Being a TA is equivalent to taking TWO COURSES!? Wow

Hi Jon! Tysm for your videos!! Just a quick question, I’m a junior at Berkeley rn, but I’ve never seen undergrad TAs. Are they different from GSIs? I’ve always thought TAs/GSIs are only positions for PhD students. Thanks a lot!!

Glad you liked the video! It might vary from department to department, but in EE, we do have quite a few undergrad TAs. They are basically GSIs, and I don't see any obvious differences in their role aside from being undergrad vs grad, except maybe the pay.

How much will TAing help you in getting into a PhD program? Would you say there's more weight to it than say, GRE score? GPA?

Hmm, I think it depends on the school and the person reading your application. If you ask my opinion, TAing probably is more important than your GRE score, but often has less weight than your GPA, unless of course, you rewrite the course or do something super impactful during your TA tenure that the prof notices.

@@bonchonjonjon Do you always need to TA during your PhD? What about in cases, say you're PhD is securely funded and no TAing necessary -- how is the pre-PhD TA experience help you (if it does)? After all, the admission committee is looking at your research abilities not teaching abilities, right? Or do you think they somehow infer research abilities from TA abilities?

@@iranjackheelson It depends on the program, some schools and departments don't require you to TAing. TAing as an undergraduate can in some cases help, for instance, if you demonstrate good problem solving ability to the professor you work with.
