    I'm a customer of SCG and Auber. I hope my level of "dual citizenship" entitles me to comment regarding the symbols that show up on the Auber display during programming. Instead of su, that's sv for Set Value. The symbols for Pre-infusion, dwell (Auber term for wait after Pre-infusion and brew)), and brew times are: tP, td and tb. The Rancilio brew switch needs to be OFF when pumping water through the steam/hot water wand, so if you leave the brew switch on all the time, water will flow from the brewhead when trying to pump hot water only through the wand. I love the Auber PID, Rancilio Silvia and SCG -- great combo of products and service.

    I have had my machine with PID for about 2 years now and love it. (sidetone) I purchased the bottomless portafilter which was a huge improvement for pulling shots.
    Recently, my machine started to act up with temperature control. I took it to the local authorized service location, but due to the installation of the PID, he could not work on it. I don't want to lose my PID as I know this is a huge benefit of the machine. Does the install of the PID void the warranty?

    What temp for steaming milk? 290 was the default setting. after i push the extra water out before steaming the milk, it goes down to 270s . . . .should i wait for it to hit 290 again?

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  10 лет назад

      No, you can begin steaming right away as soon as you flush that small amount of water from the steam arm and do not need to wait to get the temp to 290. Most folks steam anywhere from 270 to 300 degrees. - Teri

    Dang how many videos have you guys produced? This is very interesting stuff. Is it hard to installed a PID on a Rancilio? I just got one. It seems you guys were shooting videos back and forth around the mid 2000's. Do you have newer ones?

    Hey SCG I love and really appreciate all your videos. I'm planning on getting the rancilio Silvia with the PID from you guys in the future. Just two quick questions about it. Does the PID play into steaming milk at all with special functions or do you simply turn on the steam switch and watch the PID to hit the right temperature to start steaming? Also, just out of curiosity, what are the functions on the PID that Gail said not to mess with?

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  9 лет назад +1

      Hello Jeremy White, The PID does show the temperature climb when you press on the steam button, so you don’t need to worry about pressing any buttons on the PID too in order to get it to go to steam temperature. Also, just of note, you will still need to refill the boiler after you steam, whether you have the PID or not, so that you don’t burn out the boiler. As far as the other functions, this PID has the ability to be used for other things besides controlling temperature for a coffee machine, so if you should get into other functions, if, say you didn’t go to the right programming, you could change something that we would not be able to figure out or talk you through correcting. If you are getting into the programming of the timing of the brew cycle, just be sure that you are only adjusting the settings in “0001,” as we do not have any other guidelines for any other settings that the PID might have control over. Hope this helps! - Miranda

    Hi SCG, with the pre infusion function on the PID, how does it stop the solenoid valve from activating when it pauses the extraction? Is it any different from just turning the brew switch on, off, then back on again?
    Cheers
    Jake

    • @SeattleCoffeeGear
      @SeattleCoffeeGear  9 лет назад +1

      Hi Jacob Madden It's exactly the same as turning the brew button on, then off, then on again. The Silvia doesn't truly have a way to lighten the pressure, the pump is either on, or it's off. With other machines, like Rockets, the pre-infusion is just the release of some of the already existing pressure from the hot water, so it's not actually engaging the pump. :)

    Don't Work on Mine! I went crazy trying to set the tp (pre-infusion) time on my Auber PID (self-installed on Silvia). Guess what - not a programmable option on mine (KIT-RSRTDn ). To set tp you need the KIT-RSPb kit with pre-infusion options. Why didn't somebody tell me that!

    hi, i am thinking of getting the PID for my Silvia mainly for the temperature stability. i'm not interested in the pre-infusion and the timing features for the pull and i want to be able to keep using the Silvia's brew button instead of pressing the PID's button for brewing. is it possible to set up the Auber PID this way? thanks!

      I don't have any feedback on it yet; I only have had the opportunity to play with the prototype last April. We haven't had a production demo so can't speak to its final functionality, however, it is a home-class machine and the model that I tested doesn't have anywhere near the steaming power of a commercial machine -- the boilers are just too small. It worked great, though! :) - Kat

    After installing my Auber Pre-infusion PID (bought at SCW) it operated fine for two weeks, then when turned on today, it goes straight to steam temp, not stopping at brew temp. Checked all wiring to the drawiings and all look good. Ideas to resolve this? I've not programmed the PID, unless pressed something accidentally. Thanks.

    I have a question. Well a statement/question.
    The PID as much as i can see addresses the extraction time and boiler temp. Extraction and preinfusion,i can do manually. The boiler temp control seems to be the main benefit....the actual reason i am interested in the PID for the silvia is actually fine tuning the boiler pressure for frothing milk...i find this to be the weakest point of this machine. There is either over pressure or under pressure, not to mention sloppy boiler element kick in times during frothing....
    I imagine an actual pressure gauge connected,read and regulated by the pid would be the solution if it doesnt already exist!!!

    • @vicwahbyphotography4866
      @vicwahbyphotography4866 4 года назад

      The amount of time (and therefore the amount of milk) you can steam with the Silvia is limited. Therefore, I begin steaming as soon as the (not) ready light goes out. When it comes back on, the steam isn't hot enough., but within the ready state it works. Throttle the pressure with the steam knob at first when the pressure is highest.

    At 1:00 you show how you can scroll over and input “1”, but you don’t explain why. Is the 1 simply to enter programming mode? Please remember to explain your steps in addition to just doing them. btw, letting that machine heat up with no water in it, goodbye heating elements.

    Don't add a PID to your espresso machine. I've owned the same Rancilio Silvia for the past 15 + years. I just had the 3rd Auber PID controller go sideways. The problem is that adding a PID complicates the wiring, you are adding another temperature sensor + a solid state relay. You now have more things that can/will go wrong. I have had one of more of these components go out over the years. I just removed all of it and put my machine back to a stock configuration. Now I'm enjoying wonderful espresso without all the hassle and fiddling needed just to attempt to have a bit more control over the temperature. In the end, you will not notice the taste difference at all. As a matter of fact, when I removed the entire Auber PID system I would say my shots are the best they have ever been.
    Just run the machine without the portafilter under the head for a few seconds before your shot. This will bring the temperature up and clean out the brew head. Voila!
    Save your money!
