  • How would World War I have been remembered if the men and women who fought and endured it had possessed 21st century technology? This short film provides a possible answer.
Private David Tindal fought in France with the Highland Light Infantry. While there he wrote eloquent letters back to his family in Scotland. tWWItter imagines what his messages home would have looked like if written on a smartphone instead of paper and postcard, and condenses a period of time that begins with his march to the front in late 1915 and ends just before the Somme offensive of July 1916.
    Many thanks to:
Alasdair Coates and his family for the loan of the letters written by their relative, David Tindal.
The Imperial War Museum for footage from the 1916 film, The Battle of the Somme.
tWWItter was devised and produced by Mark Gorton at Content 21, realised by Steve Clarkson, Paul Billington and Craig Leedham at Lion Eyes, and written by David Tindal.
Music details: "Spiegel im Spiegel" by Arvo Pärt, as performed by Tasmin Little (violin) and Martin Roscoe (piano) on the album "EMI Classics, Pärt: Fratres"

Very moving. My Great Uncle Gordon Blair was best friend of Sassoon who wrote memoirs of a fox hunting man. Gordon also died at the front. Stephen Blair

Incredible. Moving, innovative, and inventive. Congratulations on this brilliant film, and of course, thank you to David Tindal for his bravery in the endurance of the hell that he lived through, and his sacrifice.

What a moving story. What a great debt we owe to so many. May we as a nation never forget nor take our comfortable lives for granted. Thank you for an excellent film.

Hi Mark, thanks for taking the time to watch it and thanks for the comment. We felt using a modern media platform this way, really helped to get pupils to engage with what must seem to them 'ancient history'.
