    Thank you very much for your in-depth analysis. I have shot about 60 weddings pretty much retired from weddings but for most of my weddings I used a quantium flash with fantastic results. I am coming out of retirement to shoot a wedding this weekend and the batteries are shot and I can’t get the replaced until Monday.The only gripe I every had was it could not be directly attached to the hot shoe. I was all set to buy the profoto and just thought I would double check with RUclips to see the other flashes available. I was able to buy new a Godox V1 and two extra batteries a Godox AD200Pro an AK-R1 accessory kit and a new Benro monopod for 1157.00. You saved me a bunch of money…

      Agree I too would be amused to see how F-Stoppers could possibly find for Profoto A1 vs Godex V1 - except and unless you need full system compatibility with your current Profoto kit. Oh! I forgot, A1 must be better as it says "Pro...." on the flash. No, surely even F-Stoppers wouldn't advance that argument - would they? At the risk of blasphemy, I reflect upon and misappropriate Oliver Cromwell's words (in battle) .... "every army thinks God is on their side" - as I look at the name printed on my V1.

      I'm torn. Back in 2014 I drooled over the b1 and was ready to shell out the money for it. I thought it was worth it's pricetag. But, now with other companies closing the performance gap so much, their equipment now seems overpriced. People will always shout "China!" "Copycats", to justify the price difference. I think something that will be really telling is whatever Paul C. Buff is currently working on. They've teased a more modern release, and if its similar to some of Profoto's lights in terms of features, it will be interesting to see what price it comes in at.

    Profoto... I was tempted to buy some of their shiz a year ago, then did some research, and decided I wouldn't touch that junk with a 40 foot pole. They look sharp and professional, and are EXTREMELY well marketed, but for their over-inflated prices that's all you're getting, well marketed average products. Give a whole bunch of social influencers free shit and sponsorship, and you've got yourselves a money tree. Thank god we have a bunch of Tubers like YOU who give honest UNBIASED reviews so we can spend our money more wisely.

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 5 лет назад +1

      Big B You appear to have never worked in a serious studio. For years the only choices were Broncolor and Profoto for high end floor packs and the best range of light shapers. Broncolor was considered the higher end product, but was more expensive, while Profoto had better color, and made the Magnum reflector which was very popular. And they tended toward a bit more innovation than Bronnie. However I always went Profoto because of lower price and better color, plus they pioneered battery powered floor packs and monoheads for outdoor use which I love and use.
      Then there were the smaller scale one or two man studios who went for Elinkroms and other budget options. For years these budget alternatives were okay, but not as powerful or reliable for larger studio use. A funny thing has happened though, manufacturing costs and techniques have improved and these budget options are getting better all the time and have become good choices for a lot of serious studio use.
      And then there are wanna-be’s who think that studios invest tens of thousands of dollars only because of being duped by marketing. Get real. Pro flash gear was being made for a century before the RUclips influencers you seem to be hyper-aware of. Your statement makes you look like a very inexperienced and very immature amateur who does not have the budget for professional gear, and so slags-off the gear you secretly wish you could afford.

    • @PossMcLeod
      @PossMcLeod 5 лет назад

      @@artistjoh lol. Yeah you're right, I AM an amateur, and have never worked in a studio, kudos for pointing that out, I knew from the get-go you were a sharp one lol. Doesn't mean I'm not entitled to an opinion does it? Also, thanks for the history lesson, didn't know all that, and while it's interesting, and obviously nostalgic for you, what happened in the past is irrelevant to me as a user NOW. When there are cost-effective and sometimes superior options out there, why would I NOT choose those?
      In much the same way as Sigma put the wind up Nikon and Canon by producing cheaper and ofter superior lenses in their Art series range, and Sony has done similar things with their camera bodies, older companies who have not adapted to the changing tech and cost structure, and who continue to keep their prices inflated, but who rely on clever marketing to continue to charge higher prices, are no good to me. The Profoto A1 is the perfect example. It's a piece of shit not worth anywhere near $1K US. My 'giving social media influencers free shit' was primarily aimed at the A1 marketing, because that's exactly what they did there. Then there are the other Profoto flashes and monolights that have similar (and often superior) competition for less money, from competitors like GodOx.
      But if you don't care, and want to keep supporting companies just because of the nostalgia, or because they used to be the go-to company, than cut loose bro, more power to ya! I'll use the money I save to educate and train myself so in your eyes I'm worthy of having an opinion. A pipe dream I know, YOU'RE NEVER SATISFIED WITH ME (sob sob), but it's a dream none the less lol.
      Peace and Love to ya :)

