Richie havens was so overlooked. He played his guitar in such a unique way and his voice was so full of passion, his lyrics were truthful and meaningful. I am so sad I never got to see him in person. When I saw him on the woodstock movie when I was 13, I bought a guitar and never put it down. He is truly inspiring and under appreciated.
There is something fascinating about his playing. He strums with such ferocity and his open tuning (and of course, his abnormally large thumb) allows him to reach some colorful chords. He also sings with such passion. People talk all day about Hendrix’s Woodstock performance, but I feel like I enjoy this the most.
Ritchie Havens is a wonderful man that expresses that we need freedom now. Not tomorrow but we're on a crash course to exile. More than just another person, just listen.a musician with a message.
This rendition of this song - Oh my - so incredible! I have loved this song by the Beatles for ages. His interpretation has been on my mind for years as well. As a die-hard Beatles fan, it is hard to accept other artists doing their songs. Just sayin'. BUT...Ritchie Havens doing this song has secretly been a favorite of mine for a long time.
I have many fond memories of the summer of 1969... watching the first moon landing...camping on the shores of Lake Huron...but I only wish I had been there to witness Woodstock as well (just a few years too young). Ritchie Havens was the perfect opening!
Are U a fellow Michigander? I hear ya, I was 7 yrs old when Woodstock occurred, didn’t know anything about it until I was at least 10 yrs old-when I was exposed to all the popular classic rock in all its newly evolved occurrence during that era of the late-60‘s-early 70’s… Ahhh, music- a savior of sorts for a lil girl who spent many Saturday nites engulfed in it while listening through big headphones & reading album covers & all the lyrics and memorizing them!!! ❤🙏🌞
This guy is fucking awesome. Much respect his playing for 600,000 ppl alone. Probably more.. The lovely thing they made it free for everyone.. 😌 From the sky view. Theirs ppl as far as the eyes can see. Peace, love and music. Stay. Safe. All ✌

Thom Norris I heard it at nearly the same age+ I did not get in full at the time, yet I really liked it a lot
Richie wore that guitar out!
This song will never not be needed.

His Voice is So Visceral and Beautiful. The Words are so Powerful and Poetic
Richie was a badass but not flashy or showy. Amazing and quiet force of musical talent.
I agree this is an underrated performance. It’s certainly my favourite Woodstock performance apart from “On The Road Again”, by Canned Heat.

Always loved this since the moment I heard it. For him to open and Hendrix to close is pretty special.
i was always liked more this song over that so much popular freedom

I agree, Haven was amazing, but Santana stole Woodstock... Especially if Hendrix said they were the highlight for him!

What an awesome performer. That guitar must have been exhausted after his performance.
