They need to grow a backbone and get out of their jammies and back in the classroom..... They're vaccinated, and they can wear a tyvek suit and as many masks as they so choose if they're that afraid......I'm sure it would be much cheaper to purchase each teacher a full biohazard suit, than it would to continue "virtual learning" or masking and testing students. Not to mention the irreversible physical, emotional and psychological damage that's continuing to be done to this generation of children, adolescences, teens, etc that will have lasting affects for an undetermined amount of time......No one will know the actual damage done for years to come...
Teachers are parents too. They want to protect their families just like other parents. The blaming the teachers is why they are walking out. You, Lori Lightfoot, are not acting in good faith
I think the parents and the mayor need to realize that these are teachers NOT babysitters. These teachers want a safe work place just like all the parents do at their jobs. This push do get people back to work no matter what is another symptom of capitalism in decline
IKR? The very same people accusing everyone else of being "commie" over masks, believe they are entitled to a job and free day care - ie teachers. SMDH
@Marie Smith I’m actually commenting on the OP who noticed how one sided this episode was regarding Chicago teachers. Not saying anyone is controlled, just backing the OP up and acknowledging their view. Sorry if you took it any other way. I also acknowledge the media at large is very good at this, which is also relative to OP.
@Marie Smith completely agreed on all counts. Also, this show does a great job of getting many important people on and I want to see/hear what they have to say.
I feel that way all the time. It is as if Abbott and Costello are running the country. Who's on first, what's on second, I don't know is on third and why is in the outfield.
Teachers are essential and some of the most disrespected and disregarded. Create safer environments, protocols and policies, show some concern. Yes, students are important. Yes, families need support. However, teachers are people too, teachers have families too. We all know that covid tracking is not what it should be, sanitation is not what it should be, everyone is not following safety guidelines, with school doors are open, families will send kids sick or not, and teachers will not have the support of administration.
I agree. I also understand what the Mayor was saying. I used to be friends w a teacher & she used her union in really antagonistic ways that were simple power plays, rather than simply work w getting things resolved. Dont know if thats universal... Im just also flustered that we cant just get kids to mask. Its ridiculous that its an issue at all, let alone relative to kids. Its Fascist techniques that have created this insanity about not doing common sense things. Its so illogical. There are elements in reality that remind me of the Monte Python Movie "Life of Bryon"...
So well said, same goes for all essential front line workers like hospital workers, which some have Unions also. Hazard pay may motivate along with Biden allocations of improving air circulatory systems. Wonder how much of that Cares/Rescue money actually reached school districts in Red Governing states?
Also teachers aren’t soldiers. They can walk out and “abandon post” if they feel their conditions aren’t being met. It’s utterly dehumanizing to treat our educator with such callous disregard. Either pay the teacher more or pay the parents to stay home. But you can’t tell people they have to be in a work environment they don’t feel safe in.
If the teachers are afraid to have in school classes, then maybe the school district should do everything in its power to ensure they are working in a safe environment. It's that simple. Make in class teaching SAFER.
You're right. The states do have a duty to provide a safe working environment and accommodations, but we're going on year two of the pandemic. You'd think they would have found a system that keeps kids in school without making schools a hazard to people venerable to severe Covid-19 complications.
Some People are convinced that working a dead end job is more respectful than staying home with the kids! Not realizing that the time spent away from the house, leaves unattended children! Staying home Should be just as important as a job! When both parents had to start working, that's when things started falling apart! It Should Not be this way! We Should have a "Basic Income' for People who have children and can't afford to work outside of the home!! It's a Full Time Job! No matter what People think! It's The Most Important Job! Stuff Happens in life! That's the way it is. We Need to value the role of Homemaker a lot More!