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 5 лет назад +1

      Big B you need to learn to express opinions in calmer, less dramatic terms to be taken seriously. Again, your lack of experience causes you to not understand why certain equipment is used in certain situations. In a studio environment you might have a dozen people handling the equipment and the gear is expected to last many years. A $10,000 device which lasts for 10 years of hard usage is a whole lot cheaper (at $1,000 per year) than a $2,000 alternative that lasts just one year. These are the sort of factors that a studio is interested in. Broncolor and Profoto both make gear that has proven itself to be dependable over the long term like that while budget alternatives have up until now tended to not be so dependable. If you have a $20,000 shoot in progress you cannot afford to have gear failures at crucial times.
      Godox is surprising a lot of us with their value for money, but the jury is still out on whether or not they make equipment that will still be operating reliably after 10 years. However, Godox and other budget manufacturers have really lifted their game in recent years and the quality differences are becoming less. That is good for all of us.
      Profoto was the company that first produced a speedlight-like flash that used studio-like light shapers. It was an excellent idea and has been very popular and as a result Godox has come in with a similar device at a better price. They have also introduced so e very good studio gear. I think it is great that they are doing that and that long term it should force some price reductions from Profoto and Broncolor.
      But a studio already heavily invested in Profoto light shapers is not going to rush into Broncolor, Elinkrom, Godox, etc overnight because these lighting systems are an integrated whole. For example, my floor pack works with my heads and they work with the shapers and so on. In addition Profoto control is built into the Phase One camera system. It works, is reliable, and gear that is nearly 20 years old works well with the newer items. It would cost a large fortune to change to another brand and several years of work to pay for it all and for what benefit? To get another system that works as well?The great advantage with Profoto is color. No other manufacturer is as good with color. And I know the gear will not cause me any troubles.
      You seem focused on a very minor product, the A1. I don’t use the A1 because I use the B1 system outdoors and it works brilliantly for me. The A1 is too small and limited for my needs but it and the Godox will be suitable for many people. However, you seem to equate the A1 with the entirety of Profoto products which is nonsense.
      You also have a tendency to think that professional photographers are idiots who buy equipment without any thought. I have around half a million dollars of equipment in my studio. I can assure you that when needing to spend big bucks I do it only by testing equipment thoroughly and considering the bigger picture of how it works with existing equipment, durability, and long term value. I look at specs, and I look at reviews, but I also negotiate. When you are a larger buyer you never pay the asking price for supplies. It is a reality that budget equipment has small margins for sellers and so discounts are less, but higher priced items do have larger margins and prices for customers like myself are substantially discounted. Shops tend to compete for the bigger customers and the discounts mean that the price differential between the premium brands and the budget ones are not as great as you expect from the actual asking prices.

      @@artistjoh Holy crap bro! Just got home from work and discover with War and Peace Photography Edition on my doorstep! lol. My initial thought tho is that you seem pretty fired up and keen to spend a lot of time responding to someone (me) who you consider an amateur and not worth your time. A bit of a paradox, but you're the expert, so I'll defer to your better judgement lol. Let me get some sleep, then grab some popcorn at the shops on the morrow and get back to you! Chat Soon Bhagwan! :)

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 5 лет назад

      Big B You were so over the top with your comment and clearly have little experience in how things work in bigger studios so you fired me up to go into more detail than I normally would. Hopefully you have a little insight into how purchasing decisions are made, and I feel a little better for ranting in combat with over the top RUclips comments, so we both benefit :) I think the Godox V1 is looking like a fabulous product, but my Profoto gear is also fantastic equipment that I love using. If you ever get the chance to use Profoto or Broncolor floor packs, heads, and shapers I am sure you would love the experience and creative freedom the gear allows, and in the field there is nothing better than Profoto B1 and shapers for fashion shoots. The A1 and V1 are quite different beasts that are lighter and even more portable, but also much lower in light output so suit different kinds of jobs. Different horses for different courses.

