- A young man in London is chosen to be king of a futuristic Nigerian village.
OBA is used with permission from Femi Oladigbolu. Learn more at femiladi.com.
In an unspecified future, the king of a Nigerian village has passed away. The elders of the village converge to find a new leader to succeed. The visions reveal a new figure: a young man living an unassuming life in South London.
Meanwhile, Ayo is mired in the ups and downs of life in England, struggling for meaning, purpose and belonging. But he begins to hear drums and experience visions, pulling him to a greater fate than the ordinary life he's living at the moment.
Directed and written by Femi Oladigbolu, this elegantly distinctive sci-fi/fantasy short is striking for its blend of gritty urban naturalism, striking Afrofuturist aesthetic and an ambitious, time- and space-spanning narrative about inheritance, ancestry and self-worth. Enfolded in the search for a royal successor is a deeper tale about a young man's spiritual awakening to his fate, a journey that immerses him in a realm of African mythology, deities and heritage.
The narrative propulsion is achieved through a gorgeous weaving of sight, sound and music, opening with a riveting, visually stunning sequence of a king dying and elders converging, set to the sounds of a vocal requiem and viscerally immersing viewers into a realm of magic and mysticism. In its indelible, haunting images, it's not unlike the world-building of modern sci-fi blockbusters like Dune or Black Panther, rich with otherworldly detail and an almost alien grandeur and conveyed with costumes, visuals and rituals reflecting the Yoruba religion.
It's in marked contrast to the next sequence, where we meet the man that the elders envisioned. Played by actor Samuel Adewunmi with world-weary existential exhaustion, Ayo has no idea of what awaits him, as preoccupied as he is with the struggles he faces. Yet the borders between his world and the more mystical realm grow porous, and hints of another world and fate call out to him. At first uncertain and disbelieving, Ayo is pulled into his visions, discovering the power, richness and majesty of his old ancestry and new inheritance.
Memorable, powerful and bold, OBA is a feast for the senses, where much of the storytelling and emotional development happens through the alchemy of music, rhythm, totemic images and human and camera movement. Taken at its dazzling surface level, it's about a man glimpsing his ultimate destiny. But it also works beautifully on a metaphorical level, as someone mired in contemporary struggles gains deeper meaning and purpose through connecting with aspects of his heritage, endowing his sense of self with an expansiveness and possibility that his real-life circumstances offer. This is just the beginning of Ayo's journey, as he steps into his power and embraces his future. - Кино
Hi I’m Femi Oladigbolu writer and director of Oba! Thank you so much for the likes and comments happy to answer any questions about the film.
Is there a longer version?
Or is there a movie based on this coming soon?
Outstanding short film, I have known this channel for over 5 years so I personally think I like seeing more of this.
Where is the film shot?
Are the three dancing figures gods that sanctify the young man's calling to leadership?
Who are the people around the older deceased king?
Thank you!
@@uknowamsaying yessss working on making this into a feature film version!!!
Friend: what you on tomorrow?
Me: same sh*t different day
Me, tomorrow: *King's coronation*

Yes! That's a great description... ancient and futuristic at the same time.
thank you! That was the literally what we were going for, so happy that came across
I've spent the last 11 years immersed in African (incl. Yoruba) history & literature... this is the first film (of any kind) I've seen that does justice to that varied and variegated culture, which the rest of us know so little of.
thank you!!!
If you haven't done it yet, read Credo Mutwa's books. They'll blow your mind.
We need more from this film team.
Agreed 🇿🇦🇨🇫
soooon come
Finally omeleto recognizes my heritage ❤
Naija for life🇳🇬🇳🇬
Always shining bright
This is such an excellent exploration of the culture, and vivid in so many ways. Congratulations, Femi!
How can it be vivid? Most of the film is just showing plenty of moves without any explanation.
There isnt much dialog also
Very well done! Never heard of Yoruba but I see that the ppl who have in the comments certainly approve.
That spoke to me in a way that didn't require ears, but the soul heard everything.

