  • This video will hopefully assist you in choosing the right tool to suit you.and your style of stitching.
Due to it's size and to make it easier to find the iron you want to see, it has been broken down into a number of parts.
In addition to this, you can download the specification sheet from. www.armitageleather.com/shop

Well since this video was made Dixon have gone bust and the Euro rate is now so low that the 8 tooth iron is £131 not £86, should have bought some a while back! :(

I bought 9 spi set 10+2 and also bought 2 teeth inverse. also bought 3.38 and 3.85mm(2 teeth). I found it cheaper in France than in the USA and other countries. I did not use it yet, because I don't do many and use crimson 2 sets, 4z(2 sets), since leather 2 sets, another Chinese(154$) and 3-4 cheap Chinese and kyoshen elle. Maybe later I will keep 2-3 sets and the rest of them resold. Thinking to buy a Ks_blade set and I see many use them.

Saludos.

If this tool is tool steel, then it is NOT case hardened, it would be hardened and then tempered back down to give it more "spring", case hardening would made it glass hard, and extremely brittle, especially given the small cross sectional area of the tines, they would break the first time it was used.

You're pronouncing Chinois very well actually. It's fil chinois (fil is thread in english) and you would pronounce it just like the word "fill", but with less emphasis on the L, just a quick L. You know what I mean.

This is the first time I have had a general question, I hope hope you don't mind. I'm fortunate to have a Dixon plough gauge which is my preferred method of strap cutting, until now. I have had to cut straps 1.25 " wide from a Bakers oak bark stirrup butt 5-6 mm thick. This is the third or fourth butt I have had, I failed to cut the straps on my own, one pal helped to hold the butt still, and another pal helped push my elbow as I pushed and held the plough. The pain in the palm of my hand was like tooth ache, I cuts four straps and had to stop. With hindsight I could, and should, have honed the blade between cuts, never the less very comfortable and impractical.
I watched on Y Tube a wooden strap cutter being used were the user pulled the cutter towards himself, your comments would be appreciated.
    With kind regards... Mark

It does sound like you need to hone the blade somewhat, it should not be that hard.
I have several strap cutters but tend to always use the cheaper 'Strap Cutter' made by The Leather Works Company.
This is mainly because I am left handed and the other strap cutters are right handed.
That being said, it cuts a dream, changeable blade, but easy to remove and sharpen and very very easy to use.
I mainly use it on bridle leather 4-5mm thick and it cuts fine, but so does the Osborne.
Have a go at sharpening your blade, it should not be hard to cut a strap
If you put too much pressure onto a cut, it moves the leather and you will be cutting a slight curve into a straight strap.
      Regards
      Nigel

Hey Nigel...quick question on the awl size for such a tiny hole width. Did you grind one down to the right size or did you find one that tiny somewhere. The ones I have are WAY too wide to try a 12 spi stitch...

Hey, a quick question to anyone who may know. I'm looking to buy some Tiger thread and I can't find anywhere here in Spain where I live. Any tips on a good supplier in Europe? Thanks a bunch in advance.

In considering the pricking irons and not the stitching irons only because the latter pass through the leather entirely and there is no need for an awl to follow, isn't the shape of the hole and therefore the brand of iron used academic since the shape of the awl will dictate the final shape of the hole? Especially on the back side.

Oh my God, that is an easily replicated piece of stainless steel. Hmb, I'll be making a 3d printable file of the whole set so you guys can have them all for pennies on the dollar. They're out of copyright protection, so there's not going to be an issue with legality even in the EU. I normally would feel a bad about doing that, but their prices are so absurd it should be illegal.