As an event shooter, this is vital information to me. I'll find out for myself in a few days, as I've just ordered a pair of V1s during Black Friday sales. The AF aid lights in my V860II and TT350 flashes do nothing for Sony bodies, though the one in my X2T-S seems to work. Fingers crossed...

    Hi Robert, thanks for your ongoing informative concise reviews on Godox kit. You are now my goto reference on small lighting.
    I'm now 1 year into Godox, use regularly, like and consider my switch a totally positive transition. I sold 6 speedlights (4 Nikon speedlights, 2 Yongnuo) plus battery packs and a Profoto B2 kit to standardise mainly on multiple AD200s and one new V1. Saving was considerable. Like you I can't speak for long term longevity but think it doesn't need to endure as long as Profoto or Nikon lights to still offer great performance and value. I luckily sold my B2 just before newer B10 was announced so didn't drop as much as I might otherwise have done. Truth is Profoto make great kit, but so do Godox, why pay more unless your are heavily invested in Profoto and need same trigger compatibility.

    Thank god for GODOX.......this company is proving that for YEARS the big companies have been slamming the photographers with over pricing and gouging. Profoto and the others that overprice because of their name is in for a big awakening and can go and depend on the photographers that are in it for the name on the flash, equipment etc......rather than the actual use. I am happy about all this but enraged about the last 29 years of my career getting hosed by the big companies.

      Ok but wich company spend lot of money in R&D for the product , and witch company just wait for the product to copy ... It's not the production that cost a lot, it's the R&D !!

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 5 лет назад +2

      martin miller @jody amiet is right on this one. Godox is more about cloning than being a total innovator, and this particular speedlight category was pioneered by Profoto. However jody does not acknowledge the other big factor at play, and that is that older companies like Canon, Zeiss, Profoto, Phase One-Mamiya, Broncolor, etc grew up in an era when there were smaller numbers of photographers and costs per sale were higher. In today’s market the costs per sale have dropped dramatically as sales numbers have increased and these older companies are reluctant to change their pricing structure accordingly to reflect the new market realities. They have to change or go extinct. Instead they prefer to use cost reductions to increase profits. Companies like Godox and Sigma are doing well because they can now match the quality, sell at a lower price, and make more profit through volume. Gone is the era when Sigma and other budget manufacturers just made crap. I wish the traditional pro gear firms would wake up to themselves and get real with prices.

    Typo on my datasheet for specs (that occured when I converted decimals to fractions) on the 1/4 power setting of the Godox V1. It is F11 not F11 9/10. Graph available on my community tab.
    Regarding omission of AF-assist discussion. At the time of recording, there was no clear answer as to how the production V1 would have it's af assist beam. Now I can say, it's just like the V860II. Not that I could compare against Profoto regardless, since Profoto does not make a Sony compatible A1, so the AF assist won't communicate with the Sony camera.
    Also Profoto A1 doesn't have reverse tilt on the head, the Godox V1 does. This is a nice feature for event photographers!

    Thanks for review! As for me, the accuracy of the color temperature is more important than the price or speed of the pulse. It seems that 6300 Kelvin is not much different from 5700-5800K. If you shoot weddings, portraits, where it is important to accurately convey skin color, then PROFOTO looks more preferable. Overpay initially to save your time in the future when processing photos.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  Год назад +4

      I personally don't buy the prominence in weddings/portraits because the % of time that you're using flash in 5600K is quite low. Indoor lighting is generally 3000-4300 in which either light would require gels, indoors off window light is closer to 6k (higher if it's overcast), in shade is 6-8k depending on strength of cover. The only time you're actually in 5600 is if you're shooting with your subject in direct sunlight, which most tend to avoid except as a rim light.

    • @jacques424242
      @jacques424242 10 месяцев назад

      For studio portrait work, well, gels are cheap. For wedding/event work, I'm gonna want gels anyway to balance flash and ambient, so the slight coolness of the V1 is of no consequence.

