- Shortly after receiving his new all-aluminum bowcaster replica, Adam disassembles the entire prop to its constituent machined parts to begin the process of wrapping his head around its construction and the ways in which he can modify it. Here's a glimpse into the part of Adam's build projects that's more about exploration and discovery of ideas before the build becomes fully formed in his head.

Adam your mod was fantastic and thank you for the love and respect for the Bowcaster prop project I did. I’ll have one of the assembled Bowcasters weighted at the machine shop so we can see how much "guts" were taken out. Stay tuned.
Please share that! It would be great to know just how many hogs were released. 😂
awesome!
that's cool...
Great I was really hoping Adam would of weighed it before he started.
@@kurtdowney1489 would have
Adam, when I was in the aircraft industry, I often worked on prototype parts and very often did what you are doing here - it was known as “adding lightness” 😊
Reminds me of a riddle: What can you add to a barrel to make it lighter that can be seen with the naked eye? A hole.
I would refer to it as "Increasing Levity." It sounds better and it rolls more trippingly off the tongue.
But that is neither here nor there.
Another term for them is Lightning Holes, which are the holes in the airplane you get when it simply weighs too much and you fly into a Level Five Thunderstorm. I did that once, and frankly I don't recommend it.
That's Colin Chapman of Lotus fame:
"Simplify, then add lightness"
@@cpt_nordbart yup, king of the engineers. If the car did not fall apart as it crossed the line then it was too strong and therefore too heavy. Add lightness was one of the mantras of the chief designer at our site.
the correct term used in regards with guns, is "lightning cuts" ⚡⚡
As one might expect, it's amusing to see Adam continue to slowly convert the new "hardware store" space of the cave into an actual, additional, and (at least for now) primary work-space.
I just wish we had before and after weights.
I was thinking the same throughout the video. Maybe he can ask Manny to weight another one he built so we have before and after.
Mani commented on her and said he would weigh one
@@toddler_dragons Look in the comments - he already said he'd weigh one!
It’s about 3.5 bananas lighter.
Did you weigh it before and after?
Thank you for making content for so long. Mythbusters got me through many rough times growing up, and to be an adult and still watching is great. Thank you Adam!
Amazing format to do content that feels way more intimate, same as your lightsaber video. Love when you slowly work on a personal project and just slowly collect some video and commentary of your process over time then distill the clips into one project video for youtube. Always learn something in this type of content.
I can’t believe you didn’t do a before and after with the weight. Love the channel. I like to watch late night. You have such a calming voice
You can feel the admiration and excitement Adam has for it every time he holds it and gives it a little heft. A gorgeous thing…
Still haven't gotten a kitchen scale for the cave? You could have actually weighed it before and after...
18:18 : I think that when you start doing accents, and other kinds of shtick, it’s just a way to keep your mind from getting stuck on a problem. It helps keep you mentally relaxed. It’s a habit I picked up from my dad. He is a maker too. It shows you’re having fun, so keep it up!
Please do the black anodized finish and weather it back. That will be so incredibly cool looking!
An easier alternative to anodizing is powder coating. Still very durable and easy to do in a small shop. Adam has all of the needed elements already, I suspect.
I love the level of craftsmanship. Adam has such a cool job.
I hope you have a place where all those metal shavings can be recycled. Aluminum is actually worth a little bit of money if you have enough of it. LOL Anyways, that bow-caster looks amazing! Mani made a work of art! BTW, your off-the-cuff suggestion of anodizing it black & weathering it back from that sounds great! I bet it would look astounding done that way!
Love it! Can't wait to see the WEATHERING!
The editor is in full swing in this episode. :)))
I want to see the travel box Adam will likely make for it.
Ha! You know him well.
@@tested I figure the amount of work he's think of putting into it means he'll likely cosplay with it which means he needs a box.
Let's be honest here. Nobody thought this would survive without the Adam special touch. :D
Nay, we EXPECTED this episode.

Awesome! and I loved seeing your excellent trigger discipline too!
Adam: "Maybe a pound and a half, but I feel it!"
You'll feel it a lot more after lugging it around for a day in a fur costume, for sure.
Cosplay-replica and DIsplay-replica are related but subtly different things with different needs, for sure.
