original Va.) doesn’t mean she didn’t give any emotion. There’s clearly emotion to the words she’s saying. You can hear it in her voice; and that especially goes for the pain. I’d honestly go on a limb and say you have nostalgic glasses on, because all in all I think they both did wonderfully. Old one is raw and, new one is painful.
with the OG one, I always cry, especially when she says James You made me happy. It sounds like a woman who is about to die but is trying to express her feeling. The new on eon the other hand..... >_>
Yeah. Hearing the first letter being read again, I actually teared up toward the end. The second isn’t bad at all, but it definitely sounds like someone reading off a script more than the first one did and less like the actor was feeling what she was saying.
The remake version actually made me sad when I got the leave ending on the 2nd playthrough. But I think it's because the leave ending makes me sad more than the other endings.
To be honest, I prefer the original version because it feels more authentic. The actress recorded it on her first try, and it turned out perfect. So they just left it as it was. Even now, it still touches you deeply.
The way that "you made me happy" is delivered in the original is like the final crack on the dam that holds the waterfall of tears for me. It just feels like pure catharsis for Mary too, to also tell about her regrets, how she hurt James, how she's sorry... she's able to just get it all out. The new one feels ugly, maybe not in a bad way. Her saying "I want you to live" is drastically different mood from "Do what's best for you, James" when you get the In Water ending. Just feels even more miserable.
Omg… Mary’s letter has always had a special place in my heart and I would sometimes just sit at listen when I feel sad. I can’t believe how different the tone of the new one is to the OG… she sounds so angry unlike the OG who actually sounded sad and in pain.
The remake is not that bad it is decent But putting it next to the OG, like damn, the OG feel like a pain, suffering while the remake is like a sad moment
The way the voice fades out at minute 2:41 when she says she couldn't accept that she was going to die sounds so realistic. The remake hasn't been able to replicate that realism, without being bad, it feels like acting, good acting, but acting nonetheless.
That's because Monica Horgan had lost her father before recording the final monologue in the game. So her performance is so real and raw and near impossible to replicate in normal acting. The same goes to Guy Cihi which was in process of divorce and a deep depression at the time.
i agree with the takes that the voice acting is better in the OG and cutting out lines didn't help either, but also i would like to mention it hits more having it scroll the way it did in the OG like you were reading the letter with him
I can see the vision for this new version. There is some really great moments in it, Mary sounds so defeated in the remake letter. However, the original letter hurts so much more. The way she says “you made me happy” genuinely creates a feeling in me every time.
In original it was letter of ordinary woman. It was so sincere. In remake it is letter read by actress. Just a play. It even is good but after original one I just don't believe. Also it does not need background music.
I agree, only thing I could feel with the remake delivery is that it's acted. I'm no pro so I don't really know how to describe it but it feels really formatted. It's what you would expect from a Hollywood movie I would say. I always get teary eyed with the OG, especially the last line. With the remake I was like: ok... Moving on
I feel like the remake version of the letter just comes from a different place. As Mary said, she's not scared of death anymore, and has rather come to terms with it. The line where she says "I just hope the pain will end soon. So you can remember me for who i was, and not what the disease made me." is a different, almost sadder way of saying "I can't tell you to remember me, but i can't bare for you to forget me." This Mary i feel is more hopeless, and almost angrier with her situation, whereas the og Mary is still heartbroken. Remake Mary is tired and exhausted; she just wants her pain to end. I think both are 10/10 respectively. I like to imagine remakes as a different look on the same story, hence why it's called a remake and not a remaster. It's not a 1:1 rebuilding of the game, it's merely taking the source material and making a whole new game out of it centered around the original story line. Some would argue that SH2 didn't need a remake; I've never played the original so i can't say so myself, but what I can say is that the remake has opened so many people, including myself, to the SH franchise, and whether most love or hate the game, it has hit people the same way as the original hit the people that played it decades ago. It's a version that's widely more accessible and it is the SH2 for our generation. Most don't like that or claim that we're just too snobby to get or emulate the og, but how was i supposed to do that when i had no idea what SH was before the remake? what I'm saying is that SH2R has brought so many people to the franchise and that should be appreciated despite your opinion of the game.
The original performance affects me so much more for some reason. I especially love the delivery of “I don’t know if you hate or pity me, or maybe I just disgust you” - it feels so sincere. And why did they remove “…I can’t bear for you to forget me”???
