Richmond and Hampton Roads are Triple A cities, not big 4 league cities. That has nothing to do with D.C.. They're extremely strategic and dutiful places, military and government, but no rich person has decided to bring a team to those areas. Plus, both areas don't grow like other sunbelt areas. Just look at the census. Hampton Roads' metro been hovering around 1.6 to 1.8 million for decades.
I agree with you on Virginia not growing fast however I will say that with the northern cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee and Detroit losing population I can see both Richmond and Norfolk with population growth. Richmond at 2.2 million people and Norfolk at 3.8 million people.

Any sports team located within just over 90 minutes of Washington D.C. will be called Washington. The entire part of Northern Virginian is considered suburban commuter territory for people that work federal jobs . If you live within 2 hours of D.C. you must have a job in D.C. so it's part of Washington D.C.
Virginia Beach isn’t right next to the Nationals. There’s 207 miles between the two. Baltimore is 40 miles from DC and Philadelphia is less that 100 miles from Baltimore.

Less than an hour drive for a professional sports game is decent. And I'm sure the people who live further out won't be complaining.
This would take quite a bit of time to develop, but it's worth noting that UVA has one of the most dominant men's soccer programs of all time. It's been a talent factory for both players and some of the best coaches in the recent history of the game. That being said, the Richmond Kickers are the only fully professional team in the state. Virginia Beach had a pro team that folded in the 90s, I think. The Kickers have some solid history but they're at the third tier, I don't know that the second tier is in their future, and the top tier is out of the question. I should note that DC United has a reserve squad that also plays at the third tier in Loudon County, and that's technically fully professional, but it isn't an independent club so there's no shot that it moves up. There is a semi professional tier 4 club in Virginia Beach that got started in 2019, and it does look like USL is looking to expand at all levels. If that club becomes fully professional, moves up a level, and finds a way to host some international matches, that could start to put them on the map. There's some distance to go with that, and I don't think they start to be a real candidate until they move up at least one level and start to get some money behind them though. It absolutely could happen though, as I do think that MLS will continue to expand.
The NHL was the closest of a Virginia expansion in 1997 called the "Hampton Roads Rhinos" in Norfolk being a real team but the league turned it down due to the market is very small not because the Capitals being close and the league choosing Nashville and Atlanta
I truly believe that Hampton Roads will have professional sports teams in every sport especially if northern places like Boston, Milwaukee, Chicago and New York all loss population. All Norfolk has to do is build a state of art Arena, Ballpark and Stadium in Norfolk to attract NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL and MLS teams to the region.

I like what the NHL did in Vegas but Vegas was always an outlier and they don’t go into untapped cities that often.
Technically the Washington Commanders are headquartered in Ashburn, Virginia, along with the team's practice facilities. The Washington Capitals also have their practice facilities in Arlington Virginia.
VA is surrounded by areas with teams. The Tidewater area could support a sports team, but it is too close to Charlotte and DC. Not to mention Memphis, though it is at the far western end of Tennessee, which is adjacent to Virginia. The best bet for bringing a team in would be to try to build a stadium in NoVa for the Commanders. The traffic would be wretched and make a bad situation worse in terms of traffic.

You have to sort of understand the lay of the land in D.C./NoVA to understand why that Expos stadium in Dulles / Reston would have been a complete and utter disaster. Just from a traffic / logistics standpoint, it would be impossible for most of the fanbase in the area to get to the games out there. That side of town is a gigantic traffic nightmare, ESPECIALLY in 2005 when the Expos came to town and there was no Metro silver line yet. The Redskins are either going to build another stadium at the RFK site, or they will move to the area around National Harbor / MGM Grand. They aren't going to build their new stadium in NoVA.

Virginia has professional sports teams. Norfolk Admirals (ECHL), Norfolk Tides (AAA baseball), and Richmond Flying Squirrels (AA baseball) are the highest levels of pro sports in the state.
Once you started referencing the "city" populations... probably got laughed at nationwide. The inconsistent, arbitrary city areas are local tax zones. EVERY business bases recruiting, advertiding and QOL on metro areas. ZERO exceptions.
Interestingly, it's not always the biggest city in the* state that gets the team's, either. Sometimes it goes by the size of the metropolitan area, as well, but look at Ohio. Columbus is the largest city, but Cincinnati & Cleveland have more of the major league level sports teams.

Once you started referencing the "city" populations... probably got laughed at nationwide. The inconsistent, arbitrary city areas are local tax zones. EVERY business bases recruiting, advertiding and QOL on metro areas. ZERO exceptions.
Interestingly, it's not always the biggest city in the* state that gets the team's, either.
Sometimes it goes by the size of the metropolitan area, as well, but look at Ohio. Columbus is the largest city, but Cincinnati & Cleveland have more of the major league level sports teams.
Yeah it's pretty obvious why VA doesn't have a pro team. Like you said, it's too close to the DC/Baltimore area. And there are no cities far enough away that are capable of handling a team in the NFL, MLB, NBA or NHL. I live in the Lynchburg area but have been to Richmond and VA Beach, but neither struck me as a pro sports city. My home state, PA, has two pro sports cities but they feel like major league cities when you visit them.

“DC isn’t technically Virginia”. DC isn’t Virginia in any way, technical or otherwise. DC was taken from pieces of Virginia and Maryland; then Virginia took their piece back. Like saying “New Jersey technically isn’t part of Pennsylvania”.
I believe that every city in Virginia can have a team in any sport Virginia is a east coast version of Texas as all 3 metropolitan areas can support teams in any sport for example Northern Virginia which is DC can have NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL and MLS Teams with 7 million people in it and Central Virginia which is Richmond can support NBA, NFL and MLS which has 1.2 million people and last but not least Southeastern Virginia which is Norfolk can support NBA, MLB, NFL and MLS Teams with 1.8 million people.

I really see Norfolk/Hampton Roads area 1.7 million people and Richmond area 1.3 million people both get NBA, AHL, MLB, NFL and MLS Teams to join Washington DC/Arlington area 7.2 million people.

Redskins are located in maryland but are still called Washington. I doubt if they moved the stadium to norva they would most likely keep the name. And as far as teams being too close. Look at California. There are teams all over that state. Florida has a few too. I understand population wise Washington would lose a lot of fan because I dont think anyone would root for D.C. over Virginia. Probably why they cant have a team. All the big money suits up in D.C. wouldnt allow that revenue hit to happen on their turf. Sidenote: if we cant be the REDSKINS, I will always vote PIGSKINS!!! It only makes the most sense out of any other name out there. We could still call them "the Skins" and the mascot and logo could be really cool. Plus we could revive the hoggetts!
