I was literally standing in front of these two models 3 weeks ago agonising over which one to get. I decided on the blue SO 44mm and haven’t regretted it. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the captive bezel design on the SO which further legitimises its claim as an authentic diving tool. However, brilliant video!

The previous Superocean had a matte rubber insert, which gives a cool look. Never warmed to the Seamaster...the lines of the dial, hands, the bezel, no taper bracelet. Sure inhouse and great quality, but I prefer the Superocean.

I think materials used should be noted, I think ceramic bezel and dial are really sharp, the helium escape valve, the milled out toolset adjustable clasp, the see through case back the finishing of the 8800, the anti magnetic and silicone hair spring are big pluses to be my seiko got magnetized and have to take it to get fixed. I think the watches vary too much in price to compare thought. I am a big fan of omega obviously but if you want a fun diver Breitling especial at grey market prices can't be beat. I also agree the skeleton hands are very polarizing but that's why I have planet ocean lol.

Well done once again! I, like probably most people that are watching this fantastic video (like all of yours are) went through the very same thought process. I originally bought the SO 44 and felt it was just a bit large for my 7” wrist and then decided to look at alternatives before getting the SO 42. I ultimately ended up getting the SO 42 over many others in the same class due to what you said in the video. Spot on. I would add that I find the AR coating on the SO to be far superior to any of the competitors.
I’d like to also add that your videos for some reason give me the same Warren Miller vib (not sure if you know who that is, but it’s a good thing!). Not sure if anyone’s ever mentioned that.

I have owned both. The Breitling is more of an everyday watch, dull hands, not as blingy. And if you want an everyday watch, the lume on the Breitling is much better, so it wins. Don’t listen to the haters on the Omega bracelet, it is awesome.

Breitling used a rubber coated bezel on some of the older models around 2013. The Breitling also uses the glucydur balance on the higher end 2824-2 for better magnetic resistance. Probably not on par with the Omega but offers some resistance to magnetic fields.

Watch collecting is all very well, but I'm inclined to think that it's more a love of ownership together with the aesthetic and status the watch generates. How can you possibly appreciate and cherish the quality, design and character of any timepiece unless you've worn it long enough for this relationship to develop and mature. I own two watches - a 1960s Cyma watersport and a 1954 9ct gold Omega dress watch - and both have accompanied me and shared my experiences etc, in almost equal measure.
I've been able to fully appreciate their characters in terms of design and reliability and admire the superb workmanship of each as the years have gone by. I believe that more satisfaction is gained through watch ownership if you give your watch its fully allotted time on your wrist, rather than the superficial, ephemeral novelty of forever changing the model and never allowing these remarkable objects of desire enough time to show their true worth.

I have the black model of this watch. After awhile you do get used to it and the bezel becomes easier to use. The trick is gripping and turning it while keeping your thumb around the 8 o'clock and your index finger on the 2 o'clock areas. That is if course, if you're wearing the watch traditionally on your left wrist. I admit, it shouldn't be so complicated though but you do get used to it.

@@N3VURMYND You're right, that seems to work for the new Seamaster. But sadly it doesn't work on the model from two iterations prior (the one from Casino Royale with the aluminum bezel and classic execution of the wave dial). In my view that's the most beautiful version of this watch. It is incomprehensible how such a flaw could persist through 4 iterations of a watch at this level -- maybe its the price to pay for that unique scalloped bezel design.

I like that people are coming around to Breitling again I think more interest in other brands is good for the industry. You get more cool designs and see people enjoy them out in the wild.

If you go with the Nekton SMP I feel like the bezel complaints are fairly negated. Just use the raised markers on the titanium bezel insert as grip for your fingers.

Haha I am guilty of commenting on a previous video that I dive with my watches. :) But even for almost all of us who dive the ridiculous depth specs are useless. A well made 100m ISO compliant divewatch does the trick for recreational scuba diving. 200m is plenty for extra peace of mind. That said while I know this and write this comment I am wearing my 1000m specced Sinn U1 😂. Maybe the new 200m Pelagos FXD is the start of more slimmer divers with reasonable specs? 🤔
Great content, you are my favorite watch youtuber. 👍 I am obsessing over buying the Tutima M2 seven seas thanks to you. 😂

I agree mostly. I have owned the 42 superocean and it’s a great watch. Not that keen on the numbers but the lume is great.
My understanding is that the bezel is harder rubber as it can blemish and mark like it’s predecessor although it’s more durable I think. I never would say it’s steel.

