    I am going to be 50 in 4 months ... I have played guitar for more than 35 years now and I must say, young man like you teaching me stuff is really wicked. I was going to do a remake of Pink Floyd's Hey You and heard about the Nashville Tuning used in that song. Your tutorial is the best of them all mostly because your explanations are simple and clear without bells and whisels ... Thx so much for sharing, I really appreciate.

    I inherited a broken 6 string banjo, fixed it up and put some guitar strings on it, but it never had that 'banjoish' tone. I tried a few things, open tunings etc, but it wasn't untill I put a variant of Nashville tuning on that it actually started to sound like a banjo. The difference was night and day, I play it all the time now.
    I only replaced the E,A,D strings with higher gauge, My string gauges are: e 0.017, a0.013, d0.010, g0.017, b0.013, e0.010. Cheers, good vid.

    I'm from Nashville and i use this often. I used for DADGAD and DADDAD. It's nice if you are playing with someone that uses standard tuning, and good if you leave your guitar out to mess with people that visit. The gauges I use are 10, 14, 9, 12, 18, 27 wound. D'Addario makes a set or you can buy a set of 12 strings and use the smaller gauge. Have fun with it.

    I remember back in 1966 I saw a group called the Fendermen. It was the first professional group I ever saw. I was 17 at the time and had been playing for 2 years. The guy playing guitar had a Fender Jazzmaster and he totally freaked me out. He was so aggressive with it, his guitar just screamed and really floored me. I managed to talk to him later and was again really impressed how avant garde he was with his guitar. He told me he used Gibson Hi Fi strings (they don't make them anymore) which were chrome wound. They were used manly for jazz guitarists but he liked the big sound they gave. Because they were not made to be bent while playing he told me he tuned his guitar down a full tone.This gave him a more flexable string and could really make it scream. When the band played a song in E for example he played D. He transposed everything. With today's technology there are effects which can give you the same thing, back then they didn't exist.

      Wayne Speirs, Let me not be afraid to ask a stupid question. If the guitarist is tuned down a whole tone, he would be playing in D rather than E let’s say. But if he wanted to be playing in the same key as his bandmates wouldn’t he have to play as if he were playing in the key of F? That is to say, to play up one tone to make his sound be the equivalent of his bandmates?

    • @joeblough261
      @joeblough261 4 года назад

      I was wondering exact same thing! Seems like he'd basically have to capo the 2nd fret or play in F# (vs F) if he's a whole step down?

    • @jacquescousteau217
      @jacquescousteau217 3 года назад

      If the band was playing in the key of E ,and he was tuned down two semitones (- whole tone he-) he would have to play in F# .
      Conversely if the band was in key of D he then would have to play in key of E …

    Just FYI - D'Addario makes a high-strung (another name for Nashville tuning) string set that gives you the proper gauges so you don't have to use what happens to be lying around.

      Another way to do it is get a 12-string set and use one of the high E strings, one of the B strings, and the smaller “octave” strings for the rest of them. Set aside the remaining strings for use on a standard-tuned guitar.

  • @DelTangBrav

    A useful tip for those having any problems getting the strings for Nashville tuning is to buy a set for a twelve string guitar (a heavier gauge if possible) you then have one set of strings for the Nashville tuning guitar and another set for your regular tuned guitar. It saves money too,

    I always wondered what Nashville tuning was, and found out a while ago when I started doing some research on Pink Floyd's Hey You. I could never get a 12 string to sound just the way the studio recording sounded...then...lo and behold...I discovered Nashville tuning!
    I keep an acoustic strung up in Nashville tuning full time now, and it's excellent for several Pink Floyd songs (mostly off The Wall).
    Also sounds great playing higher bars like Em, Dm, etc!

    Hi Justin Guitar, any set of Nashville Tuning Strings will work and the Eb Nashville tuning is great because it's easier for me to sing the higher notes without hurting myself. If you take Nashville Tuning and replace the B String with an Octave4Plus 6 Gauge High B String then you'll be in an updated version of that tuning called "New Nashville Tuning" aka "Extra High Strung".