I prefer the idea of "functional replica" that Adam also seems enamored with. "It's as screen matched as possible, but made as if it were an actual functional thing and not a hunk of rubber painted chrome."
this is why...if you are in Adam's circle and you are a maker...you should get him involved...it is content for his channel...so don't think you are being a bother...and as such...he seems to be always willing. Also...it is great fun for us viewers...
Only getting you in the right earpiece of my headphones. Not gonna dislike this one, but gonna skip it and give it no up or down. Love ya, Adam. Checked a Reed Timmer video to confirm audio issues. 5:13 is when I bailed. Hope there was stereo audio and we can get this fixed.
"This is my Bowcaster; this is my gun...."🤣
could we just talk about this man's trigger discipline even on a fully prop fire arm?
Awesome! Love watching this!
Make it look like an ANDOR prop!! That would be a lot of fun.
The thing i like the most is that it breaks down almost like an actual "rifle", especially the scope and trigger mechanism. You guys weight it before/after by any chance, just to see how much weight Mr. Savage has saved on it. It seems like a lot of hogging out actually helped on it to make it relatively lighter. Cant wait to see the rest of the build upgrades for the lights, base work and painting.
I really wish Adam would have weighed it before and after. I'm just curious how much weight he was actually able to remove from it.
Adam is a legendary tinkerer
Adam. I am a tool and die maker. Love your work. Machining tip for your use help galding to tool. Use vegetable oil in mist spray bottle. Won’t make huge mess and works great.
Great video sir 👍 😊
"I don't know why I'm talking like that." Have you been watching The Bad Batch?
Are you planning on making your heavy workbench moveable with those leveling casters? How many people will it take to tip it over and back again?
Sounds like you are saying he sent you an 80% completed Bowcaster, and with a little milling work, you were able to complete it into a more functional version.
Good thing ATF doesnt do blasters yet!
Did you do a weight comparison before and after?
OOH anodized black aluminum would be awesome.
very nice my dude
Great job with the bow caster! Tbh I'm kind of surprised you didn't try hogging out the bottom of the grip. I expect that would shave some weight from it as well.
Who thought of phantasm the moment you saw the end spheres?!
There is nothing to fear but Sphere itself.
Phantasm were all great. Wish they would remake them now with all the new technology we have.
I agree! They were great and they should remake them. But who would play the tall man?
For the tall man perhaps actor Carel Struycken 7' 2". But at 75 years old I don't know if he would work. Plus I don't know what he sounds like.
You could hollow out the pistol grip and put a trap door for a battery compartment.
Very cool, you didnt weigh the before and after? :) Cant wait to see the lighting and other paint/etc that you do for it.
This edit it genius! Intro “tested” logo and pig noises alike!!!
8:35 low key own book title-drop, Adam?
This was extremely entertaining !! Thank you !
There were a couple things I noticed.
First of all .. your primary goal was weight reduction. From looking at the Bowcaster, I agreed with you.
But would have been good to have had a "Before" total weight and an "After" for comparison.
Also a comment about the "Heft" and "Feel" would be good, both Before and After.
The original workpiece I have to agree was Beautifully Done and what I liked about what you did was that you totally respected that original. It definitely deserves a great deal of respect !
Now take it out on the range and show us what you can do at a hundred yards or so !!
I want to see how well it _works_, not just how good it _looks_.
Because it looks .. well .. fantastic.

cool mod Adam
Ahh, modifying the Bowcaster from Wookie standard weight to human standard weight.
I can’t wait for the electronics
Did you misplace your mallet? Using the scope mount to tap out the trigger mount pin works just as well I suppose.
I thought you were going to remake a paper crossbow like you did on the show out of newspapers and a plastic plate. That would make a great video to post
Norm is having a party next door 😂
You need to add a Chewie scream to it, remember to add foam balls in a resonating chamber.
Would have been interesting to see a before and after weight.
an idea - set up 24 hour cameras that record to your own sever ( then you can control access to the footage ) and when thing happen you can at least get the 24 hour security footage I can be the only one who would get a LUL from watching a wild Adam in his natural environment but access to the footage would be fundamental to safety love your work and you inspire me to make.