I think most of the people who say the new one doesn’t hit as hard have never lost a loved one to terminal illness…I think both hurt. A lot. Salome had biggggg shoes to fill and I don’t think we could ever get a perfect 1:1 but she still did great with her own spin.
Without the disease destroying their marriage and lives both of them would not have turned into shadows of their former selves. Mary herself understands this and there was no blame in her parting letter to her dear husband.
Unfortunately the genius of the original performance couldn't be replicated, but it's clear it had to be rerecorded in high definition for the remake. It is what it is, the original recording is a one of a lifetime performance
I still prefer the OG Mary's letter reading because the emotion in her voice was genuine (Monica Taylor Morgan confirmed in a few interviews that she on the verge of tears reading it). I do like what Bloober did with the new version of Maria/Mary though, both are great in their own right.
@@lordbeerus462 The letter voice acting falls shorts of the original by a long shot. I was expecting the same audio since the actresses sounds much alike
@@mirkoruhl9324 that's what I was thinking, they should have just added the entire read of the letter from OG, even if it was the OG voice actress. Kinda would have been a perfect way to wrap up the game
I actually like the remakes Mary voice acting for the most part, but when you put her in direct comparison to the original it just doesn’t compare. Mary/Maria had the best voice actor in the original
Why in the hell did they take out the "I can't tell you to remember me, but I can't bear for you to forget me" line?! Ruined the entire scene from that alone, nevermind the acting.
Seems like the remake actor tried to copy the original actors delivery but failed to do it, not as emotional and soul as the OG and the longer pauses of the original added more emotional weight to it, felt like an actual letter.
The remake just doesn't...have the same emotion. The original had a sincere uncertainty, fear, and sadness to it. The remake just sounds like Mary is ready to die- it's not bad but feels too generic. The background music of the remake also takes away and forces an atmosphere of gloom rather than the original's sincerity.
I think both actresses nailed it. While og Mary deliverd a raw emotion and you can tell she just wasn’t ready to die yet, which I think adds layers to James’ guilt and why, at least for me, it is more a despicable and selfish action of his, remake Mary seems like she’s just over this and has accepted her faith and I think the part where she ask James to remember her for what she was instead of what the disease had turned her into, it also brokes my heart the same as the original letter.
I think what will always hinder the remake’s interpretation of this letter was that the original recording was done by Mrs. Morgans initial guttural reaction for the words she had to say for the fist time that was used for the final game. Unfortunately by this small decision made her performance the authentic of the letter read can’t be fully replicated without sounding forced. Gunnarsdolttir’s performance in the remake does the best she can do with the meterial but it CANNOT beat the original however I don’t personally think the remakes voice delivery comes as soulless as others claim it to be.
all we need is a mod to bring up the original voiceover act. they really shouldn't have touched or remake this it was perfect, the OG makes actually me cry. the new one lol
that's why it annoys me when people criticize James so easily. Yes, he did something horrible, but you have to understand the days, the years of suffering that led him to do this. We talk for years, watching his wife waste away. To support her, to love her. But the more time passed, the more irascible she became, the angrier she became - not at him, but at what was happening to her. James was a loving and present husband, which led him to act like this, no one would want to experience that. The worst part is that it can really happen to anyone.
I love the original version, especially the line “you made me happy.” The remake version is good too, but original still the best version. I also noticed that they changed some of the portion of the letter, I prefer more the original in the part that “I can’t tell you to remember me, but I can’t bear for you to forget me….You’ve given so much and I haven’t been able to return a single thing.” It’s so much more emotional than the remake.
I like James and Eddie voice actors in Remake more than original, but Angela and Maria better in original in my opinion. Overall very good remake, i was pleasantly suprized. Silent hill 2 is still after all this years my favorite game with story narrative, second Bioshock Infinite, third will be Last of us 1, dont realy like Last of Us 2, not hate it jast story was much flatter when first.
I think the remake letter reading is fine, as in it did its job. I really don’t think it sounds bad, and it’s probably what the original was expected to sound like. But the original had me SOBBING uncontrollably. I think the remake is perfect in almost every way EXCEPT for the final letter and the scene where Maria yells at James. I’ll be completely honest, I wouldn’t have been mad if they would’ve just put the original audio for the letter reading because its THAT GOOD
After hearing this. The comparison in my opinion, made me feel that the original was full of hope for James to understand her which demonstrates his reciprocal and suicidal tendencies. The remake makes me feel like she's already dead and LOST hope.....which suddenly made me even sadder.....the original made Me support the ending where James and Laura walked out because of her hope. This remake makes me want to drive into a river cause no matter what I can do, will never fix her "already dead" brokenness....makes me prefer the sad ending when James drove off to his death.....
