Queeeeeeen you're like a genius...Wits has such a high APS requirement
I love the fact that coding is just one factor of CS, it's all about solving complex world problems using mathematical formulas and computers
Yeah that’s so true! It has a lot to do with broadening your scope of thinking and challenging you to come up with innovative ideas to solve problems
Firstly, nice video!!
Secondly, heads up for those viewing this. CAM is changing in the next few years, expect more Python to align better with CompSci. There's some exciting changes in the works 👍
Congratulations on passing second year, Cheryl 🎊🌻
Literally half of the CS degree is Math, I can't 😂😂
Thank you so much sunshine! Literally😂 I've hardly done maths this year though at Sussex😂
And your algebra is really doable at UCT our algebra course is flames so much so I will enjoy repeating it ...AP maths is the key guys!!!
It's probably much harder because of the lockdown but hang in there. You've got this✨
@@CherylMoyo luckily the course can be taken throughout our undergrad normally final year I'm second it's not a pre-requisite its just sharpens our proof skills and they take time otherwise the main math major is an A always!!🤣🤣👌
@@thabolikotsi5765 How's your Real Analysis or Mathematical Analysis in general there bro?
This helped a lot😱 thanks for the video
Thank you for watching✨
Thanks a lot. This video really helped me understand more about the course.
I’m glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching✨
Thanks so much for the video🤩🤩🤩
Now I'm very excited 😍
Thank you so much for watching✨
I've literally been looking for videos of computer science at Sussex for ages 🙌🏾
That’s so great! I’m glad I could help!
I'll also be doing my first year in CS at Wits this Year!!😅👌
OMG that's so exciting! I hope it all goes well✨
Yaaaas final year student I'm a second year and will take five year for undergrad
Between your grade 11 report and grade 12 report which one was better ?
I am accepted at NWU for extended computer science and electronic, and I'm currently studying first year dip IT in communication at WSU. We barely do any maths (only probability, functions and binary number systems)the rest is the very basic of programming and IT theory, I really have a lot of free time and I am not good at maths and I really want to improve my maths before enrolling for CS but how do I do it?
I'm in 11th grade and I study Math, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Geography. I am very interested in Computer Science and that's what I want to pursue, but I am worried that It will be difficult for me In University because I don't do IT in High school.
How can I prepare myself before I finish matric, please recommend any RUclips channels / videos or any books I can study
Hi there! I don't think you will struggle in university if you didn't do IT as long as you apply yourself and study regularly. However, I will link some websites and videos for you to check out since you want to get a head start. I haven't used some of these because I learned all my coding from my first year lectures.
Here's a link to an intro to programming using C++ RUclips video: ruclips.net/video/vLnPwxZdW4Y/видео.html
Here's a link to some courses on Udemy. Most of them are under R200 which is quite affordable considering coding courses are usually thousands of Rands: www.udemy.com/courses/search/?q=intro+to+programming+c%2B%2B
Here's a link to CodeAbbey which is basically a site that you can use to practice your coding. They give you different problem solving questions similar to the examples I gave in this video then it will test your code on different examples and grade the accuracy of your code. It is very similar to how you are tested in first year: www.codeabbey.com/
I hope that wasn't information overload and that you'll find these resources helpful!
@@CherylMoyo Thank You Very Much
Thank you for going the extra mile! I'm sure this information will be helpful and thanks for such inspiring words
I will definitely devote my time into learning this.
Hey. I’m 14 and i really would like to learn CS in university and learn how to code and the subjects that i’m looking to take next year are CAT, Life Science and Business/Tourism( still deciding) i’m not good in Physics and i don’t want to do it next year so do you really need Physics to study CS?
Hi. Not to discourage you but you may want to reconsider your options. If you're interested in Coding, you can study IT.
Check with your teacher whether CAT counts for University entrance.
Also, Maths is not optional in Computer Science and you have to achieve at least 60% for most universities and generally, 50% should be fine for IT.
Physics is not compulsory, at least for a good amount of universities that I know of. My advice to you is to consider IT instead of Computer Science.
Regards
Hi! I didn’t do IT in high school and I was still able to do Computer Science at Wits. I also didn’t do physics and I turned out fine. However, certain universities calculate their entry scores differently and some require you to have at least physics or IT. I did a video on choosing your high school subjects where I gave an in depth explanation so check that out and comment on that video if you need more clarification✨
Hey Cheryl, just wanted to ask if wits does the same thing as UCT does in terms of having to double major computer science with another program?
Yes you have the option of majoring in Coms 3 with either Physics, Applied Math, or Mathematics or Computer Applications.
Introduction to Data Structures and Algorithms has me by the neck rn here at UP : (
I feel your pain! It was a struggle. Didn't think I'd get through it but I managed to. Just try and visual everything, even write/draw the processes on paper. That's how I finally understood linked lists and also check out some videos on RUclips! Wishing you luck✨
Wow thank you once more
hey,so i finished school last year with a 75% for maths,do you think i would survive computer sc,i did work hard but i honestly think i fluked it.
