    Jamin's proposed SXSW panel is "No Instructions: Leveraging the Power of Play". Vote for it before 9/4!vid.io/xqCI
    Rocket League! The addicting genre mash-up game, and sequel to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars (SARPBC), that has sold over 1 million copies via Steam just this summer alone. But how exactly can such an innovative and transformative game be defined? On this week's episode of Game/Show, Jamin explores the divergence approach Rocket League has taken while classifying its genre. From soccer to racing and demolition - Rocket League has taken only the enjoyable parts of games, freeing it to become a game that's all about "finding the fun". Check it out!

      +PBS Game/Show I really liked the broken off comments, because with last weeks comments at the end of this weeks episode, I am now about to be discussing watching DOTA in the comments section about Rocket League.
      Moving on...
      Learning how to watch a game: One bit of advice that I picked up in relation to real world traditional sports, the best way to learn how to appreciate a televised baseball game is to mute it, and turn on a radio broadcast of the game. Radio play-by-play announcers learn how to convey the what is going on, and often why it is going on, in a way that TV announcers never do, due to the obvious reasoning that they know their audience cannot see the game. E-Sports play-by-play announcers come from there an era and culture where the video content is perceived as the primary one, they spend less time speaking to their audience about what and why things are happening in-game. But also, DOTA is just simply more complex than baseball and does need a certain amount of hands on experience to understand just what that glow means.

      I like the idea of a separate video for comments as well. It does make the comments section less messy and less annoying. Rather than scrolling through this weeks and last weeks comments, it is neatly organized into whatever is relevant to the video uploaded.
      Makes me think I should have filled out the survey. Though, I mostly don't because it would be more like an outsider's view. I will admit it, I do often feel like an outsider when watching your videos, but it's not as alienating as certain other video uploaders. Not exactly welcoming for me, but not exactly alienating either.

    • @MonkeyPantsFace
      @MonkeyPantsFace 9 лет назад +1

      +PBS Game/Show I know that survey people aren't that keen for separate videos, but what if we pulled a half measure? Maybe like have a brief comment response to one comment on the end of the video with a link to go watch the full video somewhere else. That would be cool; not sure how hard it would be to implement, but cool :)

    I was trying to describe to my dad what made Rocket League feel like a really special sports game and you've landed somewhere close to where I landed. It's the first one I've seen, not that I'm an expert, where players are put into that perspective (on the field, not overhead), with those flexible controls (it's all about positioning, not hitting a button when you want to shoot or pass), with teammates (FIFA has never felt like soccer to me - how can it when one person controls a whole team?). It's the first esport that feels emotionally like a RL sport to me.
    I actually do want a tv mode for spectating Rocket League. I watched a tournament and the casters seemed to have a hard time picking a player who is involved in a play or has a good view of the play - which makes sense, since play is so quick and players change position so often. A raised up, sideline, halfway camera would be a great baseline (I think!) from which casters could jump into and back out of individual player views.

    To me, Rocket League is a non-stop highlight reel of a real soccer game. If you take the 100ish minutes of a soccer match and condensed it down to all the amazing plays you'd get five minutes of insanity that would be kind of like Rocket League.
    P.S. I really liked the separate comments too... but also wouldn't mind seeing 15-20 minute (or longer) videos... your move Jamin.

    The best part about Rocket League is that it's competitive, but also incredibly accessible. When watching someone play it, even if you've never played it yourself, you almost always know exactly what's going on. It may not be an esport, but I think real esports like DOTA or League could learn a lot from Rocket League.

  • @0num4

    One of the finer points in Rocket League comes from the fact that no matter how veteran or newbie you are, all players' cars perform exactly the same. You can decorate your paint and choose any hats or chassis, but your performance will remain unchanged. No min/maxing to worry about, no leveling up to have the strongest metagame.
    Just jump in and play -- let the skill and/or luck of the players on the field be the determining factor.

    • @porgy29
      @porgy29 9 лет назад +3

      +〈-thatguyoverthere As a better explanation I think it comes down to game design. When I see Rocket league it looks fun, but all of the footage I've seen of blast ball looks dull. Where rocket league is fast and frenetic blast ball looked more sluggish. When a car flies through the air and hits the ball and sends it flying that is very direct and visceral. But I haven't seen any footage of blast ball where your shots have that same impact. Instead of kicking a soccer ball around at mach speed it looks like moving a beach-ball with a suppersoaker.
      And yes their is some additional disappointment mixed in. Nintendo fans have been wanting some more love for there non Mario IP's since the WiiU launched but keep getting games that feel like spin-offs. Factor in that blast ball is just a game mode on a phisical game and as such is going to cost much more than Rocket League does.

