- Mark Cryer testing his mild 462ci big block chevy powered '09 Smart Car with full custom 8.50 certified chrome moly frame and Ford 9" rearend. First run in video is an 11.74 @113.76 and then Mark and his son Nick changed front springs and made adjustments to shocks to try to get it to wheelie higher as you see in the second run. Best run of the day was a 11.72@114.43. You have to see the car in person to appreciate the quality of the conversion. You either Love it or Hate it! JUST BROKE INTO THE 9'S!!!! • 9 SEC SMART CAR! Very cool!!! I've always wanted to see one with the blower sticking out the front end. It would resemble the little model car I had as a kid with the crazy looking monster out the roof with the gear shifter. Very nicely done. I wish I had the shop, money and talent to do it.

He's sitting in the very back of it, that's how it fits. I'd guess if this were crashed on the street, the engine would likely decapitate you at about the waist.
Its still be sorted out guys. The frame is all custom built. The big block is mild not race. New trans was recently installed and it pulls the wheels twice as high. Just wait when its all dialed in!

Great vid. back in my(the)day late60's early 70's at a dragstrip known as U.S.30 there was a car called NO BIG THING about the same size as smart car think it was a simca or Renault w/v8 . more wheelies bounced all over the place. Fun to watch. Thanks for posting Rt.66 is a great track.

Not mine but a guy who pits next to us. Can't remember the horsepower but I know he has tried different trans/gear setups along with suspension. It's a handful with the short wheelbase so that is the sticking point trying to get it to launch straight. He hasn't had it out this year at all but hopefully I will get a chance to ask him the specs

Very cool car.Excellent workmanship.I understand that such a radical build needs to be sorted out with a low power motor.Mid 9s should be a joke with a mild BBC.I think I would have gone LS3 to save some weight,but I still love the car.I think it's going to be a handful when you start making some power.Good luck.

victoryredcolorado i mean its pretty impractical... a t/a with a bbc or a bbc fox would run 9s all day which is a fair comparison when you look at the weight of the cars.. as for what im racing a cam head full bolt on '99 t/a running 11.39 @ 121 on nitto street drag radials. stock t56 stock 10 bolt.
Trix Thats the whole point but the chassis is still not setup correctly and the wheeelbase makes it quite the handful and once figured out times will drop...it is certified for 8.50 so yeah lol
what's certified for 8.50? the cage? that's just a safety rating. but it is a pretty insane build and its not my money so idgaf lol. good luck on going sub 10! or whatever the goal is i hope you get it

In the early 1970's the Mustangs, Camaros, Vettes and Mopar Muscle Cars were running in the high 13's. An original GTO with 389 and "3-deuces" barely broke high 13's with fat rear tires. Stock tires they were mid-14's. If you think something in the Elevens isn't fast try doing it. Troll...
randy109 Yeah, but suspension and weight where terrible, not to mention horrible tires and overall technology. If this smart is supposed to be powered by a big block chevy and taking in acount it's weight and the chasis it's showing 11 seconds makes no impact whatsoever to me.

Many street rods dropped a 289 in a VW beetle like did with the Smart ,then pinto's and Vega'srunning 429&454 in back over a modified transaxle.Even saw a cushman or two done that way.Many forgot about the wheeliebar and had something that was uncontrolable.

The guy did a great job of converting, but it still looks like a Hot Wheel I had as a kid. It looks like he just wanted a conversation piece and for his efforts I commend him. I still want to see a race between a smart car and a Yugo.