  • @kenmercermusic
    @kenmercermusic 12 лет назад +1

    It's advisable to tune downa semi-tone to ease the pressure on the neck of your guitar. The strings being wound tighter create alot of tension and may in time cause damage. It's also good to bear in mind that putting different gauge strings on your guitar will cause problems at the nut and the bridge, thinner strings will cut deeper into the grooves and thicker strings widen the grooves. If you care for your instrument be careful what you do with it.

    Hi there, this will work with all 6 string guitars because D'addario makes Color Coded Nashville tuning strings for Acoustic & Electric Guitars. Let's go to a new level, take a 12 String, use 2 sets of Nashville tuning strings & now you've got a Double High Strung 12 String Guitar.

  • @LeoNobles

    Just to throw in my two cents, I use 12, 16, 10, 14, 20, 30 (as opposed to Justin's 12, 16, 11, 15, 22, 30). I keep my Gibson LG-0 strung this way and really like it. Normally strung, the guitar needs a neck reset as the action is otherwise uncorrectably a tad high, but with this Nashville tuning, it's close to ideal for fingerpicking. Double tracked with my normally strung Martin D-28, the Gibson gives a nice high end that compensates for the bassiness of the Martin so you don't have to eq the bass out as much and lose part of the nice Martin sound.

    @johnhorneguitar Tuning down a semitone is a good idea to take the pressure off your guitar neck especially if it's in a hot room and then when you need to play along with someone or a recording you can easily tune it up to standard.

    There's also New Nashville Tuning. It's basically an updated version of Nashville tuning that instead of a regular B String there's now a B4 String which broadens the range & gives you extra high jangle. Of course you can use a 12 String Guitar with a Standard & Nashville Tuned Guitar to make some sections of a song pop out, which is rock-tastic. So the gauges for the New Nashville Tuning set (aka Nashville Tuning 2.0) go 9, 6, 8, 11, 16w, & 26w. The reason the 16 is a Wound string is because over the years the string technology has been updated to make wound strings as thin as 13 (eventually 12, 11, etc gauge wounds will be available) which are super strong, flexible, & durable thanks to their core wire being coated in an experimental alloy. The reason the B string is a 6 is because over the years Octave4Plus made plain steel strings thin enough (as thin as 5, 4, etc) to tune up to B4 on a 25.5 in Scale thanks to them being coated in an experimental alloy. Eventually they'll have an E5 for a 25.5 (or any) scale Guitar which means we'll create the Nashville Tuning 3.0 Set (aka Octave Higher tuning set).

    Well, I know for people starting it's easier to fret the strings as they aren't as 'tense' as in regular tuning, but I doubt that's a problem Justin has haha. The only other reason I can think of is because when detuned a semitone, you can do a low Eb, which isn't possible in regular tunings. Personal preference really. The band Weezer detune their guitars a semitone for every song they do. Wild, I know.

    thats not why he tunes down, he tunes all his guitars down one semitone from what he said, and the reason for that will be the sound and for me it's easier to sing to and get higher notes. It also makes playing a bit easier. A good quality guitar will never suffer damage from string tension in standard tuning.

  • @Olpaj
    @Olpaj 15 лет назад

    he wrote "drop C", it means your low E goes all the way down to a low C, and usually for lower tunings more string tension comes useful

    Nashville strings are just the high string set from a twelve string guitar. I have a 12 string which I don’t play much because I prefer a finger picking Travis pick style rather than strumming so I thought I would try this. I took the high set from my 12 string and strung them onto an older 6 string that I own. It sounds pretty good actually with a really high twangy pitch. However, if you have a 12 string you don’t gain much by stringing a 6 string this way. I tried finger style with the Nashville setup and it doesn’t work. The G is all wrong. So, I replaced the high G with the regular G string and it is actually really nice. You get a more jangly style picking sound. It doesn’t work for all picking styles though. Travis style picking with an alternating base is great but other picking styles sound all over the place. If your a strummer and you have a spare 6 string lying around, give it a go. If you prefer picking, keep the regular G string with the Nashville set up.