    Like most games, depth is what really defines the experience.
    Extra Credits did an episode on depth vs. complexity and explained that their ideal game had a lot of depth with very little complexity. Rocket League embodies this idea fantastically by offering a huge amount of depth but one simple concept, allowing the player to just pick up and play the game. Its easy, its fast and there is as much depth to the gameplay as the player would like.
    Rocket League = good example of depth in videogames

    This bricolage style of game design makes me think of Crypt of the Necrodancer in a way. The creator of Crypt, I don't think had the intention to go into the game with a bricolage style in mind, I saw an interview where he specifically wanted to make a turn-based dungeon crawler that had a much shorter time between turns, but he noticed as he started to make them shorter and shorter, they started to feel as if he was marching to a beat. So he decided to embrace it and turn Crypt into a Roguelike/Rhythm game combo.
    ...Also an episode on Crypt of the Necrodancer would be incredible pretty please~

    I think it's interesting that you brought up the idea of "finding the fun", since it also relates to the increased acceptability, nay, outright support of game modding nowadays (e.g. the newest Source engine and Garry's-Mod). Games are not seen as a monolithic piece if work anymore, but rather a platform on which users can look for/add what they find interesting.
    This also relates to the trend of pre-release-update cycle of game devs, especially for smaller studios. The ease of gathering and analyzing mass data from pre-release play tests allows the experience to constantly be fine-tuned, thus "finding the fun" for the players. I'd imagine that this also allows for more flexible dev schedules too, and that each update creates a brief burst of hype and replayability.

    I was noting on Forza Horizon 2 that the game flatters me, cutting corners that should put the g force on the wrong side which should make acceleration recovery harder, but instead it becomes an excellent over taking position where you go faster. I look great, I feel great - what's important is the same as in books, films and TV and that is the suspension of disbelief. Rocket league has suspension in spades, and it becomes great entertainment to play and to watch. It's my game of 2015 so far, just edging out Elite Dangerous.

    I mostly agree with you, except the bricolage part. As you yourself said a bricolage is chaotic and consists of seemingly unrelated things. While soccer/football are mostly unrelated rocket league was designed in such a way that it appears like it is something ordinary (all the futuristic and funny aspects aside). In my opinion, it is composed of many elements, but they are in harmony and it does not seem chaotic at all.

    You forgot to mention that Psyonix are freaking geniuses at this. They practically beta tested this as Supersonic Rocket Powered Acrobatic Battle Cars back in 07 or something... plus they made Nosgoth, another battle/arena based game... even though it is fps and not as popular, I reckon that (ongoing) experience in these types of games helped them a lot too.

    I couldn't help but see that at 2:47 you describe Fifa Street's freestyling as a failed mode. I take issue with this, having played the game for hours on end in single player with my created team, starring my digital self. I felt so much part of the sport there and then that it sparked a interest in football - a sport I'd disregarded for years - that has been carried with me to this day.
    Apart from that slight problem it was, as always, a very good episode.

    I would put Splatoon up as an example of bricologe in gaming. Here we have a mixture of Nintendo's kid friendly aesthetic and the world of competitive online shooters including GoW and CoD. Splatoon sits in the middle of a Ven Diagram of these two very different overlapping areas: Splatoon cartoony visuals are worlds away from the stark and violent worlds of other shooters, but there is actually a deceptively large amount of depth and metagame when it comes to the mechanics, something not commonly found in your typical kids game. It's crazy uniqueness is a big part it has made such a "splash".
    I'll show myself out now.

    Enjoyed the video, but i wanted to see some completed plays/goals. It seemed that the video would be cut in weird areas, showing more boring sections of gameplay more often than not. Though the sheer combination of the things as you described is a big part of why Rocket League is great, I think also the spot on controls and timing and FEEDBACK play a huge role in making this game feel right and be success. Heck, that article on Gamasutra could've cited your video on Mario's jump and it would've directly related.

    an interesting thing to me is that Rocket League and Blaster Ball are very similar concepts for a game, but everyone was very critical of Blaster Ball after only seeing a small amount of it, and soon after, the gaming world was taken by storm by Rocket League. i have to wonder why this is, both look to be very fun games to me, could it be that Nintendo is just being held to an unrealistically high standard?

    A few other games that use bricolage are Sequence and 10000000. These games are normal but somewhat streamlined RPGs. The only difference is that combat is replaced with an entirely different genre (rhythm in Sequence and connect-3 in 10000000). I'm not a huge fan of RPGs but these games made me want to play more of them. Adding a familiar element eased me into the RPG genre.
    I also want to draw attention to the "actual sports" clip since I only comment when you mention quidditch.

    The thing I'm most curious about is why everyone seems to be playing rocket league but almost no one played supersonic acrobatic rocket powered battle cars. +MEver316 Firstly there was a lot less customisation but I do agree with the maps being very samey. Luckily it looks like maps will be coming out a lot more often. As for your first point I think it's due to a couple things. I think one of the strange thing about rocket league is how a lot of people seem to forget that car soccer is an actual real sport, yes it's not a particularly engaging one, but it is a basis. what rocket league does more that 'collage' genres together is that it, as you said, takes them to a logical extreme. it's a thing developers are afraid to do with sports games, because of concrete brands like madden and fifa, the niche is 'filled' and making a game in that sport is often seen as a 'stupid move' I mean just look at outlier 'backbreaker' which was a fantastic gridiron football game, but didn't see a squeal because of course, how could it compete with the yearly madden. maybe rocket league will make indie devs more comfortable in trying making sports games, with weird new twists and interesting mechanics, which in turn will let tripple A developers know that big names like fifa and madden don't have a monopoly on a sport, they just have the base sport covered. in the future I'd love to see more tactics based or RPG type sports games or ones with interesting takes on the sport, maybe we can put jetpacks in rugby.