That's the issue though. Why would Mary sound dead in her letter? When she's telling James to live for himself? It was supposedly a letter for James to find hope in life and to live regardless of what happened. I think the contrast between James driving himself on the lake and Mary's hopeful letter makes it even sadder. But sad is not even the proper word for the OG. It's not solely just sad. It's full of other aspects as well combined into one. There's insecurity, regret, guilt, and many more. The remake in that context is rather monotone. But it has done some decent jobs in some areas.
I just finished the remake with the leave ending and the letter being read with weird music and clips of the town just messed up the letter for me. The game play is fantastic but some of the last cutscenes with James and Mary just fell flat. Monica is the greatest Mary voice.
@@ramireini hey, at least they kept the game faithful to the original. But tbh i feel like the remake has more emotion with the cast being improved than it was in the teaser!
@@CloverDreemurr_1 The remake is better overall when it comes to acting but not with Mary, I'm sorry to say. Maria, though? Sure. But Mary is so bad compared to the original.
Holy crap, there is no emotion in that Remake at all,she isn't sad,and regretful for what she put James through How are Voice directors getting worse now?
What made the original great was the fact that the actress was genuinely moved by the letter. Must have been surprising finding this message with such a deep meaning in a field that was yet to be acknowledged as a proper art medium. Not to say the second one was bad, but it pales in comparison because the actress kept it strictly professional, and also probably because we're all used to these types of narratives nowadays.
@@lukerdw The BIGGEST reason why the ps2 voices sound like a real person is,they acted out the scenes over and over and over, new voice acting is just watch the scene, speak
@@AsheCraftingCorner ??? What are you talking about with acting the scenes repeatedly, it's literally the opposite nowadays. Good example is Igon from Elden Ring dlc, the actor said they had him retake lines so many times his throat was in pain. Not even because his takes were bad, just that Miyazaki wanted to hear different versions of the same lines. I feel bad for the dude, but hot damn was his performance phenomenal. I do prefer Mary's original reading of the letter, but the new one isn't devoid of emotion, or badly acted. She's more resigned to her death, which I think is a perfectly reasonable way to approach it.
I absolutely do not understand the direction they went with on that final line in the remake. To me that is the most valuable part of the whole letter. I was hopeful. I didn't want to let out a pained moan but I couldn't help it. That really ruined it for me.
I do character analysis videos on RUclips and I started with resident evil. My research led me to believe that some resident evil fans are off the deep end. That all changed when I did my research on silent Hill and came across silent Hill fans. Oh my God. Some silent Hill fans make those resident evil fans look like philosophers. The amount of disagreement in silent Hill is so ridiculous! People can’t seem to agree on anything. Heck there are some people who think that silent Hill to remake is something out of the terminator timeline where Things keep happening over and over again. There is a very popular belief which claims that this letter is not real. This letter is all in his head. There was never a letter by Mary. There is also a small group of people who believe that James actually did not kill his wife. Silent Hill just made him believe that he did. There is also another belief that the kid called Laura is a ghost. I just did an entire video explaining the stillness ending, and how this notion that James jumped out out of his car at the last moment is one of the stupidest things out there in terms of silent Hill theory. And to anyone who wants to use this redundant and irrelevant defense line that all artist subjective, and all that nonsense, and appropriate response would be, this is why there is very little money in art because going to art school usually makes you think like an idiot. I am sorry to sound mean, but there is a tolerable level of stupidity beyond which you have to defend the honor of your insulted intelligence.
remake did a good job but there was never any chance at defeating the original with its raw and real emotion, rather than simulated sadness from an actress
Hmm cut out the music and retake the last line and I'd say it's pretty dang comparable. You'll never truly beat the original reading because the fact that it was genuine emotional reaction but they did well.
Ive never played the game but have done enough research to say i like the original voice acting better than the remake. Especially Angela's new voice. Typical teen with the gravely voice. The original Angela spoke very well.
This game itself is a harsh reality of what people is like. Leave. Don't be a James in water. Accept the past can be factually worse, not because is bad, because this time is even better. To think the new version isn't as special or impressive as the old one, and not even better, is to be laying yourself. You can like it better because art is art. But technically. The voice acting. The emotion put on it. The new version it's just excellent
People who want to justify the demake's existing always rag on the original's "bad voice acting", but this right here is some of the best VA in the history of video games. It's so charged with emotion. James and Angela sounded 'flat' in the original by design, that's why Maria contrasted them strongly; she was manifested in the town + had real motives, hence why she sounds flat before she is given true purpose (after born form a wish ends). I'm so sad this timeless work of art will now be overshadowed by this crass imitation.
