  • Source NAT (Network Address Translation) in Fortinet FortiGate is the process of modifying the source IP address of outgoing packets to a different IP address before sending them out of the network. This is typically done to ensure that the source IP address of outgoing packets appears as a valid IP address for the destination network.
Here's a brief overview of how Source NAT happens in FortiGate:
    1. Source NAT is configured in FortiGate by creating a policy that defines the source IP address or range, the destination IP address or range, and the NAT settings.
    2. When a packet arrives at the FortiGate firewall, the firewall checks the policy table to determine whether the packet matches any of the configured policies.
    3. If the packet matches a policy that has Source NAT enabled, the firewall modifies the source IP address of the packet to the specified NAT address and sends it out to the destination network.
    4. The destination network receives the packet with the modified source IP address and processes it accordingly.
FortiGate also supports different types of Source NAT, including Static NAT, Dynamic NAT, and Hide NAT. Static NAT allows you to map a specific public IP address to a specific private IP address, while Dynamic NAT uses a pool of public IP addresses to assign to private IP addresses dynamically. Hide NAT, also known as overload NAT, allows multiple private IP addresses to share a single public IP address.
Overall, FortiGate provides a range of configuration options for Source NAT, allowing you to customize the settings according to your network requirements.