Respectfully… this is what should have been done from the get-go… :-) Nice work Adam. Adding lightness is always a good idea ^^
Edit: YES anodize it!!!
Still watching and wondering if Adam had done a before and after weigh-in...
Chewie got some massive balls.
They really should have been Brass rather than Aluminum.
The aesthetics might have suffered however, but the message would be clear enough.
You can buy them online but you aren't guaranteed to have them by Nature.
Hey Adam, I was wondering have you ever in your modifications ever for lack of better words "screwed up" and how were you able to fix it? Speaking from experiences on my part sometimes cool fixes happen.
I use XCelite 99 ball head hex bits for daily drivers in my work toolbag and have a set of ball head Bondhus Torx drivers since my world is rarely perfectly straight 😁
What about slotting through the groove for the bow string
Beautifully constructed piece made even perfect-er!
Adam did you weight it before you started?
Did you weigh it before you started so you could do a before & after comparison to see how much material you removed?
I'm curious about the feel-difference between removing mass from aluminum like this or adding mass in strategic places in a plastic prop.
Did you happen to get a weight before you added more lightness?
One suggestion: Don't just "paint" a magnificent piece like that.
Anodize it . Caswell Plating of Lyon ,Ny has DIY supplies and everything you need.
They're a great resource for Builders.
Better yet .. anodize connecting pieces in contrasting colors.
The scopes and scope mounts they go in, come to mind.
But you're spot on. That piece is way too magnificent to put paint on it.
What are the 4 White/Black/Red things on the front left top edge of the work bench?
Now you need to make a storm trooper E 11 or DLT 19 I think that would be pretty cool
Love the video, hate the echo!
"I don't know why I'm talking like this..?" Is literally me, when I'm getting really into my creative process and it's going good..
I know others before me have mentioned this...But someone should make a video-mix out of all Adam's finger drumming 😅
"I don't know why I'm talking like that..."
because you're Adam Savage, half man half comic book superhero. 😂
Love that Fantastic Thumbnail 😘
How much weight was removed? Did you weigh before and after?
Whoa whoa. We now need manie to wiegh his bow. So Adam u can tell us EXACTLY, how much aluminum u were able to remove.
Alternate title: Adam Savage voids another warranty 😉 Regarding the weight, riffing on what Han told Chewie, "I think Manny had Wookies in mind when he designed this thing." I'm guessing Wookies wouldn't mind the weight, especially with the recoil the bowcaster is supposed to have. Regardless, it must be nice to have the skills to confidently mod such a beautiful prop!
Adam should post bounties on the RPF for props he wants made in exchange for a visit to the cave lol
I could've sworn the bowcaster did not have a string and I was right...sort of. In ANH, it does not but in the other two (and the SW:HS) it does. Shows which movie I've watched the most.
Wish you showed us the before weight and the after lightening weight

Adam... Savage's... place
Hey Momma D.
Video idea: What were some fears your boys had or you’ve had as a parent? How have they/you overcome them?
Did you weigh it before and after?
Adam do you think you coule build a T60 Power Armor from the new Fallout Amazon Series? Would be absolut slick!
Hey Adam did you remember to weigh it first to see how much weight you've saved with all the work you've done
NICE
And you know that the 1977 prop guys just grabbed some stuff from Bapty's and jammed it together with glue and tape as fast as possible.
Needs must.
Any idea what the weight difference is?
Adam making lite of a bowcaster.
I study Adams video's unapologetically
em i the only one who got distracted by the casters at the start on the left, I want some they look so durable.
In canon those spots would be hollowed out anyways, to put the mechanisms in.
What is the before and after weight
My question also.
I'd prefer it a bit too heavy, personally. I would want to feel like 'this is a Wookie's weapon' when I picked it up.
It would have been interesting if you had weighed it before and after so you knew the exact weight you cut out.
Well Manny probably recommended always carrying it with Both-Hands
Just out of curiosity does anyone know if someone made a bowcaster that fired bolts?
btw...when are we going to finally see you mod the Aliens gun from Hasbro...I bought one so I could follow along...and it has been ages so it seems
initial excitement, the 'beautifully made' turns into changing every single part of it.