Must have been hard to type that comment with your head so far up your ass. The remake is perfectly good and let's be honest you couldn't play the OG without getting sick of the archaic game design.
Calm down there, drama queen. The remake is great. Just cuz the new performance doesn't match the old doesn't mean you need to cry about "art being destroyed."
I don't know what you saying but i bursted in tears when i heard the you made me happy in the remake and i prefer the new voice acting in general . I finished the original back in my high school days so maybe it impacted me more now 10 years later
idgaf how it comes off the new voice actor for mary/maria is AWFUL shes the one person i'm not able to connect with at all and Maria is my favorite character in any game ever. Not even overly critiquing she just sounds tired and sounds like someone pretending to feel these emotions 6:40 and the next 30 seconds prove my point dude.
I enjoyed parts of the SH2 remake but honestly having the letter read out so mundanely compared to the original actress to then follow it up with that overproduced version of promise was a real kick to the nuts for me.
How are the bets that most of all the youtubers and twitch streamers that will play and praise this game version never played the original or even had enough time to understand the vibes and the atmosphere of the original. And yes. The Original version is far superior than the remake.
I actually think it’s good to have a fresh, objective perspective without any prior bias. The original will always have a special flare that a remake would never be able to capture in its entirety, but it could have its own moments as well that older players might not be able to appreciate since they’re busy picking it apart.
@@damgfulagreed. In the remake, she has some odd pauses at a few points, and feels robotic/monotone in comparison to the og. But my only gripe with the game so far is the voice acting - the sound design and atmosphere is beautifully done
Don't be bitter like that. Yeah, I agree the original reading was better, but you make it sound like the new one will make zero impact on brand new players. And that's just overdramatizing and a painfully human case of "this old thing is better than this new thing and you are stupid if you still like new thing", the "good ol' days" syndrome.
Lol all these arguments in the chat. They are both good. They both have their own merits, and it really just comes down to which style you prefer. I'm partial to the remake myself. I though the actress was going for subtlety vs the original went for raw emotion.
As much as I love the original, Salome's performance as Lyna in FFXIV Shadowbringers sold me as the only person on this planet who could *ever* do it justice....and she did, by miles. She made me cry dozens of times in that game, and she made me cry here, 5 years later.
yeah origianl is more emotional but I like the remake voice actor more, but it's strange how they went in the remake for a Mary that seems not very moved by all this, much more accepting her fate , maybe there's some reason behind this, because I'm pretty sure the voice actress could make it much more similar to original if she wanted
I was getting sad from the original letter, but then i scrolled down the comment and all the npc casual fanboys of the remake trying to make excuses for their disgusting remake got my mood up again :DDDDD
Very interesting to see how nostalgia affects people. I didn’t play the OG SH2 until the end (I did play SH3, SH4, and started SH2 after, but never finished it). To me, the voice acting of everyone in the game sounds like what I expect from the 2000s. Most acting is too amateur-ish in its deliveries, which makes sense given that games were just starting to commonly have voice. So I’m not impressed at all by the original delivery of the letter, and think the remake is just on another level of acting proficiency.
Nah the OG cast was definitely better than say some of those early Resident Evil game’s voice acting. Yes they weren’t perfect but Guy had his moments where he had this cold dead inside delivery that always stuck with me and just the raw emotion from the original version of Mary’s Letter is just heartbreaking to me. I get what the remake was going for Mary in the original game is someone who hasn’t accepted moving on while Mary in the remake has just accepted it. Both are good but just that emotional gut punch is why people still remember it and think it’s better. If it doesn’t work for you that’s one thing but for me it absolutely works. The remake is “technically” better but it’s lacking any kind of real emotion it just feels more like a performance to me.