Just last week at my wife’s school, there were 5 new cases of staff being infected with COVID. They already had shortages of staff and teachers. She doesn’t feel safe I think they should go back to remote learning for at least 2 weeks. Btw my sister and her children tested positive 3 days ago. She thinks her kids got it from school. Covid infections are crazy high.
Five people including two kids in my child’s class have Covid and they still force our child to go to school. But I will tell you this that if my son gets Covid from school and he dons so will everybody else who is responsible for my son‘s death or that I’ve you responsible, I don’t really care. People don’t seem to understand, that you can still love your child while being poor, but your Child can’t love you back when he’s dead because you force him into school and use them as a daycare just so you can go out and make a buck. Just so you can buy your crack and your liquor and your cigarettes and your gambling and partying. And all the other bad habits that people have that they don’t realize their hurting families and others around them.
I'm at a private nursery school (my room is unvaccinated). Last week we had two of our nine classrooms shut down and move to Zoom class because of Covid exposure. Every class but one had some sort of Covid exposure. I had 4 of my 15 students left by weeks end and lost one of our three teachers out due to her daughter having to quarantine with symptoms. So, now, in my class, we have 2 teachers taking care of 4 kids in person and one teacher teaching 11 via Zoom. If next week continues like last week, we'll be doing Zoom. But we could have done Zoom last week without exposing almost 150 kids to Covid. At least give it a couple weeks to see what the effects of Omicron are instead of finding what the effects are on us.
They don't care about people catching it, the corporations own the government and have decided to let it burn through the general population. It is not about the kids or teachers, it's really about the parents. If the parents catch it they will be out if work which hurts profits,.I know it's ignorant as the parents will also catch it anyway but humans never think long term when it comes to profits, it's always about today.
@@jeris33 Not sure what you are trying to say and any correlation to flat earth insanity. The very people who are saying we need to be remote are the teachers. They are not willing to be guinea pigs just to keep profits increased, imagine that.
Anyone who didn't think corporations would willfully misinterpret cdc guidelines to force people back to work sooner than intended is being willfully ignorant themselves, and probably shouldn't be on TV if they are that woefully nieve
It's the corporations who had the government lower the standards in the first place. We are corporate controlled, which is to say the wealthy bought all the politicians long ago. All the news outlets except for some progressive ones are nothing but PR businesses for right and left wing corporate interests designed to spew propaganda out.
Corps don't want people back at work.. if corps can keep people out of work another 6 months..it'd probably destroy the remaining medium and small businesses
Footnote: I'm pro vax but not mandates. I AM, however, a firm believer in masking, especially while in a crowded store, two feet from a person who needs THEIR job (just as much as those small business owners we kept hearing about in the beginning of this pandemic, did.) If people had only worn those GD masks, even if just while in our faces, it would NOT be like this now. Now, because people cared only about their "rights," they (and others) are waiting an hour just to buy a pack of gum, and those employees who are out sick get to try to pay doctor and hospital bills on a Walmart paycheck. Our latest slogan? "Happy to Help." Yeah. Just know that in the back of our minds, we are thinking that all unmasked customers need to get in the back of the lines and all those who wore and wear masks can get checked out first. ;)

Omg Chuck Todd just sits there while the mayor says the safest place for kids is in school while we're in the midst of THE WORST OUTBREAK since this pandemic began. Utter incompetence. This is shameful behavior from both the media and the politicians!
Kids home alone for 8 to 10 hours a day with no food is not safe. Look, I get it. They should be tested and vaccinated. But learning is much easier in a classroom. Not every kid is safe at home in her district. The underlying social and economic problems haven't been fixed. Child care and health/mental/elder care need to be addressed. Single parents have to work and they often can't afford childcare. Kids aren't always safer at home.

After the school year started, our two school-age kids got sick (non-covid) once or twice. I got them tested, and we kept them home from school while sick and/or waiting for test results. I left recorded messages on the school absence line. The school never bothered to contact us back to ask any questions, to inform us what the rules were, or to thank us for doing the right thing. Later my wife and all three of our children caught actual covid (confirmed by testing) from my wife's older daughter. Again we got the family tested, again we kept the kids home. We did get a couple brief calls from the local health department, but again never a word from the school. No questions about timing or contacts or anything. No thanks. No advice. No active coordination about the kids' schoolwork. Everything is left up to us... our judgement, our initiative.