The Superocean used to have a rubberised bezel with raised numerals, now it is DLC (diamond like coating). Two great watches, I own both. But the SMP 300 is just a better watch mostly due to the movement. It is also better finished. I think both are a great for the price too.

The one I'm always lusting after is the Omega although with the white dial, black bezel. I have to admit though at $1000 cheaper the Breitling would tempting as it's a beauty + $1000 would get me a Seiko king turtle too.........
Yea but I've always wanted the Omega so.......

    • @alexannear628
      @alexannear628 3 года назад +1

Just get the King Turtle first and see how you feel. I suspect your diver desires will be more than satisfied by the King Turtle. Punches way above it's weight, beautiful enough to enjoy every time you look down at it, affordable enough to put through the ringer with no worries and robust enough to take the beatings. Plus 200m is way more than enough. To me, that is when the love starts to creep in. After you have had this cheap tool for a few years and there are scratches all over. When you reminisce about the times you smashed it off stuff and travelled with it with no worries, and all the while it keeps on ticking. I highly recommend looking into a Sinn U50 as well. Submarine steel, cheap/reliable sw movement and tough as nails. Cheers and enjoy your watch hunt my friend.

@@jollyrob glad to hear I can help in some way. I am sure you have experience handling higher end pieces yourself too. In my experience, the best tool for the job is usually more expensive. However, when dealing with extremely over engineered tool watches, that is not always the case. And yeah exactly, get the Turtle (or Samurai) and then you have more money for whatever else you want.
I used to have a GMT Master II. It was a great watch and I really loved it. However, something was off. It was too pricey and flashy for me to truly enjoy it. I sold it, and made a rule for myself to built my entire collection staying within the price range of that GMT Master II. I have learned about so many brands that I did not know even existed before and scored some truly beautiful watches for pennies on the dollar because of it. Looking back now, I laugh a bit because the GMT II was actually satisfying my dress watch fix despite it being a tool watch through and through. I replaced that desire with a mid 90's Girard Perregaux at almost 1/10th of retail and my god. The difference in art, finishing and overall beauty compared to many 5 figure watches I have handled is just massive.

I hate the Seamaster’s helium escape valve. I like it because it’s actually a function of being a tool watch but at the same time look at it more for its ‘aesthetics’ since I’m never going to go diving. I suppose we can’t get Omega to adopt the Tudor BB58 approach here and segment a Pelagos vs BB58 market for Omega…

Love the video, as always. I have that very same Seamaster 300. I was shopping it vs. the blue Tudor Pelagos and some of your comments here applied to my decision. The Seamaster’s finishing and shine made it more flexible to me. It has the tool watch bona fides, and that’s what I use it for. But it has the premium look to be more.
Agree with the other owners you spoke to. The bracelet is, at best, inelegant. It’s bulky, looks cheap (though it doesn’t feel it). The clasp is great from a feature and adjustability standpoint, but it’s also a freakin’ tombstone. Just bought that blue silicon strap with a fold-over clasp and it’s massively better.

I wouldn't say that the Bracelet looks cheap. I think it's very well made and I love the finishing. It just feels like it doesn't belong on this particular watch. It just doesn't match the case. I immediately purchased the OEM strap after buying this watch.

    • @Justlaxin13

@@N3VURMYND I’d looking cheap and feeling cheap are two different things here. It feels very sturdy and well done. But I have a friend who wears a Citizen watch he bought at Macy’s (nothing wrong with that!) at arm’s length, that bracelet and the Seamaster one look nearly identical.

FYI, if you're doing water sports like jet skiing or water skiing or anything at speed in the water, you will need 200M of water resistance because water resistance is measured in still water and the motion you make in water creates more pressure. Thus you can be 5-10 feet in water but have the pressure of that of 150m of still water.

Very tempted by the SuperOcean and would ideally buy the bracelet and the rubber strap. My dilemma is that I much prefer the blue face on the bracelet, yet find the blue face/blue strap combo unappealing... Would the blue case look absurd paired with a black strap? The black face looks great on the black strap but, IMO, not so great on the bracelet as the blue. Arrgghh!