@ it’s one level above Resident Evil just because that bar is too low. It’s just like FF10, also miles ahead of PS1 games, but it’s still a bit lacking compared to modern stuff. Nostalgia plays no factor for me when it comes to SH2. And let me tell you the original performance does absolutely nothing for me. It just sounds like an amateur person reading a letter, that’s it. E.g., the part “I feel so pathetic and ugly laying here, waiting for you…” goes beyond making me feel nothing. It makes me feel *cringe*.
u know what is a bit annoying? That maria and mary are really too similar xd honestly i kinda like how clean new one is but older one is good too. I think they also had much bigger budget since they created games for over decade or smth
I think the new one isn't worse. It's just different. The content of the letter is different than the OG, and the approach overall is really different. The OG sounds more regretful, sadder, and more afraid because the content is full of that. She isn't ready to die. This will suit the In Water ending, because it's clear she actually doesn't want to die when James kills her. In the remake, she is ready to die, that's why she sounds more peaceful. The content of the letter reflects that, they remove all the lines in the OG that sound regretful or scared. That's why the last line also sounds more relieved than sad. This will be suitable for the Leave ending, because after feeling guilty about killing her, it's like Mary said that at the moment he killed her, she was ready to die, so it's fine, she forgave him. Then he can forgive himself.
The word for me is "convenient". This is pretty much convenient story-wise, but still the actual aspect of "leaving it all behind" or "living with this despite" are too very different things. OG ending was bitter-sweet and nuanced in that matter. The new one makes it pretty one-dimensional for me. it's just about James, Mary's tragedy doesn't really matters - it's almost like he did her a favor and both of them were almost ready to let go. Except the beauty of the OG is to leave and try to live with this burden - the very high-ups and the lowest downs, moments of love and betrayal, accept them for what they were, really. Emotional resonance of the OG letter clearly indicated these emotions, newer version - not really
@@johntheco I think it'll be up to your preference at the end of the day. I'm just appreciating both meanings, and for me, both are conveying beautiful messages. It wasn't one dimensional or ignoring Mary's tragedy. Mary's tragedy has already been conveyed through her monologue in the corridor before the fight. The last letter is just a different interpretation of how Mary would feel when she wrote her last words to her loved one. The OG is Mary who succumbed to her tragedy. The remake is Mary who thought about James' happiness more than her own tragedy. You don't feel the same emotion as the OG, because the intention behind the letter is different. I wonder if we would've thought differently if the OG didn't exist or the OG version came later.
I got a question for the people saying "the remake did a good job but the original was better" .... how exactly did the original do a good job if it took a superior dub and made it inferior? wtf? do you actually think about what you write before you hit post?
New girl nailed the feel of the original. She bombed the, "You made me happy" part though. The cracking in her voice is what brought on the water works for me.

As much as I like the remake, the OG still can't be dethroned. At least, Silent Hill is no longer a dead franchise.
Is definitely some parts in the original that the Remake can't beat. I actually like the remake letter but the original it's just undefeated
Monica Taylor Morgan’s (Mary/Maria) work is truly one of the very best and naturalistic sounding performances ever.
Every time I hear the letter monologue, I get just as teary as I did hearing it the first time.
It blows my mind when people try to seriously discredit the original voices.
npcs are just gonna npc
But hey, different strokes for different folks, I guess.
the best part of the letter that i can't tell you to remember me, but I can't bear for you to forget me and they delete this omfg
The original narrative is just more raw like she is scared to face her fate which is makes it more emotionally dynamic and realistic.
The original letter reading is lightning in a bottle, it’s something that was recorded in the right time at the right place and can’t be replicated
I don't think the new one is bad at all, and I think its a pretty good reading of that script. The old was just a lightning-in-the-bottle absolute perfect read of that script that made it iconic - one of the best monologues gaming has given us. Any remake version really didn't stand a chance.
It's really not that good, she just fails to give any emotion in her voice.
@@Bloodhurl67 as someone who defended the remake since it was announced, the new reading of the letter is soooooooooooo bad. 0 emotion
I’d honestly go on a limb and say you have nostalgic glasses on, because all in all I think they both did wonderfully. with the OG one, I always cry, especially when she says James You made me happy. It sounds like a woman who is about to die but is trying to express her feeling. The new on eon the other hand..... >_>
You made me happy. Meh gotta go bye lol
The original version makes me feel very sad, the current version didn't even tickle me.
Yeah. Hearing the first letter being read again, I actually teared up toward the end. The second isn’t bad at all, but it definitely sounds like someone reading off a script more than the first one did and less like the actor was feeling what she was saying.
remake version tickle me a little
The remake version actually made me sad when I got the leave ending on the 2nd playthrough.
The original “you made me happy” hits way way way different.
The remake is not that bad it is decent
But putting it next to the OG, like damn, the OG feel like a pain, suffering while the remake is like a sad moment
Nope at all, remake version has many layers..❤
i agree with the takes that the voice acting is better in the OG and cutting out lines didn't help either, but also i would like to mention it hits more having it scroll the way it did in the OG like you were reading the letter with him
I can see the vision for this new version.
