Two things I loved: 1. When he went to size Andy up the warden held his bible in his hands and gave it back to Andy saying, "Salvation lies within". 2. When we see the bible at the end, the hollowed out section hiding the hammer begins on page one of the Book Of Exodus. Also, after the warden murders Tommy, Andy tells Red about his Mexico plan. Red calls it "a shitty pipe dream" then Andy crawls through a sewer pipe to achieve it.

that remark gave andy the inspiration to escape! this film was loosely based on 'the count of monte cristo' , which has a parallel story line in that the wrong man is imprisoned for life for a crime he did not commit but escapes after 14 years & gets his revenge on those responsible for his arrest! one could also liken the shawshank redemption to the wrongful imprisonment of nurse, lucy letby, who received a 'whole life' sentence for the murder of 7 babies, something i am certain she did not commit!!!

There was no way the warden would ever let Andy out of the prison alive. It wasn't about the money. Andy knew enough about what was going on in that prison that he could put the warden and most of the guards in prison with his testimony. So the warden had to keep him in the prison where the warden had total control over him.

He knew the warden's arrogance and greed prevented him from noticing if anything was amiss. Brilliant script.

You could use that to get a social security number and then more ID. I worked with another teacher who said he used to apply for a lost driver's license in the name of someone who had payed him $1000 to take the teachers exam for them. Hey Beesleys. I used to live in Illinois until about 3.5 years ago when I moved to the suburban areas of Cleveland, Ohio. It turns out that about 40 minutes south of me lies the abandoned Mansfield Reformatory, which is the prison facility depicted in this movie. It is also said to be haunted, incidentally, so they have tours for both the movie and for ghost hunts. Shawshank Redemption is entirely a work of fiction but the movie was written so well that many believe (erroneously) it to have been based on a true story. Also, did you know? Cleveland is a very artistic city and they make a lot of movies here. It is also the birthplace of Superman, and they are making a new Superman movie even now (7/27/2024).

      Laughable about "not threatening it".
Shawshank is not as influential as any of the movies I mentioned, nor is it as good.
Your opinion is only consistent with that of some IMDB users.
Shawshank comes nowhere near Apocalypse Now, which is more than a film.
And for you to claim hilariously that Clockwork doesn't threaten it "at all", is hilarious.
Opinion is fun, so long as it is reasonable...and you claiming that somehow Shawshank is both better, more important and more influential than Apocalypse Now ESPECIALLY is absurd to the extreme. There is not one important or influential filmmaker, critic, or film scholar that puts Shawshank in their Top 5 of all time, let alone at the very top, ahead of superior films. The directing in it is simple, smart (not simplistic), and effective but nothing special. The screenplay is memorable, but not exceptional. The movie is wonderfully heartwarming but not at all challenging or daring.

Good Evening. Although set in Maine, the prison used was the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. The large main building and Cell Block 1 are now a Museum. They offer tours, can be used for special occasions, and offer overnight cell accommodations for the brave. ( haunted ) The street scenes were primarily N. Main St where the shop owners agreed to have their stores redone to fit the time period. Many still look the same. The halfway house is the Bissman Building, and still looks the same today. The store was the E and B Market on 4th Street which has been torn down. I was fortunate to be an extra con in the yard scenes. The premiere was held at Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre, a restored 1929 movie palace, before New York and Los Angeles.. I also volunteered working the restoration. The prison was also used in the movie "Tango & Cash", and was the Russian cell block in "Airforce One". An interesting side note: In the bad winters, crows from 7 or 8 counties move into Mansfield by the hundreds due to large granaries between town and the prison. Brook's crow was a natural. The passage of time from the unfiltered Chesterfields to the filtered cigarettes offered Tommy by the warden, and the subtle aging of everyone is superb. I am 75 now with Parkinson's and don't get to attend movies. I enjoy the reaction videos on RUclips.

Few notice that the Parole Board gets progressively younger as our main character (Red) gets older. Just another subtle nod to time progression from the film makers.

This is often compared to The Green Mile for good reason, or properly vice versa. I could listen to Morgan Freemen read a phone book, this film is a masterpiece. There are endless things to be said about it but I will let it speak for itself. The most heartbreaking scene, is Brookes waiting alone for Jake in the park. And he never comes...That's a never ending loneliness.
    -Brookes was here

Millie and James, now watch The Green Mile. Another prison movie, but nothing at all like this one. The Green Mile has what might be the single biggest, most hated villain in all of movie history. Watch it and see if you agree. Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan star.

That's like saying "Abraham Lincoln Vampire hunter" is based on true people & events. I mean yeah it is but the actual story is mostly made up.
Hollywood isn't history and "Glory" takes some serious liberties with the "true events" that it is based on.
All Hollywood films do this with historical events but it always amazes me that it only ever seems to be 'Braveheart' that ever cops any flak for taking liberties with historical accuracy.

Hope and salvation are the underlying themes of the Shawshank Redemption, and, of course, the Bible is the ultimate source of hope and salvation for all men, which is why the Holy Bible is a another recurring theme throughout the movie. (It is no accident that Andy conceals the rock hammer, which is the instrument by which he achieves his escape and wins his freedom, within the pages of Exodus.) By the way, the redemption is Red’s, not Andy’s. It is Red - the only guilty man in Shawshank - who has lost his hope and faith in mankind during his long years of imprisonment, and in whom hope needs to be rekindled.

Ok so this kept coming up so I had to say something. Prisons don’t just house a single type of criminal. I don’t know if that’s how it is in the UK, but in the US, where the movie takes place, prisons house all types of criminals. So yes, there are murderers there, but there’s also ppl in there for robbery, breaking and entering, arson, etc. All types of crime from a wide range of severity. Also, why were you so confident that he was guilty. I feel like it was pretty clear that he was innocent, even before the movie confirmed it. Y’all thinking he was guilty affected how you viewed Andy, which is really a shame. Genuinely, I don’t understand why you were so confident that he was guilty.

Thanks for sharing your reactions and thoughts as well. It was nice to see it again, after a fashion, with you guys. Liking your style a lot. Big shoutout from this old, longhaired, hippy dude in the mountains of East Tennessee. U.S.A. . Cannot wait for your next. Much peace, and lots of love. Bless. you and yours. Best wishes.
