I’m a licensed funeral director and embalmer in Tennessee. This series is pretty accurate when it comes to the embalming process and also embalming a body that’s come from the medical examiner’s office as was the case of Nell. In the case of most suicide, homicide or “accidents” the remains are sent to the M.E., where a full post is performed to determine the cause of death. That means that the vital organs are removed, weighed and examined. That includes the brain, which is why Nell’s skull had been cut open. The viscera( organs) are placed in a bag and in most cases that bag is placed in the thoracic cavity. When a funeral home receives the remains of an autopsy, the viscera are treated with a powder formaldehyde( paraformaldehyde) and the body is injected with embalming fluid in the carotid, brachial and femoral arteries.
The restorative aspect is spot on as well…. Except when you apply makeup, we put paper around the collar of the shirt or blouse the deceased is wearing for obvious reasons.

How bad are all those chemicals for the environment?
@@zammmerjammer extremely harmful and toxic if not handled correctly. Funeral homes and cemeteries are regulated by their states laws and have to meet safety mandated standards in regards to the handling and storage of chemicals in the embalming room and the interment of embalmed remains in cemeteries.
There are alternatives that do not require the use of those chemicals, such as direct cremation or direct burial. There are certain religious faiths that also forgo the use of embalming.
From a personal choice, I choose cremation.
Definitely, Jewish funerals don't include embalming. I can't imagine why it would be a thing. I suppose with an open casket, it's preferable. Otherwise, I don't understand it.
@@TheKelJacob absolutely! Judaism, Islam and Baha’i religions don’t require embalming. But the modern day practice of embalming has its roots in the civil war. Soldiers fighting for the union were embalmed and returned home to their families. Also in the turn of the century, having the remains of the deceased in their homes or families home before burial or entombment was far less taboo and very common. They were in caskets placed on top of ice.
But to the point of the open casket and it’s purpose. It really depends on the individual on how they handle grief. There are the seven stages of grief that we all learn in psych 101 and although we all handle grief in our own way, based on many different factors, there are ways to offer comfort during the grieving process. The restorative aspect of embalming is one of those. It’s illustrated in this episode very well with the embalming of the older woman. Shirley( the embalmer) explains to the child (I’m assuming the grandson of the deceased) that she will make his grandmother look likes she’s at rest and although she had been sick before her passing, she will make her look the way she did before she was sick. By filling out her face, applying makeup and using certain lighting in the visitation/ parlor/ chapel, the deceased is presented to the surviving members of their family and friends in an appearance other than the one they last saw them as when they were sick.
Fun fact they had a funeral director help for the role. So they probably got the details from her to ensure they were realistic.
The method of storytelling is incredible here. Each character is defined in a mosaic of flashbacks which make them rounded human beings, not token horror stereotypes.
The next 4 episodes are some of the best hours of dark TV in years.
You guys jump so hard you make me flinch at things I’ve seen a dozen times. This series is absolutely superior in the writing and acting, all scary stuff aside. And that’s what makes horror work. You have to believe the situation, and you have care about the characters. This series accomplishes both in truckloads.
This show only gets better. Adore you guys so much. Can’t wait for the next episode!!
Man, without spoiling anything, once you finish this show, you'll look back at it being way more sad than it is scary. Writing is so so good.
The first episode sets a precedent for being scary. Every episode after, a lot of the suspense comes from the anticipation of the next scare. There are plenty more scares to come, but I like how Flanagan misdirects you then just scares the crap out of you with absolutely nothing. Good, good stuff!
In the original book each of the bedrooms was decorated with a different color scheme, one of the reasons for the name of the Red Room. The mysterious barking dogs are also from the original book, as well as the wall banging. The book that Theo is reading outside on the wall is The Lottery, another book by Shirley Jackson.