    I am sure this has come up already, but did anyone play Excite Bike 64 the Soccer multiplayer game mode? I haven't played Rocket league but I feel Excite Bike 64 (for the nintendo 64) was way ahead of it's time and rocket league is just the same thing?

    Has game show done an episode on This War of Mine? I don't recall. In any case, if not, it seems like something ripe for Game Show.

    This is what keeps me from trying this game. It seems as if it is really hard to score because it is hard to control the ball. Also a huge number of the goals would be based on luck :/

    • @MrBayren
      @MrBayren 9 лет назад

      +32lizOtuseM At first it is hard to feel like you're being effective because you don't know the feel of the cars and gravity and how to hit to ball properly. Despite this it's still amazingly fun to play and you'll find the learning curve is quick. Also while luck can play a part, a million times over will skill help you win more than luck will.

    You know what I don't get? Why is it that people give Rocket League non-stop praise while at the same time start petitions to get Metroid Prime: Federation Force/Blast Ball canceled? They're the same concept, just different genres (Blast Ball is an FPS instead of driving).

  • @smegskull
    @smegskull 9 лет назад

    I don't get why it took off but supersonic battle cars didn't. They are identical games with identical mechanics. If anything rocket league is a lesser game than its predecessor (it is a direct sequel according to the devs) as it contains only one map/pitch.
    Psychologically this makes no sense to me why are the 2 games not equally loved? Is it just because of the PS3 exclusivity of the original not having a US audience?

    • @spicybluemustard
      @spicybluemustard 9 лет назад +1

      +smegskull It's hard to say, but I think there are a number of factors. The original SARPBC was faster than Rocket League... I'm not sure how much they actually changed (other than speed), but the physics in Rocket League just feel right (after a few games). Rocket League also has dedicated servers (which did cause issues in the beginning when the game was way more popular than expected, but was quickly fixed). With SARPBC you were more likely to get a laggy connection, which just makes the game terrible for everyone.
      I also think timing - releasing during summer when there are relatively fewer AAA games coming out helped it take off. Also, the much more dominate let's play community gives these games a lot more publicity than SARPBC could ever get.
      As far as being a lesser game... that is true, but I do think / hope Psyonix will continue to add free maps that will be different than the current map. I don't know, but I think part of their strategy was to keep it simple to create a community around the basic gameplay before offering more and more options (but that's pure speculation).

    it is strange that the videogame medium defign the core mechanic as the genera of the game as opposed to the traditional literary genera. having a sports/ racing/ ect simulater is one thing but calling something by its main mechanic does not really cover all of what the game is about. many mechanics can be blended to form a diffrent type of game yet can still be placed under its core mechanic. for example destiny compared to halo, both are fps games but destiny falls more into the rpg catigory while halo falls in to the staged levels set up. when you go into pvp it forms into more of a moba.

  • @MondayIsBongoDay
    @MondayIsBongoDay 9 лет назад

    sorry to nitpick here, it's just this show is usually so perfect that i feel like i need to point this out. saying that sports games have become 'a little bit stale, to be honest' is sort of a subjective statement i think? like i don't particularly enjoy sport games, but surely this could have been expressed better? devaluing traditional sports games is not necessary to affirm the genius of rocket league.

    • @pbsgameshow
      @pbsgameshow  9 лет назад

      +Philip F. Nylander Not mutually exclusive! But as I mentioned in the episode, it's become a real challenge for sports game to toe the line between realism and playability. Feature creep is definitely an issue year over year.

    • @MondayIsBongoDay
      @MondayIsBongoDay 9 лет назад

      yes, i totally agree! i just feel like the statement that sports games have become "a little bit stale, to be honest" sort of ignores the gamers that still enjoy them, even if they only refine the exact same concept year after year. like, art does not need to constantly be revolutionary to not be considered "stale"?

    • @MondayIsBongoDay
      @MondayIsBongoDay 9 лет назад

      to be clear, i don't disagree with your point. i just think that the particular statement i've pointed out is not exactly correct.

  • @ChaingunCassidy
    @ChaingunCassidy 9 лет назад

    Some friends and I have picked this up and have really taken to it, one's a big motorsports fan and I'm a football (Soccer) fan and the others are hardcore gamers and it combines our interests perfectly, I'll focus on the racing fan and I because I think it pertains to this more.
    My friend can maneuver his car with moves I can't even dream of because of his experience with racing games and I, having a great knowledge of football, know what it takes to make a goal, I know where the ball should go, where I should be on the pitch and just where to put the ball and I find that we're a great team when we get together because of this previous knowledge and honestly, this game has brought us that much closer because of it because it's an experience we can both share and be good at in different ways.
    If the inventors of bricolage could hear that I'm sure they'd be very happy because I'm sure bringing people closer together based of combining diverse interests is what they were going for.
    More of this philosophy is needed in gaming.