One of the greatest shorts ever!
It shows what I've always believed: no matter where you were born, your ancestral roots and your blood will always count more than anything.
The new Lion King is here to rule.
Well done!
It's like dune and black panther had a child, love it so much
This was so beautiful! Every aspect of it. And why did I tear up a little at the end? Wonderful work, good people. Just wonderful.
Also, I want to see more. Seems like there's so much more to this story.
This was very good!
The lead actor was in a film called "The Last Tree" and it explored some of these themes too(wasn't the central motif) people should deffo give that a watch too.
I certainly didn’t want this amazing short to end. Amazing job done here!
Oh wow, this is everything! Leagues above what ive seen in years. The strength and beauty and wisdom and creative excellence when we tell our own stories is second to none! Thank you, thank you, thank you.
My name is SHANGO! And I approve this video

OMG! ASHE! 💛🧡💃🏾
Beautiful! Incredible images! The young man was living a life of hopelessness and now will have regal purpose. The body of people had glowing skin.

We are all destined for greater things than we could ever know!
Blessed be to all who watch this.
You are loved. You are enough.
Oh man, it was just getting good....
EDIT: First with an actual comment. I could have been first, but I decided to watch the film first, then contribute with my comment....
That should count for something.
It is fun to be first. Someone else is claiming first. You’ll have to duke it out 😅
Humans are so😂

Wakanda Forever... [director's cut!...]
Yep. It was exactly as the description stated.
I believe there is significance in the color of their clothes in the end. The blue and gold. I was listening to Joe Rogan podcast today with Paul Stamets . They spoke about mushrooms and its rarity in regards to the golden mushrooms and its blue liquid that comes from mycelium.
Incredible. Very inspiring.
Beautiful! Mesmerising and dreamlike. Love the sense of destiny and the reverence with which the characters treat one another. How wonderful would the world be if we could all treat each other that way?
Intriguing! Would love to see where this one goes... Thanks!
Yeah i'm wondering what happens
Amazing film 🔥
excellente!!! excellente!!! excellente!!! A film about the matters that we state on my channel...beautifulle.
Scintillating, vibrant, beautiful
Does Oba mean king in Nigerian? it is related to Aba - father?
No.
Oba is the generic referral term for "King" amongst the Yoruba and Edo tribes of Nigeria. Within the Yoruba tribe, with many major and minor kings within the tribe (just the way ancient Ireland was with fiefdoms), a King can also have other titles based on the city, town, area or sub-tribe they rule over, e.g. Ooni of Ife, Alaafin of Oyo, The Olubadan of Ibadan, Soun of Ogbomoso, Alake of Egbaland, Alaketu of Ketu, Awujale of Ijebuland etc.
The Edo monarchy title is monotonous as they have only one King in their entire empire, so they only have an "Oba of Benin".
Nigeria is made up of several tribes (more than 200), many which have their own different terms for Kings and some might also have titles based on city, town, area or sub-tribe.
@9:41 … two of the women (during the bowing) may potentially be chosen or initiating his “ queen “they didn’t necessarily bow all the way, just something I noticed 🤷🏽♀️
🥹Loved the message in this 👑
Why didn't he put the crown on
Incredibly beautiful. Perfection.
🥺 thank you
Can anybody answer this question: is anything in this film - the rituals, the clothing, the mythology, - authentically African, i.e. closely based on any actual African culture?
Yes. This is heavily based on Yoruba culture and mythology.
You need to understand what is meant by the term "Futuristic".
@@uknowamsaying Tell me
@@000aleph It is about an imaginary future.
Not a repeat of what you already know something as from the past.
2nd😂
Ist
NICE LIGHTING, NICE SHOTS, However, the cinematography did not help enhance the story, it feels more like bunch of great B rolls. also set design didnt do well
Thanks. Now take your critique to people who care
And we did not notice in anyway and thoroughly enjoyed it.
So maybe the criticism is quite poor and a purely pathetic attempt to show-off knowledge of the craft.
Not for mediocre you anyways