"This series is very good", and it gets better and better the further you get into it.
I've had sleep paralysis a few times, especially when I was really depressed and either had a very late, restless night or took an afternoon nap. First time was as a kid and I saw glowing aliens walking past my ajar bedroom door; I screamed when one looking in at me. I once woke up to a dark shadow standing in the doorway to my apartment calling my name. I saw *something* crouched and watching me at the foot of the bed. I've felt someone spooning me from behind and stroking my face and calling my name. I've seen my life's sins blown up and shown to me to a chorus of laughter.
Thankfully I'm in a better place now and I haven't had any sleep paralysis events in many years. I can totally understand why people believe they are ghosts or demons; you feel awake, the hallucinations are as vivid as real life, and not being able to move is extremely upsetting. Still, people can know about it and they perform all sorts of mental gymnastics to make their ghost story real because they want so badly to believe it really was a visitation from beyond death. Because it feels damn real.
I've never had sleep paralysis, but I did have a hypnopompic hallucination of the sort that often accompanies sleep paralysis. I was nine years old and I "woke up" and saw a skeleton standing in the hall outside my room, looking in at me. That scared the crap out of me, but the next morning my first thought was that it had been some sort of prank my parents had pulled...the notion of ghosts never even crossed my mind. It was over a decade before I read about such waking dreams and found that they're not that uncommon.
I have narcolepsy which sometimes means being half-awake but also half-dreaming. My cats are a nice reality verification system. If my cat is sleeping peacefully beside me, that means the man creeping around my bedroom is not real. Though, just like dreams, sometimes things get weird. Like the time I dreamed that huge Buckner zombie from Cabin in the Woods was standing at the foot of my bed... and he was making donuts (I had been watching a lot of the Great British Bakeoff that week).

I have semi-regular hypnagogic hallucinations, usually it’s a fairly repetitive experience. I feel like there’s something cat-sized crawling across the bed and climbing on top of my chest. It causes some breathing difficulty and paralysis, but since I know what’s happening, I can usually get enough vocal control to say out loud “Go Away.” Still half-asleep at this stage. I usually have to repeat it two or three times, but it works.
Another fun one I used to have as a kid was seeing a real-life version of Dick Dastardly, complete with the cape and moustache, grinning at me as he lifted the foot of my bed and tipped me into a hole in the ground.
fun fact: Shirley is named after the author of the book this series is loosely based off, Shirley Jackson :) there are also references to the 1963 film adaptation _The Haunting_, particularly the scene with the loud banging (except in the film, it was with Nell and Theo). Also can I just say, the casting for this series is so on point? Like the child actors and the adult actors look so alike (maybe not Luke, his head went from round to long lol) and they even look like they could be Carla Gugino and Timothy Hutton's kids.
Russ Tamblyn, who plays Nell's psychiatrist, appeared in the original film adaptation which was a neat callback to that!
Another fun fact, just apropos of nothing. Elizabeth Reaser spent several months interviewing morticians to get her part down. When asked, every single one of them said straight out they DO NOT AND WOULD NEVER work on a deceased friend or relative.
I love that you guys had no idea what you were getting into. Like many have said, it's a great show to watch, even without the horror elements.
The great thing about this series is not only the scary parts but the intricate family relationships as well. Really puts meat on the bones for the story, so to speak. Nice review.

I like how the director used Henry Thomas in Dr. Sleep. A read a lot of comments from people that didn’t like him in it, but I thought he did a good job. I like when directors work with the same actors on different projects. Darabont uses the same actors. You’ll see in the Mist if you haven’t already recorded the reaction
I also liked him in that role, that film would've been terrible if they CGI'd in the original actors, I liked all the replacement actors, the actor who played Wendy did a really good job.
Mike Flanagan loves to work with tried and tested friends.
if you go through his movies on imdb you will see A LOT of familiar names throughout his career. especially After Hill House. Kate Siegel is his most frequent collaboratres.
he is like the Quentin Tarantino of Horror, John Hughes of Horror, The Quality Kevin Smith of Horror.
Henry Thomas was great in Midnight Mass as well.

My family owned a funeral Home from the mid 60's until 2015 and i worked there from time time since 1993 (13 years old) and i can assure You, the things You see in this line of work... Still,for me, the scariest were always the living ones.

I just finished the series yesterday and it's terrific! I've also had sleep paralysis multiple times and it's scary as hell!
When the mom is talking to Shirl about designing the forever house some creepy stuff is going on in the dining room in the background.
There is a documentary about sleep paralysis called “The Nightmare.” Super creepy. Definitely up there as one of the scariest movies
I have had some major migraines where there are light storms in my eyes. The pain, nausea, and weirdness of them means I have absolutely NO patience with anything and usually have to go lie down for a while. Lying down helps but I have to remove any stimulus (visual or auditory) and just wait it out. There is no rest during this time.
the guy that stars in this is the kid from the film ET, a great actor, im so surprised he never did more films.

