  • New Zealand is a young nation and has only had 200 years since the first cows arrived to make cheese. This video is all about how the first cows, sheep, and goats arrived in NZ and what we know about the early history of cheese making, up until the mid-1800s.

Thanks for watching. This was a fun video to make. It got me wondering about whether cheese from NZ has made it into the rest of the world. So, if you aren't from New Zealand, have you ever come across cheese from New Zealand?

Does Gavin's cheese count as cheese from NZ? I've never actually tried any of his cheese though

😁 Gavin is Australian. There is something of a friendly rivalry between the two countries, so it doesn't count I'm afraid.

I see lots of New Zealand butter where I live in the midwestern US, but not cheese that I can recall!

    Great video as always.
New Zealand butter used to be a big thing in the UK when I was growing up but not cheese as far as I recall.

Will you be talking about Juliet Harbutt? I'm sure she comes from New Zealand, I have met her a couple of times here in the UK, she did amazing work in the UK building our cheese awards and I'm pretty sure she went back to New Zealand with cheese intentions... It may be a while before she counts as history, but I think it's only a matter of time...

I don't know much about her but a quick search tells me she does live in NZ now and is doing stuff to promote cheese. I will look into it further as it sounds like there is an interesting story there

@@cheesehistory she made a big impact on the status and quality of artisan cheese here a few years back. If she does the same for you the we'll certainly be hearing more about your cheese.
