One of the best albums of the 10s. Every track just hits in a way no other album does. Also Ain’t it funny is one of the greatest songs of all time.

This was the album that totally changed my perspective on hip hop back in 2016. I listened to some artists, but Danny led me down the rabbit hole with this brutally atmospheric and creative album. Nothing will ever sound like it, masterpiece.

I love the closer because it answers a question that gets more and more pressing with each song. A question that causes a lot of people to close their ears and minds to rap. The question being “Why are we listening to and encouraging music that goes to such great length and detail to describe a hellacious lifestyle of drugs, alcohol, depression… aka hell.?” It was a question I was asking with each song leading up to the closer. All the songs were impressive performances and production feats but I didn’t see the value in the constant glorification and emphasis on this Atrocity of a life. Aka Atrocity Exhibition. The following lines in the final song explain the whole album and the reason for it “ So my task is inspire your future with my past
I lived through that shit, so you don’t have to go through it”. Boom. That’s it. That’s what it’s all about. Telling your story and carrying the burden of your mistakes for the sake of others. Incredible close to an incredible album

I had planned on going through this channel chronologically, but I had to jump ahead to this one. I can’t really pinpoint an exact time, but over the second half of 2016 I became addicted to pain pills i.e. opioids; oxycodone mostly - of course, I wouldn’t truly realize I had a problem until a few months later, roughly February 2017, which to make a long story short was when I first bought heroin (although thankfully I’m terrified of needles and thus never went down the road of IV use). Anyway, my point is simply this: Danny Brown in general and Atrocity Exhibition in particular was quite literally the soundtrack to my addiction. One thing I can say for sure is that I definitely wouldn’t have believed then that both Danny and myself would be alive and healthy (relatively, at least) in 2023 - although as I say that I’m reminded that both Juice WRLD and Mac Miller were in a similar place around that time and neither of them are here anymore.

@@putyouondawg please show your dad the music videos for Pneumonia and Ain’t It Funny. Even if you just show them to him on your own time, not for a video. I think he’d think they are masterpieces.