    • @chippchipp1
      @chippchipp1 8 лет назад +5

      +Ayy Lmao while it's played the same as a 6 string, it is harder to fret the notes (I.e. harder to press the strings to the fretboard), and it's harder to pick cleanly. But the Eagles were fantastic musicians, I doubt they'd have any trouble playing H.C. on a 12 string

      @@chippchipp1 The 12 String acoustic guitar is sometimes hard to play because with all acoustic guitars, they have thick strings, and a really high action. The 12 String Electric Guitar solves that problem due to the thinner strings, and lower action.

    I think you need a new cable or maybe just a new amp. I use a starmaker G-10 with my fender squier strat. I got it with me guitar which cost about 150-230 pounds so if you buy it seprate it should cost about 50 pounds maybe 100 pounds. also with picks I tend to go for thicker ones as the thin ones drag on the strings and are flimsy xxx

    You can go with a set of Nashville Tuning Strings for an Electric Guitar feel on an Acoustic and yeah Eb Nashville (Standard too) tuning is great cause singing the higher notes easier while you play, especially if a whole choir is strumming on an Electric Guitar (or Bass) while singing to add a bit of rock n roll to their song & they should do it with every song.

    Hi Justin. I know this is way old, but I just looked in on it. Why do you "normally tune your guitars a semi-tone flat?"

  • @TheSwampPicker
    @TheSwampPicker 11 лет назад

    Hey Justin (if I am so lucky that you read this). From all your videos I never realized that you tune down a semi-tone for your own playing. Why do you do that? I tried that recently and it does make it easier to play and bend strings on the acoustic, but it sounded... let me say, dull. Maybe it is because I am playing silk and steel strings (another attempt to make playing easier), and if I changed back to steel strings it would help. What strings do you use turned down the semi-tone?

    Hey if you replace the B String with a .006 High B made by Octave4Plus you'll end up with "New Nashville Tuning".

    This is for playing but for producers you could track and transpose to octave with software. Wish I had a spare acoustic.

    So I'm guessing you must have to re-setup your guitar if you do this tuning right?

    Hi Justin, D'addario makes Guitar Strings designed for that Tuning. EJ38H (Phosphor Bronze Wound Nashville Tuning Acoustic Guitar Strings), & EXL 150H (XL Nickel Wound Nashville Tuning Electric Guitar Strings). Now use 2 sets of those strings on a 12 String & now you have a Double High Strung 12 String aka "real Nashville 12 String".

    can you do a video about showing all your guitars

  • @gtrsuite
    @gtrsuite 6 лет назад +1

    Thats a heavy set for Nashville tuning you are using. D'Addario EXL150H Nashville gauges are 10,14,9,12,18,26w. The 9 at the third is important because of the tension at the third string.

    You could probably use the thinner strings for a 12 string guitar.

    If I have an acoustic and I'm just starting out writing songs, would Nashville be a good tuning to start with other than the usual Open tunings such as G and E?

  • @DCooper720
    @DCooper720 13 лет назад +1

    @robertrobin10 cause 1. that will throw off the intonation and 2. not all strings are tuned up an octave

    • @RockStarOscarStern634
      @RockStarOscarStern634 4 года назад +1

      Octave4Plus makes a .006 High B String but for an Octave Higher high E String it would have to be a .0002

    I used the light strings from a 12 string set but I can't get it to sound right. The high E string sounds out of place. I saw a guy on another video and he strung his G with a wound G so only the lowest 3 bass strings ( E A D) were an octave higher the high G B E strings were all normal gauge not sure what to do now..

      Don't worry Stu , I've seen 2 different versions of Nashville tuning . One has strings 4, 5 and 6 an octave up , the other has 3rd also . Jury's out which is right .