Moving on
totally agree
They shouldn't have messed with this part. It's one of the most moving moments in video game history. Don't fuck with perfection

One can't help but curse fate when we listen to Mary's letter. Both she and James deserve a better life together.
james deserved no such thing - he is a murderer out of selfish reasons and cheated on his wife while she was dying
Without the disease destroying their marriage and lives both of them would not have turned into shadows of their former selves. Mary herself understands this and there was no blame in her parting letter to her dear husband.
Thank you for posting this, im not even kidding when they announced the remake the first thing i thought is i hope they just leave this part alone
"When I first learned that I was going to die"
they probably didn't, often voice actors don't read the script exactly
Unfortunately the genius of the original performance couldn't be replicated, but it's clear it had to be rerecorded in high definition for the remake. It is what it is, the original recording is a one of a lifetime performance
I still prefer the OG Mary's letter reading because the emotion in her voice was genuine (Monica Taylor Morgan confirmed in a few interviews that she on the verge of tears reading it). I do like what Bloober did with the new version of Maria/Mary though, both are great in their own right.
the background in the original where the letter flying with the light was an amazing idea
I stay with the original one... I feel it more expontaneous and emotional... 😢
The remake version isn't *bad*, but the original is still so much better. Much more raw.
I love the remake but the original letter reading is so much more intense and touching, just for the « James you made me happy », pure perfection
I really don't understand the hate for the remake one, like yeah I get the original is special and unique, but both are perfect in their own way
I like the beggining more in the remake, but the ending part in OG (always makes me sob).
Exactly my thoughts. They both great, but the OG leave you with gut punch when remake is more hopeful with Mary sounding like she accepted her fate.
Really feels like they dropped the ball on the remakes mary
I think her scene with James as she is dying on the bed is great in the remake, but the letter is no where near

Yea, actually the original actor broke down while recording the letter which makes it feel 100% more real

Gunnarsdolttir’s performance in the remake does the best she can do with the meterial but it CANNOT beat the original however I don’t personally think the remakes voice delivery comes as soulless as others claim it to be.
i feel like they put music over the remake to try to make up for the lackluster voice acting. the original didn't need music
all we need is a mod to bring up the original voiceover act. they really shouldn't have touched or remake this it was perfect, the OG makes actually me cry. the new one lol
that's why it annoys me when people criticize James so easily.
I love the original version, especially the line “you made me happy.”
The remake version is good too, but original still the best version.
I also noticed that they changed some of the portion of the letter, I prefer more the original in the part that “I can’t tell you to remember me, but I can’t bear for you to forget me….You’ve given so much and I haven’t been able to return a single thing.” It’s so much more emotional than the remake.

The original always made me tear up
The new version has me cringing
The new version it's just excellent
unfortunately no pathos on " you made me happy"...
Everyone here knows what the superior version is
Yes, it's remake ❤
Wtf. Why have they chosen to stick so closely to the vocal grain of the original version, while taking away all its intensity? It just sucks
Literally the opposite from what I’ve seen. Everyone who loves the original voice actress talks shit about the new one.

I prefer the remake and its not even close honestly.

NOOOOO! The Trophy!!
Mary's acting almost sounds smug in the remake, nowhere near the sadness of the original.
The remake is so much better in some areas, but not in this particular voice line delivery. The original is my favorite game of all time btw.
@@damgfulagreed. In the remake, she has some odd pauses at a few points, and feels robotic/monotone in comparison to the og. But my only gripe with the game so far is the voice acting - the sound design and atmosphere is beautifully done
Don't be bitter like that. Yeah, I agree the original reading was better, but you make it sound like the new one will make zero impact on brand new players. yeah origianl is more emotional but I like the remake voice actor more, but it's strange how they went in the remake for a Mary that seems not very moved by all this, much more accepting her fate , maybe there's some reason behind this, because I'm pretty sure the voice actress could make it much more similar to original if she wanted

That maria and mary are really too similar xd
honestly i kinda like how clean new one is but older one is good too. I think they also had much bigger budget since they created games for over decade or smth
Big disappointment tbh
Yeah the OG writing was better, as well as the delivery. Too flat.
New girl nailed the feel of the original. She bombed the, "You made me happy" part though. The cracking in her voice is what brought on the water works for me.
I like the new one
