a note on this catchphrase since you'll be hearing it a lot and it doesn't translate well: "boiled" is a way of saying hardcore in japanese (think señor pink's "so hardboiled!!!") so "it wouldn't be oden if it wasn't boiled" is a pun on the literal statement that oden is a hotpot dish, and "i wouldn't be kozuki oden if i wasn't a badass"
Yeah for some reason, a lot of the puns in One Piece are extremely poorly localized. They have a habit of using more literal translations which doesn't really make sense in English.
@@GameDragon2k That always drives me insane. There are theories that have lasted literal YEARS because they're just based on shitty localizations. The goddamn fansubs are better half the time because of this lol
JP translator here - this isn't exactly true. the "hard-boiled" associated with Señor Pink most likely comes from a movie title, it's not a native feature of Japanese language. when Oden uses the boiled metaphor to refer to himself it's moreso referring to his qualities of hot-bloodedness/"fiery" passion, it's not a common expression at all
I really like the tonal shift for Oden's backstory, it really feels like a myth with events like the capital leaning slightly forward from every man simultaneously taking one step after him.
Seems the intended effect, along with how the boar incident indicates he probably took on blame for instigating other events that might have made someone else look bad. All of it adds to his reputation so he can become a larger than life figure. It all plays into at least one of the major story themes; the flow of the ages.
@@QueenBlaze We're around the same age yet, I swear, I feel like a kid sharing their favourite treat with their best friend, eager to see their reaction.
The cat not liking hot food is a play on a Japanese phrase nekojita. It means someone who can’t eat hot food or drink hot drinks and it literally means cat tongue, I’m one of those people so it’s probably my most used Japanese phrase. 😅
Same, I'm always slow to eat while others begin if it's hot soup/tea because of that. I have to let it cool down first. It's somewhat comforting that they have a word for it in Japanese, and it's probably common enough.
The story of the Akazaya 9 and Oden is so inspirational. They seriously took time away from the capital, away from everyone else to focus on their purpose, and completely changed themselves so much the people couldn’t believe it when they saw them again. There are times in life when the best thing is to get away from the mix and keep yourself busy, study properly, and focus. The people who slept on you will never believe your glow up.
7:18 Kiku’s brother Izo!! Do you remember him from Whitebeard’s crew? also on the topic of Kiku (incoming long comment) even though she isn’t really a major character in Wano, her name and the story behind it seems to have inspired a lot of the events in the first 2 acts. In Japanese folklore, Okiku 1. was a servant in charge of plates (OP Okiku was first introduced at Tsuru’s tea house holding a plate) 2. rejected a man who pressured and threatened her (OP Okiku did this also) 3. was tortured by him over a well (happened to Kidd & Killer) 4. comes back as a ghost who counts to nine (Law said that Kinemon & the others (Akazaya Nine) were ghosts)
Garp. Roger. Whitebeard. Kaido. Big Mom. Rocks. And now Oden? People really were just built different, back then. I'm so hyped that we're finally getting to see Whitebeard in his prime, being the badass that we all knew him to be. And any scene with Roger is a 10/10. Already got this backstory right up there in my top 5, just from Whitebeard and Roger being in it.
the new generation is even stronger, the old generation is in their prime ages that in one piece is on their 40s, and the new generation is on their 20s, Luffy Law and Zoro are far from what they will be in the end of the series, just look Koby 16 years old that have Rokushiki techniques in Ennies Lobby and imagine what he will became at the end
"You fear those who aren't like you because you are ignorant" -Kozuki Oden Oden's adventure is filled with some of the most wholesome moments in the series and gawd dam is so cool to see the past generation in their prime. *or you just come back another time*
Oden: "Invite me to your ship!" Whitebeard: "No" Oden: "Or I can just come back...another time..." Seeing the development of the samurai and how they grew up to eventually serve Oden is cool, but even cooler is Oden himself. We already had his list of...escapades when he was younger, but he really took a bunch of the most criminal men and turned them into hard workers and made an entire city. We also get even more cool animation with young Whitebeard (such a great character), and his gathering of the important people in the current story. Unfortunately we also get some glimpses into how Orochi is basically moving up to gain favor with the higher ups. Things are happening, but we shall enjoy it for now. Thanks for the video!
Oden pulling up on Whitebeard is like you're trying to fix a flat tire and suddenly you are hearing Banjo music coming throughs you at FULL SPEED Whitebeard really said "Kids...GET IN THE DAMN CAR NOW!!"
Something to point out is that Ace became the 2nd Commander of the Whitebeard pirates a position that was long left vacant by Whitebeard... That's what he just gave Oden here.
Aug 11, 2023, Queen started her journey in the world of One Piece... and damn the pacing she's kept up. We're almost current... I'm gonna have to start watching One Piece again to keep ahead of Queen's pace until she finally catches up.
12:20 The "Cat" saying his food is too hot is referencing a true and common colloquialism across much of Japan; people who prefer the taste of food *after* it has cooled off are sometimes called a "Cat Tongue", or that they have a cat's tongue. My wife is from Japan and I get called "Cat Tongue" fairly often because I think seasoning tastes much better when it isn't boiling ass hot 😁
So i don't know if you caught it, but the blue haired woman on Whitebeard's crew and a few others were there at Marineford. Her ship was the ice breaker that cleared a path for others to get through the ice. Even when they started their own crews, they came when Pops needed them.
24:23 Karma and Whitey Bay(the lady with blue hair on WB's Ship) are both pirates who we met in Marineford They were part of Whitebeard's allied forces during the war The callbacks are kicking in❤ Edit 25:12 Thank you Narrator lol
pre pirate kind roger, crazy to see after all this time of hearing the legend. love the story of Oden, don't know if you remember but back at marineford there was a character wielding two guns that might look familiar to you now
4:32. About that! I believe it was said somewhere that the cut that sliced the boar in half was so clean it didn’t kill it. So it was able to be stitched back together afterwards 😂 one piece is great
_Or I could just come back another time_ This is one of my favorite backstories, I love it. There's so much lore! And it's not just lore about Oden. I heard it wasn't shown in the anime. So I'm going to give a very minor spoiler: the giant boar did in fact survive. It can be seen in a later chapter in the manga with stitches on the side of its mouth, just casually hanging nearby town. It certainly didn't have a good experience, but at least all's well ends well 😅
Considering how Oden was dealing with the giant boar and Kinemon’s mistake,I’m starting to question if his infamy on his younger days is justified or not.😅
So the older brother in Pink and white stripe kimono that not Kuki who is in yellow is the pretty Japanese guy on Whitebeard's crew with the duel guns during the Marinefort arc yes that was Kuki's older sibling

So much information she could have man, just imagine the stories she could tell about it....
And of course that means she knew what happened but she ain't here no more to tell us
