I am not all all religious, but these areas of serious historical significance really intrigue me. Aside from the pilgrimage, what function does this building serve? Are services held in it or is it highly protected from entry? It's amazing how well maintained it is.
From what I know you need to be very lucky or have good connections to be able to go inside. And the other aspect is that we pray in its direction to unite all Muslims around the world.
The religion was their to abolish idols and human sacrifice that was done even when Christianity was in the west. The east nead islam that rejected all the myth and united everyone. Inside was a idols like God of sun temples that was rejected to spread the message of one God religion.

The other one is in 7th heaven i.e Baitul Makmur (It was told by Prophet Muhammad that it is the twin of Ka'bah in heaven) where angels and citizen of Heaven circumbulating arround it just like we we Human and Jin circumbulating arround Ka'bah in Mecca. Both are precisely in line so that if Baitul Makmur fall, it will fall right on top of Ka'bah. Hence if You imagine the whole scene, it is kind of a big Pillar with 2 groups circumbulating it together kind like a Quasar star. That is where those Islamic hater got their term " Saturn Worship". 😁

Unfortunate His progeny the Arab turned it in to House of Idols. Finally Prophet Muhammad came and returned Ka'bah to its original intended function. Ka'bah we see today was rebuilt from previous structure that caught on fire during Islamic civil war (siege of Mecca) between Abdullah Ibn Zubair and Ummayad Dinasty Crown Prince Zayid in 683. Damage was quite severe so that Ibn Zubair decided to destroy remaining part and rebuilt It again. Later the ummayed reconquested the city and do few modification to Ka'bah. It is all about the Spot.

Allah also confirms in
Surat Al-'Ikhlāş (The Sincerity)
112;4
﴿ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ ﴾
( "And there is none like unto Him." )
Therefore there is no way that a Muslim can ever worship Ka'ba.
Instead, Ka'ba is just a direction or a landmark, geographically located in the center of the earth, to which we Muslims turn our faces while performing Sala'h (The best Muslim way of worshipping Allah).
Allah commanded in the Glorious Qur'an in Surat Al-Baqarah

﴿ قَدْ نَرَىٰ تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِي السَّمَاءِ ۖ فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ قِبْلَةً تَرْضَاهَا ۚ فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ ۚ وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ ۗ وَإِنَّ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ لَيَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ ۗ وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ ﴾
( "We see the turning of thy face (for guidance) to the heavens; now shall We turn thee to a Qiblah that shall please, thee. Turn then thy face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque; wherever ye are turn your faces in that direction. The people of the book know well that that is the truth from their Lord nor is Allah unmindful of what they do." )
The Arabic word used in Qur'an is SHATRAL MASJID AL HARA'M. The Arabic word SHATR means "TOWARDS" and not "TO", therefore the command in Qur'an to Muslims is to face "TOWARDS" KA'BA and not "TO THE KA'BA."
To be more explanatory Qur'an commands to face in the direction of Ka'ba from wherever we are on earth and Qur'an never commands to face the Ka'ba.
Moreover any idol worshipper would at no point of time, ever stand on the head of the idol he/she worships.
In our modern age, that position of earth, which we call as North and South were previously not the same, instead, present day North was called the South in olden days and present day South was called North in olden days. Even after shift in the names of directions, yet, Ka'ba stood in the center of the earth enabling all the mankind from all directions on earth to turn TOWARDS the Ka'ba and perform salah.

You can pray anytime anywhere in islam , but for the 5 obligatory prayers that every muslim should pray no matter what they have to follow the direction of kaaba , all muslims around the world collectively towarda one direction

I didn't even know it was a building.
I thought it was huge black stone-like monolith.
There were many such buildings in ancient Arabia, some were smaller and cut out from stone, some small rectangular/cubical buildings. These were pagan places of worship, which Muhammad adopted. The one in Mecca has been destroyed and re-built several times because of wars and floods. There is a black stone in the corner which is a meteorite most likely as we know that pre-Islamic Arabs used to worship stones (found in many sources) and meteorites are easy to find in the sands of the desert.

If Adam was the first Muslim in Mecca, and built the Kabba, and then Abraham went there with his on and re-build the Kaaba and called people to worship Allah (3:97, tafsir Ibn Kathir), why does the Quran in 34:44 said "And We had not given them any scriptures which they could study, and We had not sent to them before you, [O Muhammad], any warner" , or in 28:46 "to whom no warner had come before"?

Can someone explain what the lamp like things are that hang from the ceiling? I've seen them before and always been curious who put them there, when and why.

yesss people PLEASE start talking about it... we asked while was in Saudi on Hajj and we were told they were donated by people of high stature islamically or financially and may even have ashes in them. Therefore there is no way that a Muslim can ever worship Ka'ba.
Instead, Ka'ba is just a direction or a landmark, geographically located in the center of the earth, to which we Muslims turn our faces while performing Sala'h (The best Muslim way of worshipping Allah).

( "We see the turning of thy face (for guidance) to the heavens; now shall We turn thee to a Qiblah that shall please, thee. Turn then thy face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque; wherever ye are turn your faces in that direction. The people of the book know well that that is the truth from their Lord nor is Allah unmindful of what they do." )
The Arabic word used in Qur'an is SHATRAL MASJID AL HARA'M. The Arabic word SHATR means "TOWARDS" and not "TO", therefore the command in Qur'an to Muslims is to face "TOWARDS" KA'BA and not "TO THE KA'BA."
To be more explanatory Qur'an commands to face in the direction of Ka'ba from wherever we are on earth and Qur'an never commands to face the Ka'ba.
Moreover any idol worshipper would at no point of time, ever stand on the head of the idol he/she worships.
In our modern age, that position of earth, which we call as North and South were previously not the same, instead, present day North was called the South in olden days and present day South was called North in olden days. Even after shift in the names of directions, yet, Ka'ba stood in the center of the earth enabling all the mankind from all directions on earth to turn TOWARDS the Ka'ba and perform salah.

and Ibn Zubeyr moved it to southern part of Medina
Beside These evidence that prove Real Mecca is in Petra
1.The traveling Timing for Hussein Ibn Ali in the year 61 from Mecca in
Saudi Arabia Toward Karbala ( A place near Najaf in Iraq) does not fit at all, because the distance from mecca to Karbala is 1700 km and the journey took 20 days but camel normally can go 6 kph, So the Caravan could get Karbala in 34 days not 20 days
but the timing Perfectly fits the Petra to Karbala.
2.And based upon the early Islamic Books such as following sources Hira Cave, Taeef, Kaaba, Safa and marva mountain doesn't fit with those are existing in mecca but those perfectly fit with Petra :