The school has less than 300 students. My other child attends a vocational school. His school nurse sent out an email saying that they will no longer be doing contact tracing. They want us to do it ourselves. So if my kid gets sick, am I supposed to contact students in his classes or that he has lunch with, who I don't know and don't have contact info for? Yes, apparently that's what they think we'll be able to do. The nurse said that there were too many cases for the school to keep track of themselves. That's because last I heard, my state has a 20% infection rate. I wonder what they're doing in the states that are worse off than us?! Don't even get me started on the CDC changing their guidelines to 5 days! This conveniently happened after big business complained about how long the quarentine/isolation was for covid. They openly said that 25% is the state's cutoff for funding for each school day... in other words, even then it was only a matter of the schools not receiving state money, no thought about overloading hospitals or killing off local nursing home residents.
@@Fuzzybeanerizer So what's your percentage now? 2 years and two different presidents and nothing has changed since the beginning of this pandemic . i refuse to agree with America the greatest country
Here's a question that I'd like to ask you all as a non-American observer outside of America. Perhaps America is expecting too much because it doesn't realize how perilous the situation is. Nobody wants to consider that we; ..and I mean humanity might be over our heads. People are mad at the scientists and the politicians because life is very inconvenient and we're "losing money". They expect the scientific community to have all the answers and the politicians to fix this as if they're hired to fix our patchy lawns. This was a BRAND NEW virus (it still is in the grand scheme of things!) Omicron could have been like Ebola, but we were lucky. We can STILL get an "Ebola" as we're by no means out of the woods! I don't think this is something that any human alone can fix. The POTUS can only act within a system. A system takes years to fix if it doesn't work. No Republican, Democrat, or Independent can fix Covid alone. The sooner Americans realize this and stop blaming an individual expecting a miracle-worker, the sooner they can start supporting and working together and with the world to prepare for and survive this powerful challenge. This challenge is not America's alone. Look at other countries. Look at China who was the best at managing this virus. They're having outbreaks too now! So Omicron is a real challenge. Be easier on America and start supporting those who are trying to manage this and realize how hard this is for the scientific community still learning about this changing virus. They are building the airplane while flying it with the weather conditions constantly changing. Don't be whiney passengers. There will be turbulence. You need to put on your "seatbelts" when the sign is lit even if it was just a precaution. You should cooperate and be thankful you're still flying. America needs to be kinder to itself. Nobody would be so angry if they knew the danger we are all in.

My question to the Mayor of Chicago is, why is it ok for unvaccinated children to go to school for 8 hours in a day but unvaccinated people cannot eat in a restaurant for an hour?
I work for a school system in Indiana. I do not blame the Chicago teachers at all. People are scared. I am constantly having to tell PARENTS to put on a mask before they even enter the building. Even though we have enormous signs on the doors that say they are required! And you have parents who are refusing to vaccinate, and they are sending their kids to school putting everyone they come into contact with at risk! I even have to tell some staff to put on a mask! @@alisongreen7576 I wish that I knew the answer to get everyone to listen. Our school is open and in session. For the most part, most of the staff abides by the new rules that we have to live by. All it takes is one person to be positive and spread it around though.
@@bhumphries1360 True- but I think teachers now are like medical staff- they are essential workers- not just because kids to be socialised and educated but also so parents are free to go to work themselves. So teachers should get vaccinated and boosted and wear masks if that's the rule in their area or if they want to, and then just accept that there will be still be a risk- or we will never get everything restarted. I think we all just have to accept that a proportion of people have been radicalised and will not be reasonable and we just have to ignore them and protect ourselves as best we can. As more of them die, more will see reality and get vaccinated- or they will get infected and either die or recover and have immunity that way. Will they infect some vaccinated or vulnerable people and make some of them die unnecessarily? Yep- but we can't lock them all up and it's a waste of time and energy to argue any more. Never asked me any questions, never contact traced me.... Nothing... I have no access to testing weekly for my job... (I am not saying mandate, but I should have a choice too with available access)
First, it sounds like you have a problem on the local maybe school board level. It is dangerous and irresponsible not to inform teachers that someone in their class has tested positive. It jeopardizes the entire school's safety and guarantees transmittal of the virus onto unsuspecting vulnerable people.

