    Remember, AI is like a tool. You can use a hammer to build a house or you can use it to put a hole in your wall. Who is using it and how makes all the difference.

    • @serialtoon
      @serialtoon День назад +2

      Yea but imagine you get to use your hammer for free for 6 months then you have to pay a monthly fee to hammer additional nails after, in perpetuity. That's the part I'm not happy with. In some cases you can hammer some nails "for free" but not all of them. Then you buy next year's hammer and it's only new features is a new kind of nail you can hammer but from a specific brand that also coincides with the hammers brand of nails.

    The AI features you highlighted are the best-case scenarios. I think the problem with the way companies have been marketing their AI products is that they emphasize taking the creative tasks away from people. This is expressed in the current joke that we want AI to do the laundry, not paint a painting.
    The other problem AI has is its trustworthiness. It's still too easy to get AI to spit out an answer to a question that's complete nonsense, and unless you know something about the topic, you won't *know* it's nonsense.
    I've been working a lot with Google's NotebookLM lately. It's *really* easy for the AI to get ahead of its skis and produce summaries of documents that are at least a little bit wrong, if the text it's looking at is large enough.
    And the other thing it suffers from is a bad reputation. It's better now, but it wasn't so long ago it was talking about glue on pizza. I remember it giving me descriptions of phones that didn't exist or quoting outrageous specs for new phones (e.g., 2TB of RAM).
    And more generally, vendors aren't being honest about what the AI can do. Gemini isn't Google Search. It's a chatbot. The fact that people are treating it like Google Search is kind of a failure on Google's part, because there's no way that's going to end well. LLMs look for relationships between words. Their purpose is to give you a response that sounds correct in whatever language you're using. Expecting accurate answers is the wrong use case.

    I do a lot of 3D Printing and design, and I often use Gemini to ask sometimes quite obscure questions, my most recent being "Why does my PETG print keep having horizontal splits in the model, even though I've dried the filament and slowed it down?" and it gives advice on possible causes: I saw one thing that made me go "Oh, yes, it could be that", tried it, and my problem went away. That's a specific example, but I've found that if I have any questions I'll just ask, and even if the answer isn't direct, it pushes me in the right direction. Without it, I'd be delving deep into Reddit, and potentially 100s of forums and vendor websites trying to synthesise an answer for hours, then often decide that it's just too much effort.

    I use Gemini daily. From my experience, the more techy or task oriented queries are pretty good. I asked a very specific question today, _does a 2023 BMW m240 rwd have an open differential_ . It said yes then no in the same answer. The reason I say this is that everybody has something that they're really into and if they're asking Gemini or chatgpt questions and it's giving them random strange answers then it will feel useless. But I think giving it specific tasks to solve problems or make charts or something like that. It's a bit more effective.

    I have found Gemini is better than ChatGPT however both suffer from information misinterpretation the more you get into it. I do find that the more technical inquiries are better than general knowledge - Python vs US history. AI will get better. One item I am concerned, is users being forced or corralled into using specific AIs. Personally I find AIs to be of minimal use. I do see that changing when an AI can be a dependable assistant.

    At first, I think Gemini was having a rough start. Then, I'd say a little around the one month mark that it got a whole lot better. There will be people who talk about AI hallucinations. I'd say that's pretty much ancient history now. Anyway, people won't take my word for it. So, when you do a Google search and come up empty, try asking Gemini and then tell me AI is worthless. Yes, I would have preferred doing a Google search but if Gemini comes up with something real then I'm a happy camper. And Gemini has kept me pretty happy.

    The day AI was released, a lot of people took that to mean, this is ‘the’ one time release. The grasp that this is/was an ongoing thing. The thing you could not do on day 1 , most likely you could do by 1 month. Reading posts by followers, it becomes obvious, really obvious, that some people are one and done. Progressive development doesn’t work for them. You can not ignore these. I used to only laugh. Now i only shake my head. Setting an alarm or reminder is a day 1 issue. By day 30 you could. 🤷🏼
    Whether you’re talking Google, Microsoft or Apple, yours is the reality. The companies are just the flavor.

    The question is to what extent people are rejecting the AI as such and to what extent they are tired with the constant promotion of it as the best thing that could happen to us... But with improving interfaces and ability to speak naturally, people will find out that it is helpful - although still I am not convinced it is the best thing for the mankind to outsource thinking and learning to machines...

    • @shanecraigtech
      @shanecraigtech  10 часов назад

      I honestly think that the primary problem has been the marketing, not the actual products. I think people are watching as hardware stagnates and they feel like they are hearing about these AI features as almost an excuse for that. While I'm not entirely sure that's exactly what's happening, that is certainly the perception.
      For the latter point, the augmentation of human capability has been a long slow process. Still, I think it's worth considering if there's a tipping point where it begins to do more harm than good. I would just say that it's only worth considering and as a curiosity or a thought exercise, because whether any of us like it or not, the train will keep running down the track. It's just where we're headed and there's very little any of us can do about it.

    But then my own experience using Gemini app (so more related to the first part of your video) just this week - I've tried to get it to do 30 tasks, mainly summarising specific pdfs, and it's failed over 20 times and hallucinated EVERY single other time. I constantly have to say "that's not right" followed by it grovellingly agreeing with me, then getting it wrong again immediately.
    Then I use lens to ID a sound bar for a family member and it gets it entirely wrong.
    I try and add a calendar event from gemini in gmail and it fails, as does "look at screen" or whatever its called. Then i hit screenshot and the same damn app says "oh, want me to add this to your calendar?".
    I just cannot work out why my own experiences trying to give it even small tasks is SO much worse than other people's.

      This seems like a Samsung specific issue. If your claim is that they've not improved their battery tech because they're focusing on AI tools, that's something you'd need to support. I see correlation, not causation. Samsung also hasn't started charging for anything and we have no idea what will require a subscription.

    Think it depends, majority of usecases aren't necessary for most people. It is for sure useful for certain things, circle to search is pretty awesome ... but then stuff like the photo editing stuff is really bad in 90% of cases (even your example you can tell that the photo with the dog it was enhanced), the worst one imo is the sketch feature from Samsung. Or on the other side, Apple`s notification summary is absolutely horrible, so their utility greatly varies.
    And so far none of them have been proven to be a hit, Microsoft's Copilot stuff is the only one we know that they have leaked results on their usage and the majority of people just don't use it.
    Think the main issue people have with them is that most aren't super thought through and seems they are just throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks.

      @shanecraigtech not saying it's not ok, especially for social media(compression hides any issue pretty well), here there were issues a bit around the ear and can see that something is a bit weird with the top of the picture. And from what I've played with, both Samsung's and Google's AI photo editing tool do have some marks that if people are looking for can see them.
      btw.... not saying you're wrong, AI is here to stay and can be useful, what I'm trying to say is that it's a bit overhyped and has limitations, that most companies are trying to market away and make it seem like it can do everything.
