Jethro Tull's Aqualung is one of those albums that I've been meaning to get round to for literally years, and I've owned it for about 18 months and still not listened to it! Well, time to put that right.
I've split the video into a few parts due to copyright issues.
Part 1 is Aqualung and Cross-eyed Mary.

You say you’re sporadic with your record choices but this makes complete sense to me. My father raised me on Jethro Tull, specifically this album, and as an adult I find myself heavily into more modern progressive rock, specifically Tool. I think a lot of modern prob rock wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for JT but they rarely get the credit they deserve.

    Thick As A Brick
    Aqualung

Welcome to Tull, Jim! Shame it's taken you so long!😉 As I commented on Nick& Lex's reaction, it was exactly 50 years ago this week that I went to my first concert with Tull touring behind this album, so it's fun to have two of my favorite channels helping me revisit that. Hope that you get some sort of collab going with N&L - sounds like it could be great fun! Can't wait for side 2 of this and would like to second the motion that you continue on to Thick As A Brick. Then there are SO many more to come that you're going to love. Well done!

Martin Barre is one of the most underrated & forgotten guitarist ever. If you know or follow Rick Beato is he agrees. Ian always surrounded himself with the highest quality musicians & took no truck with drugs or drink. The line up change frequently but Martin was always there.

Please please please consider doing yourself a great favor and just go back to the very first album and listen to how the band changes and progresses they were very very different for that first album or two and then really took on different flavors throughout the career there's especially great three album grouping starting with songs from the wood...
It'll take you a while to get to those but it's going to be a great journey if you really would like to do it correctly just my humble opinion / 2 cents...

As amazing as the lp is, you are still just scratching the surface of the total trip that JT is... Ian Anderson is the BEST showman, best experienced in their live performances! I was fortunate to see the band thrice during their heyday, during the '70s, and I urge those who are already drawn to their audio work to check out their concert footage, readily available on YT. For example: ruclips.net/video/eBP4eQOVC8I/видео.html

BTW Your comparisons are awkward bc many of your references came AFTER the song by several years. AQUALUNG WAS HUGE HIT!!!!!! when it was first released and brought Tull to the US with YES as Opening act for their first tour in 71. At 15 we stumbled into the show for $5. I had no idea who Tull were or that was their song. I prefer the rest of the album even more. Also I had just learned about YES. So it was a life changing mind blowing night.

I love this album, one of my all times favorites any genre. Not that everything is great on it but enough to newer really tire of it.
Title track, My God, Hymn 43 fav tracks. The original vinyl got real good quality, i think this one got the bass/drums a tad more prominent.
You volume is really low though, both Mic and music, but especially mic. Have to use the "boost volume" and max vol to hear you. Just move it closer to your face :)

No Tull? You must have been actively hiding 😄
But I get it - if you look at Tull pictures and their theatrical antiques from the 1970s it may seem like about the uncoolest rock band imaginable. But so much great music.
This - together with 'Stand Up' - is their most rock and fluent album, but move forward into their prog years and you might find a lot of fantastic music.

The clarity of the recording is definitively Steven Wilson's quality. Btw, you still don't use the arm lift at the start of a record. That's what it's for: it reduces the chance of damaging the needle. But please carry on. :-)

Why the name Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson tells it ... at the beginning of their musical adventure they played in clubs ... and live they sucked! So every night they changed the name of the band, hoping that the audience would go and see them not noticing the "trick". And coming up with a different name every night wasn't easy. It so happened that the night they had a huge success and positive feedback from the public they had randomly chosen the name "Jethro Tull" .... and the name remained that. Congratulations on the Jim channel!

HI JIm, as always, I enjoy your videos and reflections on the music that I am passionate about. Unfortunately, this one was extremely complicated, since it does not have the option of subtitles like others that you have uploaded. I don't know if that can be solved by you or if it is the responsibility of you tube. I just wanted to let you know, and see to solve it to facilitate the vision and understanding of the video to those of us who speak or understand little English. Greetings!

Hi, I don't make the choices about subtitles, it is an automatic feature that I don't control. However, I did recently change the way I upload videos and trhat might have made a change that was unintentional. I'll try to check tis for the next time I upload to ensure it's definitely nothing to do with me. Sorry, and thanks for taking the time to visi and comment!

I'm going to ask an honest question. Yes, how can you not know all this music? I'm only a few years older than you, but grew up on most of this stuff, as my dad was a HUGE 70s rock fan, but so were many of my friends. Honestly, bands like Tull, Yes, Genesis, Zep, Floyd, etc. make listening to today's music pointless, for we were SO spoiled with such trend-setting excellence.

    • @JimNewstead
      @JimNewstead  2 года назад

I know Zep and Floyd, Rush, bits of Genesis, Wishbone Ash, loads of others, but it's easy NOT to hear it. I'm the oldest so didn't have a brother or sister playing this stuff, my parents certainly didn't, and no, this wasn't on radio in the UK apart from very specific shows at very specific times. I didn't have my own radio until I was 12 or 13 so into the early 80s at which point it was all about Iron Maiden and Metallica!!!