After doing everything that we're supposed to do since 3/2020, I like most, like you, are just disgusted! Hope your family is on the way to recovering from covid.
@@marywood8794 We actually took advantage of Michigan's "schools of choice" laws last fall to move our kids to what we considered to be a more responsible school district. The district we live in announced last August that they would not be calling off school under any circumstance until 25% of the kids were actually staying home with covid. They openly said that 25% is the state's cutoff for funding for each school day... in other words, even then it was only a matter of the schools not receiving state money, no thought about overloading hospitals or killing off local nursing home residents.
@@Fuzzybeanerizer So what's your percentage now? Here we literally had kids walking out of schools in Boston protesting not being able to go remote, at least temporarily, while there were too many sick kids and staff. Last week there were 1000 staff out sick in the Boston schools. The week before there were 500 substitute teachers lined up. The second day back from school vacation, there weren't enough substitutes to cover the absent teachers. The superintendent of schools was teaching an elementary school class! Still Governor Baker won't change his mind even until this surge is over. Of course, he can do as he likes, because he has decided not to run for re-election! This is the first time that I've completely disagreed with him during this covid mess. Previously, if he took a stance and then something changed, like not enough healthy teachers to run the schools, he would reconsider his decision and change it.
The unvaccinated and unmasked are the culprits!
Lori Lightfoot: your disdain, disrespect and lack of support for teachers is disgusting. Your condescension for the profession is awful. Help teachers stay safe during Covid. And quit treating them like your hired help. It's that simple.
These people are so out of touch with real Americans.

It's pretty obvious that the shots are the problem.
So many people triple vaccinated still getting it, and more than once.
Everyone needs to get the vaccine. We all want to feel safe and stay alive.

2 years and two different presidents and nothing has changed since the beginning of this pandemic . i refuse to agree with America the greatest country
You're goofy, many things have changed, for one thing the honorable President Biden isn't in denial!
I just told a friend that both parties a going down. Its the top 1 percenters who have manufactured this whole thing worldwide. They know what is going on. My question to the Mayor of Chicago is, why is it ok for unvaccinated children to go to school for 8 hours in a day but unvaccinated people cannot eat in a restaurant for an hour?
The sh*t is hitting the fan when Lori Lightfoot is creatively criticizing the teacher's union.
She's openly criticizing people for wanting to stay safe. She's cooked 🍳
Yeah, I thought "wait, isn't she a democrat?"
Enough is enough
I work for a school system in Indiana. I do not blame the Chicago teachers at all. People are scared. I am constantly having to tell PARENTS to put on a mask before they even enter the building. Even though we have enormous signs on the doors that say they are required! And you have parents who are refusing to vaccinate, and they are sending their kids to school putting everyone they come into contact with at risk! I even have to tell some staff to put on a mask! The biggest mistake our country made was politicizing this pandemic. And we can thank the Republican Party and their leadership for this! Mayor Lightfoot says she trusts the science. Well, the science and hospitalizations say otherwise!
But you are saying that staff are not united in following the rules- so how can you get the message to kids and parents?
Long term I think home schooling should be illegal except for a few children in exceptional cases- and then must be regulated. Letting children grow up in fundamentalist Christian/far-right/anti-science/cult-like bubbles with zero outside influence is the long term threat to democracy.
Try actual transparency, a teacher shouldn't find out (like I did) from two of her students in the same high school class that they had positive covid 19 twice since September. I was never once informed either student was positive once never mind twice.... Never contacted, never asked to get tested, never even given the choice to get tested as a precaution!!!!! And the school didn't even need to disclose the students names.. all they had to do was say hey out of the 10 students you have that are quarantine two or whatever number was positive. Never asked me any questions, never contact traced me.... Nothing... I have no access to testing weekly for my job... (I am not saying mandate, but I should have a choice too with available access)
Why should you be any different than nurses?
First, it sounds like you have a problem on the local maybe school board level. It is dangerous and irresponsible not to inform teachers that someone in their class has tested positive. It jeopardizes the entire school's safety and guarantees transmittal of the virus onto unsuspecting vulnerable people. On a side note, all children MUST get certain vaccines/shots in order to attend school which means all anti-vaxxers have been vaccinated if they attended school in the US. Yet they want to argue against a vaccine for a deadly mutating virus that have killed hundreds of thousands of Americans in less than two years?
BOOST this comment because this is beyond important for people to hear.
You said no one contact traced you, but they did tell you that someone in your class tested positive?
