- Next video in my Funk Keyboard Tutorial series. Again, the key is G minor and the lick is rooted in the G minor pentatonic scale (G, Bb, C, D, F) with the tritone/blue note (C#) thrown in. It is basically a 6-note riff that you repeat over and over, so a kind of a arpeggio and I'll show you three variants of the lick. It is rhythmically pretty interesting in that each time you'll repeat the 1st note will alternate on being either on-beat or off-beat.
Played on a Kawai CS-11 using its Würlitzer sample over a groove I made on a Boss RC 505 looper. A Dave Smith Sequential Prophet 6 is on duty for synth bass and pad.
Learn how to play funk licks and tricks on the keys!
Music is easy to a point. I'm a musician. My father was a musician. I used to say to him as a kid. I just want to learn the licks and boogie woogie. Lots of fun. He said that's fine but if u want to be a musician you have to eat your spinach before u get the ice cream. The spinach is theory and reading music. He was right as all fathers are. Great vid but encourage learning why these licks work.I'm a profesinal musician because I did the work. Li cks are fun, but you will never get gigs just riffing. Thar being said if you want to just have fun then by all means play music. I just know the reality of being a musician. It's not licks.
Thanks for this. Ive begun to learn piano and i find learning licks like these fun and engaging. If you were a beginner and needed to relearn funk where would you start?
Nice one Dr Funk! I'll be having a going at learning some of your cool riffs
