I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Stephanie Janis Stiefel. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, I was able to scale this quickly to $150,000. If I can do this in a year, anyone can.

This is one of my favorite books. One of the lesson I got, apart from the great lessons summarised here, is to love your work and excel at it. To quote Sharru Nada: "Life is rich with many pleasures to enjoy. Each has its place. I am glad that work is not reserved for slaves. Were that the case, I would be deprived of my greatest pleasure. Many things do I enjoy but nothing takes the place of work".

I started an auto transfer from my one checking account into another account of $100 per week. It’s now at $9100. Was effortless and added up quickly. Sure I could put it toward my mortgage but my mortgage is like 3% and the payment is only $435 which is already including a little extra monthly, also automatically.

(want to mention it as a callback) It was a great read for someone like me looking for directions on the personal finance. It was so grounded, no jargons, and the things were kept simple in the current times where we are slurped with jargons. Glad that there is a detailed breakdown of the book. One way to minimize the anxiety out of stock market investing, is to make sure you keep a large cash cushion. I invest in the market, but never put all my money in market. I have been a dividend focused investor for a long time. This does not mean I don't own growth stocks, I do. A well rounded portfolio should be a mixture of both categories.

Great video, thanks Nischa. I have found taxes to be the single biggest expense over a year, and I earn just enough to pay the basic rate of tax. VAT, fuel levy, council tax, income tax, dividends tax, everywhere I look there's a tax. Did the richest man in Babylon need to stomach a 40% tax cost on income and basic consumption? I daresay not! In Damien Talks Money, Damo examined the power of the Cash ISA. The tax free earnings from cash saved in an ISA presently deliver real terms ex gratia returns c 4 - 6.2% per annum, depending on one's tax circumstances. I ain't no gold bug or hoarder of cash, I am long in equities and rental property, but the low-risk returns of cash at prevailing rates of interest and CPI in an ISA is a bountiful yet low-hanging fruit. As Dominic Frisby says, "Hold 10% of gold and hope the price never goes up!" This too, from a wealth-protection aspect, seems sound advice. Thanks again for the book recommendation!