    Thanks so much for doing this comparison! My main concern with the V1 is the colour temp being so far from the AD400. I'd prefer not to have to use a 1/4 CTO when combining the two lights... But for that price, it's still very tempting. For the thermal protection, you mention a counter, rather than a thermostat being the measure for it. How long does the counter last?

    Godox keep inovating and delivering awesome products at extremely competitive prices. I love the ease of connectivty and performance of all of my Godox gear. It would be nice if Godox would release some advanced training on their products e.g. Multi Mode - Hi Sync (not HSS) on the AD400 Pro etc. I would like to see Godox release a reliable Speedlite cold/hot shoe clamps (other than their great S Bracket) as my Godox V860II S (Sony) struggles to be stable in any foot mounted clamp due to the fragile Sony Mi hotshoe interface. I am yet to try the Magmod Magrip. Have you tried it on a Sony/Godox flash?

    As for me, I'm already committed to Flashpoint (Godox via Adorama) so it's just a matter of whether to upgrade to the round head flash (answer: yes!)

      I know a wedding shooter who has A1s with a pair of Profoto battery-powered monolights that have practical modeling lights built in, and those modeling lights have adjustable color temp. This makes them functional for both flash and constant light applications, which is really nice. That said, I'm sticking with V1s and AD200s. Decent LED video lights are dirt-cheap. Not quite as convenient, but for the price difference...

    Thank you Rob, this is very informative. I was a Godox user for a few years, and switched to Profoto a few months ago. The only reason I did is because of the thermal protection kicking in with Godox. The way I shoot, more than 5 times, my AD200 entered thermal protection leaving me hanging. I LOVE my Godox but I can't risk it anymore in front of clients. Again, this is due the way I shoot, very fast with high outputs, but was a deal breaker for me.

    Thank you very much for the in depth testing! Ever since the A1 had come out, I have been inquiring with Profoto if they could offer it with the Olympus / Panasonic foot / chip / firmware as they offer in the TTL-O Air Remote. The have resoundingly responded that they have no interest in offering that configuration, which given our investment in Profoto was quite disappointing. I've place the V1 on preorder (when it was announced), so once we have tested it at the studio, i have a feeling we will switch over all of our lighting to Flashpoint / Godox. I just want one system for our lighting, and I think Godox is forward thinking, especially for those of us not using Canon or Nikon.

    How is the color of the Godox compared to its studio flashes?
    I saw a video where a professional explained the huge advantage of having the colors match so he didn't have a color cast. The difference between Profoto and Godox doesn't really matter, the similarity between flashes of the same brand does!
    Imagine having these work together with the studio ones and having to edit all the photos because of an slight cast.

    Excellent info. Concise, factual allowing most to clearly see that Godox is the way to go.
    Looks like Godox is really 'sticking it' to Profoto, but I also suspect Profoto had their design copied in defiance of any legal rights. Who can successfully due the Chinese?
    I saw the light (metaphorically) 8 months ago when I sold my Profoto B2 kit and 6 speedlights. Bought 3 X AD200s, round heads, mod kits etc, so think the V1 would be an excellent addition to my kit.
    For most I suspect that compelling Godex wins are...

    2) battery power on standby

      I've already made videos to help reduce user error for misfires. I'll admit there's lots of things in the manual that are unintuitive (like how rechargeable batteries in the trigger will increase misfires), but provided the 3-5 rapid shots allow the light to recycle, I do not experience any misfires in that scenario, or in general. Just gotta know how to use the equipment properly.

Never a misfire or failure to fire with one unusual exception: several years ago in one hotel with a ton of 2.4GHz radio interference that overwhelmed the TT350's radio. X1T worked fine. Today's channel-scanning feature probably would have resolved it.

      I think both offer rather simple displays, though the Profoto is probably more user friendly, specifically because of the bold UI, clean display, and integer outputs. One think I dislike about the Profoto's menu navigation is how the dial wraps around the screen in an irregular pattern, but I'm sure I'd adapt to it quickly.
      Focus assist light was impossible for me to test. Profoto A1 doesnt have a Sony model, so the Nikon version won't communicate with my shoe.
