    I got half of my thyroid removed a week ago. Mines was 3.9cm.After surgery was diagnosed as variant papillary carcinoma dr say it was cancerous,but didn't understantand what it means,was not explain to me.But also pathology report diagnosis say,papillary thyroid carcinoma,follicular variant,encapsulated with capsular invasion. Can you please explain what it means and what kind I had,Dr did not explain to me...

    1.Mam as most commonly provisional diagnose is done by post op biopsy specimens then how the identification of gene mutation like ras, braf .. will be usefull in papillary ca. Clinically.
    2. Is the gene mutation study done on every pt.

      No,gene mutation is not done is every case.
      In cases where there is strong suspicion and less morphological evidence IHC markers or BRAF mutation test are done