Henry Thomas is such a underrated actor
It's hard to overstate how great this show is; how well-acted, well-written, well-shot, deeply metaphysical and interesting. There are weak moments, obviously in a 10 hour thing. But this is actually as good as reading a novel. It creates other ways for your imagination to fill in blanks in the same way that words would.
Each episode, made in a point of view of a character with their memory of the house is pretty much genius storytelling ! It engage you more and more in the mystery and the pieces of the puzzle !
What Olivia and Hugh were describing as a "color storm" is a Visual Aura. There are videos here on youtube showing simulations of what they can look like (though they vary quite a bit from person to person). They often occur shortly before a migraine. In recent years I mostly just get the aura without the actual headache, thankfully.
The one thing that the simulations can't convey is that the aura starts as a *literal* blind spot. The simulations might give the impression that your vision is merely smudged or obscured by greyness or by the wacky patterns and colors, but in reality it seems to completely stop working in places, with nothing (not even blackness) taking the place of the nonfunctional parts. Those parts might as well not exist anymore because your brain conceals them from your awareness, especially early on when the affected area is small.
You can easily see a very similar phenomenon for yourself by checking your physiological blind spots. They are constantly in your field of vision, but you rarely if ever notice them. I often notice an aura is beginning because I'm reading and suddenly realize that some part of a word or sentence is just not there ... and neither is the spot where it should've been. I notice this consciously because, while my brain is trying to conceal the fact that something's missing *visually*, it isn't doing that linguistically. The text doesn't actually work as well without the affected words, letters, or punctuation.

Edit: I also used to want to work in a mortuary or morgue. For me, it was about helping preserve someone's memory, and to give them one last chance to get treated with dignity.
I still would love that job, but turns out I have a genetic neurological disorder and am losing coordination and strength in my arm and leg muscles. You need to be able to life a body. I just am not able to anymore. Which is a bummer, but it is what it is lol

Hey Sam. If you want to get your embalming fix on without the actual creepiness. You should check out the HBO series, "Six Feet Under" It ran at the same time as the Sopranos and it help put HBO on the map as far as original TV series.
It's up there with the best that have been made, including "True Crime".

Migraines do sometimes have colors I lose vision in spots and have flashing lights. I’ve had them since I was a kid. Anyway that’s what the mom meant by colors etc.
This series is the definition of good. It's the best. Ever. Ep. 6 is probably the best TV ever made.

Good stuff guys, a fantastic show. Mike Flanagan is a horror genius, he’s the director/writer/creator of this show, his wife is also the actress who plays Theo. Anyway nice reaction as always.
What is really brilliant is that each of the first 5 episodes are each kids backstories going down in age (oldest to youngest) but each episode goes up in intensity of the kids terror experiences.
Sleep Paralysis is a bitch, I have had to deal with it most of my life (55 years), learning lucid dreaming has help a little though.

You guys should check out the original film "The Haunting" 1960 I think - I still think it was better than this one in terms of basic filmmaking - the movie was made in such a way that they die not need gruesome slasher style, they psychologically got to you and the actors were better. Give some of the older films a shot and you'll be surprised how the craft went in those days without CG or tricks. Hope you guys get more take-in if the story and episodes as a whole because it’s something else. As vaguely as possible as I can be I tend let the series episodes wash over me and occasionally pointed out few things as they happened which is super fun ...it’s hard to pin down totally what until end of episodes.

A couple of good movies to consider for October scarefest: the Omen, and the original Flatliners (with Keifer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts).
I absolutely loved Hill House. Bly Manor, nor so much. But definitely watch Midnight Mass. Quite possibly better than Hill House.

The great thing about this show is that nothing is done just for scare value. Everything is for a reason. It all ties together eventually. Pretty rare. Good horrors are pretty rare also.
That's not pretty rare, I don't know what shit from today you're used to watching, but that's actually how real stories are written. This show's "coming together" was just terrible and this series jumped the shark on the funeral episode.

I have a different problem. I don't dream, ever that I recall. I do however have nightmares. Not every night, but I don't actually sleep every night as I also have insomnia. Ain't life grand?
