India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Russia on July 8-9, for discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This will be PM Modi's first trip to Moscow since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. The Indian foreign ministry stated that PM Modi and President Putin will discuss current regional and global issues of mutual concern, and assess the full spectrum of multifaceted relations between the two nations. PM Modi had last visited Russia in 2019 to attend the 20th India-Russia Annual Summit held in Vladivostok. On Vantage tonight, Palki Sharma brings you the full story.

There were widespread rumours after Indian support for Russia in the Ukraine war that the US was not happy with Modi and therefore was keen to weaken him politically i.e. end his majority in the parliament. This was in the hope of making Modi more compliant with US demands. And Modi did end up losing his majority and has to now rely on his coalition allies. But guess what, after becoming the PM, Modi’s first state visit is to Russia. This is a signal of defiance from Modi to the US showing them that he will still continue strengthening his ties with Russia. If you cannot see this it is your bias and hypocrisy that prevents you.