75% in maths is amazing!! I have no doubt that you'll be fine as long as you work hard, study hard and attend your lectures & seminars✨
What subjects do I need to do to be able to do Computer science,I'm currently in High School
Pure Maths is the most important one. Other subjects that will help you are IT or CAT.
Omg girl I would really like to talk to you about getting into computer science. Can I email you please and answer my questions when you have time
Hi love! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! My email address is for business enquiries only but if you want to chat then you can either post in the comments section or DM me on Instagram!
Hey🌸, so I wanted to apply for honours at wits, but the requirements say that we need a mathematical equivalent 🙈. In my second and even now in my third year we haven't taken any Maths modules, we just learnt different programming languages. Does this mean I can't apply for the honours? I only had a Maths module in my first year, but that's about it🙈.
Hi love! I’m not well-versed in how honours programmes work at Wits but I will try my best to help. Can you message me on Instagram so that I can ask you a few more questions to better understand your situation
@@CherylMoyo sure😊
You need second year math to do honours at Wits - they are very strict on this (unfortunately!).
Good luck with finding an honours program :)
Why not just do honours at Unisa and spend the extra time on internships? or do honours at the university where you got your undergrad?
Hi, I really need some some help. I currently want to study computer science which was a last minute choice I made. The problem is, I need Maths. I did maths lit in high school so im unable to apply. Can you please give me some advice on what to do.
Hi! So I think I talked about this in my how to choose your subjects video, but as far as I know there really isn’t a way to get around this unless you somehow figure out a way to do maths and write your maths NSC. There may be another way around this but I don’t know of one. The maths in computer science is pretty intense. As someone who got high 80s in Maths and AP Maths, I found it fairly difficult so if you struggle with maths then I wouldn’t really recommend doing computer science. But good luck with everything and I hope you find a way to study what you really want✨
I already know JS, C, SQL pretty well ( Self Taught ) and im currently learning Python. Programming is not the problem. Not having the right subjects is. Not sure why people think you need math to code, maybe it helps.
You don’t need maths to learn how to code, but you do need it if you’re trying to study computer science at Wits or UCT etc. because you will be taking Algebra, Calculus, Abstract Mathematics, Computational and Applied Mathematics, Linear Algebra and a lot more. Your computer science courses probably only make up 20% of your modules. And you can’t progress to the next year without passing your maths courses

Can you get into wits university when you doing Maths lit in high school
Yes. There are courses u can do at wits that dont even require maths to starts with, but u need pure maths to do computer science at wits. If u do maths lit and u want to study CS u can apply at a technikon like TUT
Hey,plz i need an answer 🙏
Im in grade 11,im doing mathematics, history, life sciences and business studies...(yes i know, like why would i want a cs degree)
But i really want to do it.
I dont take physics!thats the problem.
Is physical science very very important or compulsory?
Hi! I didn’t do physics and I was still able to get through first year✨
Hey can I study computer sciences with math literacy
As far as I know, you can't. You typically need at least an A or B in core maths
At TUT you can study it if you get a code 7. Or you can study ICT which you can study with a code 5-6 in Maths Literacy but it doesn't involve maths.
Cheryl how much was your aps score for you to enter wits?
Is CS harder than Industrial engineering
im in an afrikaans school, do you think the maths modules will be difficult doing in english for the first time?
It may be a bit challenging at first but one of my friend’s in first year also went to an Afrikaans school and she was able to keep up in Maths because most of it is practical anyway and there isn’t a lot of theory. So as long as you know how to calculate and do the steps, you should be fine✨
Are jobs available though in cs🤔
It really depends on where you are and what your grades are like, but my friends from uni haven't had issues getting graduate jobs in CS✨
should i get textbooks?
Is this for all universities
its chaii at wits guys, be prepared.
I'm doing grade 12 and I love algebra and calculus but I'm not good at paper 2 maths , what would be your advice,?
The only thing from paper 2 that will resurface is trigonometry. The rest isnt there
7:05 wait a minute, so I'll have to know what sine60° is by head😭😭
how many programming languages are taught overall ?
I think about 3 or 4. But you will only use C++ in your computer science courses
Wits cs teaches c++ in 1st year, java with php and mysql, and pythonin 2nd year then c and java in 3rd year.
If you take IS you'll also do c#
You will start with Python in IAP, then transition to C++ for the rest of the year in Coms I, if you have Information systems you will also do C#.
So do you need physics for cs??
nope
I just got accepted into Wits for Computer Science😅😅👌
How long did it take to get a response? Its been 7 days now😫
@@khanyi721 2 days
@@khanyi721 I think maybe it's because I asked early considering I also got into mechanical engineering and then for ukzn as well
