While sheltering-in-place, Adam is livestreaming every week to work on builds and take questions from the Tested community! This week, Adam shows off some of his sorting strategies for assembling model kits, shares some of his favorite maker channels, updates us on his hand injury, and talks about how he balances working on projects and his home life. (This was recorded from a livestream on 4/14/20.)
    Questions answered in this video:
What are your favorite RUclipsrs to watch in your free time?
How is filming Tested different from filming MythBusters?
How do you get projects done and still have family time?
How good of a cook are you?
What’s going on with Savage Industries bags?
What is your first order of retrievability in the kitchen?
What does your daily schedule like right now?
What sort of food is bringing you comfort during lock down?

Adam I just wanted to thank you.
You give so much of your time and expertise to the maker community. I spent so much time watching you on Mythbusters growing up and being able to see you on this platform is just great.
I listened to your narration of your book a couple months ago. One passage really stuck with me. You discuss how your parents gave you the freedom to explore and be creative.
My son is almost 2 now and I apply what you said every single day in his life already. We do little arts and crafts projects with him now, that eventually will progress into building things and real problem solving.
Your show, your book and your RUclips content are absolutely inspiring. Thank you for all of it.

Adam: Glue a small thin neodymium magnet on the bottom on the outside of each of those screw containers, it will both hold the screws in place and allow you to stick the container to a metal sheet or ... well anywhere magnetic... like the fridge.

    • @msn3wolf
      @msn3wolf 4 года назад +2

That's a nice idea and I like it for bigger screws but that size is so small that you cannot pinch the screws, so a magnet could make it quite hard to fish the screw of the container. I would test before buying a bunch of magnets for them.

    • @eideticex
      @eideticex 4 года назад +1

What I use on my tool pouch would probably be good for screw containers as well. I tie a little wire to a disk magnet that I drop in and out of the pouch, the other end tied to a ring hook I clip onto the pouch or the work piece. You can make it look professional and be strong by using 16 gauge wire and (red) butt splices. There is just enough room to feed the wire through, loop it around something and then push back in to crimp it snug onto the magnet or retainer side. Stands up to getting snagged on ladders just fine so plenty strong for even a rough environment.

I built a shop for my metal and wood work about 10 mins from home (moved from my basement and garage). I find I go less often than slipping out to the garage, but I spend more time focused in the shop than in the garage. So, thanks for your comments on that subject.

@Adam et. al., if you haven't considered it, weekly or monthly medicine holders are excellent for organizing, or temporarily storing project-based screws. May not be quite as cheap, configurable, or see-through as your custom solution, but it's a very handy trick I picked up working on computers in IT over the years. Probably more effective when you only have a smaller variety of screws. Perhaps easier for quick jobs, so you don't have to have a whole bunch of tiny containers. Also the snap lids are probably easier to open and close quickly than a bunch of screw caps. I keep several "M-F" medicine holders in my drawer and use them all the time.

For earbuds, I really like the quality of the RHA CL2. They're a bit pricey, but the quality is great. They also have the option to take the buds off and hook them up to different things. So one way to use them is on a cable to a 3.5mm jack, and the other is to put them on the wireless unit, which is a wrap around the neck type thing. Conveniently, that won't get knocked into a sewer. You can also take them out and let them dangle for a moment.

      Or bead containers.
You can get them online or in craft stores and they're usually pretty tight, so even ridiculously tint pieces don't fall into another compartment.
Just look for a softer plastic one. Acrylic or other very hard plastics shatter almost as easily as glass and the plastic reacts with all kind of chemicals and just dissolve.
I used to work with polymer clay a lot and that stuff eats through that type of hard plastic like acid.
And something like acetone also damages it easily.
But anyways. Bead containers. Made to store really tiny things.

Adam, you were supposed to speak at Rowan University’s commencement in May. Please consider speaking next year for us seniors of ‘21. We engineers would love to get a send off from someone we grew up watching and sparking our love for what we do.

Suggestion: Tighten the lids on the screw containers and then draw horizontal (or vertical) lines on them so that you can visually see when they are all closed.

I've made a vertical garden from all the stuff I would of normally recycled, and a bicycle trailer so I can go get manure and cardboard for more no dig boarders. I have 5 adults togrow food for in a garden about 30 x 30 ft. Mother of invention and all that. Stay safe Adam, from here in the UK.

Adam needs to watch Wintergatan and the amazing art and engineering project that is MMX. It is truly one of the most amazingly enjoyable projects to watch unfold in "real time" on RUclips, and when it is finished it should be seen as one of the greatest examples of what is made possible in large because of the artistic and dedicated maker community on RUclips. I can't even come close to express how great that whole project is.

You like small component storage - you should try WEN TAI boxes - spring loaded lids and come in variety of sizes that can be clipped together - I love them for small component / screw etc

i can see why having a shop away from your house gives you more time with family , its cause when your at the away shop you tell your self "its quitting time" an head home , but when the shop is in your house you can go there any time you want with no way of telling your self its quitting time

Great videos as always. I was wondering if while in isolation and knowing your love of Sci fi, would you be able to show us how to make a star trek uniform as seen in voyager and the next generation, especially the com badges please. Would love to be able to follow as I would love to make one to fit correctly and have actual prop sized badges and accessories.
    Thanks.
Hope you and your team are safe and well during this crisis

Adam, for your Ecto model build, if you don't want to lose screws, get a magnetic dish. I use magnetic dishes all the time when I'm doing repair work and assembly so I don't lose screws.

Adam, check out storage boxes for SMD electronic components. They are super convenient for small parts, come in several sizes and colors, and they lock together. I've used them for everything from resistors to o-rings. One brand is Wen Tai Snap Boxes. Stay safe...and organized :)

The current project I'm working on in my shop is rebuilding a Cummins N14 engine that's for one of my semis. I completely rebuilt a Caterpillar 3406E in my Kenworth w900l this past January. So kinda like model building but with much bigger parts and more $$$. :)

There's something I instituted doing electronics builds, guitar pedals and small amps, that I've tried to do forever since - that is as I have the plan and start building up the BOM having a storage solution for the board and components, etc. with the plan so it's like a lego box of parts and instructions that will eventually end up with the BOM all ticket off and is ready to kit build basically. I also has this approach back then that the storage for pedals in particular was old throw away backup tape plastic containers which i'd then drill holes in and mount everything to do the testing and troubleshooting. then finally I could see all of it almost in situ and start building the aluminium casing and routing all that off board componentry. Let the storage also be part of the process taken up a notch.

Suggestion, add some padding to those box interior(s) so that parts don’t get scratched (particularly the Crome and transparent ones).
B-T-W tattoo ink cups (in various sizes/capacities are useful for maintaining specialized mixed paint colors, are are potentially useful for small parts as well.

Hey Adam hot glue rare earth magnets into the lids of those plastic cans. that keeps the screws in place and if the cap comes off the screws do not spill. I've been using that trick for years now. if you glue magnets to the bottom the screws are harder to get out...

Thanks for wearing a mask while bicycling! Bicyclists around here (Santa Monica National Recreation Area) mostly don't use them, unfortunately.
The Embarcadero is my favorite walking route (particularly very early inn the post-dawn morning), from Oracle Park to Levi's Park. I get to stay in my daughter's Brannan St. apartment while visiting her; won't be doing that for a while, unfortunately.
