Nassau County PD personnel evacuate a critically injured patient from car accident scene using one of the aviation unit's Bell 429s. Medevacs account for 10% of the NCPD Av Unit missions.
Nassau County is a suburban area on Long Island NY with a population of around 1.3 million persons. It's located immediately east of New York City. The Nassau County PD Aviation Unit provides airborne law enforcement and rescue.
Nassau County Police Aviation Unit is the last remaining flying operation in Nassau Co and is located on the former site of the Grumman factory at the Grumman Airport.
Originally home to the Mitchel Air Force Base, this airport together with nearby Roosevelt Field and other airfields on the Hempstead Plains, was an area where many historic flights were made including the launching point for Charles Lindbergh's historic solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927.
In fact, so many seminal flights occurred in the area that by the mid-1920s the cluster of airfields was already dubbed the "Cradle of Aviation." Grumman built many of its famous WW II fighter aircraft here at the "Iron Works" including the Hellcat, Wildcat, Tomcat, Intruders and Hawkeyes. Now only the Nassau Co PD's Bell 407's remain.
Nassau PD provides police patrol services to most of the county with the exception of some villages that maintain their own police departments. However, all specialized law enforcement services such as detectives, crime scene unit and airborne law enforcement are provided by the Nassau County Police Department.
