- A simple lesson I made for Ibanez covering how to play Country style licks. Some easy routes to playing different styles of music, some nice little tricks and pedal steel bends too. Give me a thumbs up if you found it useful folks :-)
I love country style guitar. Albert Lee, Marty Stuart, John Jorgensen, Kenny Vaughan, are some of my fave players. Wish I could play like they do.
Met Jerry Donahue a number of times with the Hellecasters nicest guy ever had some time to kill and gave me a 2 hour lesson. I was on heaven And will always be grateful for the life experience. Sadly Jerry suffered a stroke and is unable to play. A sheer humble genius.
I have been playing guitar for almost 40 years and Jerry is one of the very best IMO . He has played for so many other artists but my favourite era is when he played in Fotheringay with Sandy Denny .
Jerry also loved richard thompson and one day we were talking guitars and Lenny Breau came up . I ended up sending Jerry Live at Shelly’ manhole which he loved. I saw Lenny many dozens of times in Toronto in the early 70’s . Genius
@@martydibergi5228 Richard Thompson is also one of my favourite players/ writers. Talking of Lenny Breau, there is a wonderful instrumental by Danny Gatton titled 'One for Lenny' which Danny dedicated to Lenny Breau !

Great to hear some country music on something other than a Tele (which of course are wonderful for country and lots of types of music). I think Danny Gatton would have been happy to hear you playing country.

Very helpful as I begin approaching various styles. Well I have owned guitars for decades, I have never really learned more than basic chord functions and basic blues riffs. This video helps me a lot and has actually educated me as to what kind of presentation works best for me.

Hi Lee. I too have that cd. I became phone friends with Danny and he told me Lenny was his favourite. Danny told me had had hundreds of hours of recorded music of him and Danny. We'll never hear it unfortunately. Even though I saw Danny about 6 times live I was too shy to introduce myself but we did have hour long guitar tone talks😄 Saw him at the Horseshoe in Toronto and Sonny Landreth opened. Holey Moley

Immensely useful. I think the 'ready reckoner' positions help massively with this for the intermediate player since it's too hard to think of the theoretical basis when you get started. This would make a great series - jazz, metal, funk etc.

been playing since 62. Started on kazoo and uke. Then acoustic and electric guitar learning Mr guitar licks.
Then 5 years of piano lessons. Then paid for my gas giving guitar lessons. Tried wind and
drums.. Not my forte. 15 years ago stated teaching 5 string banjo out of a book called (you can play banjo.) Not that I like music. Love to play the claw and Brent mason leads. My amps need some TLC. Was a TV tech in the Eighties and and nineties. Probably my most favorite music is chickenpickin.

I was hoping you could show us slowly how you were burning down the A Major pentatonic though
When you bend a string while keeping another note just fretted, the fretted note will go flat if the guitar has an unlocked vibrato bar.
As you bend the note, to some degree, the increased pressure will cause the strings to go flat.
For that reason, and for the sound of the bridge single-coil as well as the brass saddles, Country works the absolute best on a Telecaster.
Those locking nuts also steal a little tone.
you're partially right. when doing bends on a floating bridge, like an Ibanez, I have to hold the bar to stop the bridge moving. that helps remove the out of tune issue. as for the saddles on a tele. bollocks, mate. all the pickups do is convert the string vibration into noise. the pickups don't give a fuck what material the bridge is made of. any audible to you difference, directly to you, bridge material makes, is just that. it doesn't translate/transfer via electromagnetic response. you have to remember a string is sat between two points. that tone wood thing is bullshit too.

When I was a much younger guitarist, and when they first came out around 1980, I had two Floyd-Rose vibrato assemblies on Warmouth parts guitars. I also, at one point, had something called a Trem-Setter (Stew-Mac, around $20) which counteracted that tendency to drop in pitch when bending.
It probably worked ok, but it was such a pain. String breaks were problematic and it destroyed the tone of the guitar.
I since then learned how to set up a Strat with a stock arm and block, and I use it with locking tuners (but no locking nut).
- Now onto the subject of bridges and tone woods:
I’ve been listening to these debates for about 50 years; I’ll assume that’s longer than you, and that’s no dis.
This goes on in the drum world (maple, birch, etc.),
- and in the tube amp world (tubes vs. transistors vs. digital modelling, and resistors like carbon, carbon comp, metal film, etc.- and caps (polypropalene, polystyrene, silver mica, ceramic, etc - and tubes etc., etc., etc,)
- and in the recording world ... and in pretty much every area of music.
You don’t think there’s a sound difference between brass, steel, wood, bone, etc.?
If a bridge or nut is not slotted properly, you know that can cause a nasty sound.
Why wouldn’t the material also contribute to the tone?
Watch some Warmouth RUclips videos where they compare various woods.
I have ... I don’t think any of it is bogus (other than say “oxygen-free cables” and that kind of thing).
But metals, woods, components of all kinds definitely each make a small contribution to your overall sound.
Change one resistor in a tube amp to metal film, and you won’t even notice it.
Change them all, and you will sterilize the amp. Builders don’t advertise carbon comp. resistors for no reason.
Those in the know want them.
Same with the one steel saddle on my Tele bridge, it’s just a little brighter than the brass.
And listen to Tele guys talk about Glendale vs. Callahan bridges ... those things can totally change how a Tele sounds.
Just keep an open mind, ok? Don’t get played, but be receptive. Let your ears decide.

I would imagine that the trem would make the pedal steel bends harder to do versus a hard tail.
Not harder to do just screws up the bn pitch of the other strings when one is being bent. Floating bridges are definitely not ideal for pedal steel
This is great Lee thanks at last something for country enthusiasts! Can there really be that many metal players out there. I have to admit I'm struggling a bit with the pedal trick as I play 11s and my fingers are strong but dropping down a gauge would sort it. Great country tones on a guitar you wouldn't expect. Can you say what it is and what you are playing through?
Thanks Andrew, yes of course- it's an Ibanez S5570Q RBB and I plugged into a Laney IRT Pulse on the cleanest setting..which was connected to the recording software via USB :)
LEE WRATHE, can you show more pedal steel lick examples in another youtube video more examples?
is your trem blocked? I've always noticed when bending with another static note that the static note goes flat due to the nature of the Floyd
+Brian J Hi Brian, no it's not locked but I know what you mean. I tend to try and naturally compensate when playing on guitars with a Floyd. It's a totally different experience to a Tele that's for sure! :)

What are your string gauges? They have to be ultra light.

This video has nothing to do with real country playing.
He did some hybrid picking , and I’m a huge tele fan, but it doesn’t mean u have to use one when u play county. I like the fact he uses what he likes and his tone was solid even if u prefer a tele, which I do but he has really good tone and gave a great lesson.
Well hybrid without a flat pick , which technically may not be text book hybrid, but u can definitely draw from the examples he gives by using hybrid. Good lesson.
