In Indonesia you have something similair called the Wajang Dolls. My great grandmother came from Indonesia to the Netherlands after the independence. She had Some dolls with her and I played with them as a child. Great Asian traditions.

A great video on a wonderful tradition. There is also a great shadow puppet tradition in Indonesia. I have been to these Indonesian shadow puppet events, complete with torch lights, gamelan orchestra, and independent vocalists, all performing late into the night. Amazing, and seeing is believing, and this is a very worthwhile tradition.
