    What's the deal? She has an incredible voice, sings it impeccably beautifully in her own special way, the set and staging is beautiful albeit in a super quirky way but in a way that makes it interesting. Not every world-class production has to be exactly the same to be considered worthy of legend. Come on, people. If you can't appreciate it, try to humbly accept that maybe you still have some room to grow as a lover of the arts...

      My biggest criticism of this version is the fact that during this aria, she is supposed to be wound, since she is a clockwork woman.
      Hoffman is oblivious to this fact of this because Copilius give Hoffman glasses to make her look like a real woman.
      Without that a major aspect of the aria is lost.
      Without it, she is simply singing (masterfully I will add); not performing the piece.

She can do all of these things without showing strain and perform the part at the same time. Always astounds me. What an incredible talent and skill she has.

    She's not just a BRILLIANT singer. She's also a BRILLIANT PERFORMER. Not a lot of opera singers both male or female are able to entertain and sing there given roles. There are too many "park and bark" opera singers out there. But i also want to be entertained and not in a broadway musical sort of way. But i want them to make me believe the role they are playing and especially what they are conveying when there singing said roles. And Diana delivers that on ALL fronts in my humble opinion.

    Hearing Diana sing this role is what caused me to understand why certain opera roles are not particularly for everyone even if you have the vocal range to sing it.
    Diana sings this song beautifully, but when compared to Luciana Serra, Diana doesn’t sound as robotic, even though she is singing the same note and applying trills and vibrato where Serra does. Her voice is much heavier than Serra’s, but she tends to add unintended drama to the song where Serra does not.
    However, in the Queen of the Night, Serra still has magnificent high notes. She has a shrill diamond sparkle on her high F6’s that nobody has duplicated, but she doesn’t have enough weight to her voice in her middle range to really “make the point” solely judging in how much raw power her voice is putting out. Since she has a higher voice type than Diana, she however has much more precise pitch control than Diana.
    Diana has wonderful agility, but it isn’t as flat, straight pitch, precise as Serra’s, which is due to Diana having a heavier voice type

    Damrau is a dramatic coloratura, but this drama is really intense in her voice, which is perfect in most opera arias. In this aria a more "flat" voice is required. It's not that her voice is bad, for example in "die Zauberflüte" she is simply stunning. Just this aria is not for her voice....The choir and the orchestra are perfect though...

    • @unFayemous
      @unFayemous 6 лет назад +33

      Penny Terzi that's true, especially if you think about the context of the song. As the queen of the night, she had to be full of wrath and anger.
      Olympia is literally a doll with no real capabilities for any such strong emotions...

      @@sarahsuthoofficial a dramatic soprano have a dark voice and don't have super high notes, the dramatic coloratura, have agility and a strong voice and super high note. Diana Damrau was a pure coloratura when she's younger.

    • @Michael-hz2pl
      @Michael-hz2pl 4 года назад +6

      Sarah Sutho Official
      A dramatic soprano is a heavier voice type than a dramatic coloratura. Then there’s the coloratura soprano that’s lighter than dramatic coloratura.
      In mainstream music, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé is one way to compare drama in the vocal folds.
      Whitney possesses a Mezzo soprano voice, while Beyoncé possesses a coloratura mezzo soprano voice.
      Whitney Houston has more power when singing the same note as Beyoncé, but Whitney does not have, even remotely, comparable vocal agility. This is due to Whitney having a heavier/more dramatic voice. Since Whitney’s vocal cords are heavier/more dramatic, they do not move as easily as Beyoncé’s, which is why Beyoncé can hit 30 different notes in less than 5 seconds, but never sounds as “loud” or as “dramatic” as Whitney.
      Heavier voices means big sound less agility.
      Lighter voices mean the opposite.
      Natalie Dessay is an example of a true coloratura. Even though her and Diana hit the same notes in Queen of the Night, Diana has a more fierce/sharp/expressive sound that drives the point across, while Natalie sings like a flute\violin and relies more on her acting to drive the point across.
      Which is why Natalie sounds better on Doll Song, and Diana sounds better on Queen of the Night.

      Even if the composer clearly stated "I want this to be a serious scene to showcase the soprano's agility and perfect intonation", once your work is put out there it belongs to the public and, consequently, the producers. Offenbach surely cannot rise from his grave and storm on stage to yell "That's not what I meant, y'all".
      I think that it's nice to see one of the most beloved sopranos of the decade not take herself too seriously. And, to be honest, even the most harsh parodies reveal affection rather than scorn.

This is a good example of it. Like... where is the winding up of the doll?!?! The music is literally scored for that! Her voice is wonderfully powerful and I love her volume control but I feel like this aria has subtleties that are important for the impact it makes and her strong voice doesn't quite do it justice. Loved the performance though. =]

    She's not being rewound because she's changing tracks, they could've added a tape sound effect.

    Don't forget that it is not only a song. It is an opera so Damrau just follow the director. If the action is not good, it is not her mistake. She just has fault if her voice is not right
