    I worked in the Rookery from 1978-83. There were safes built into the interior hallway walls on some of the floors. I used to walk up the iconic stairway several times a day to the 7th floor. Back then the elevators were operated by union men and used the accordion gates and large circular up/down controllers.

      @@jcavenagh that’s so neat to know! Glad you shared. I love Chicago though I have not visited for a couple decades. Hope to get back in the not too distant future!

    The grand staircase's of those times were something else. Architectural craftsmanship of those times were on a different level. I have to check this place out next time I pass thru the windy city.

    The Rookery is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. I was in Chicago in thee early 2000’s when I ran across it while walking in downtown. I was absolutely blown away. The interior is really Stunning.

    Wow! I’m going to have to go see this building the next time I’m in Chicago! Sounds like a lot of other builders could take some lessons from this building. Over 150 years old, and still able to not only keep up, but excel! Fascinating! And beautiful!

    If you guys ever get a chance to walk past this building, check out the brick work towards the ground level. It looks like it could stand on its own for a million more years. It might be the coolest old building on LaSalle St.

    I pass by the Rookery everyday to go to work. I marvel at it constantly. The Rookery and the Marquette, which is on Dearborn and Adams are my favorite buildings in the loop. The architecture is amazing and stands the time of time.

    Note the "old Board of Trade" building seen in the background had to be torn down since the foundation was "unstable".

    We spent about 4 days in Chicago late year just touring around this area looking at buildings, so much history and beautiful old buildings. Stayed at the Hotel Blake, which is a nice old hotel as well.

    You didn't bring up that the atrium roof had been painted and tared over and restored in the 1990's restoration. I have heard many reasons why it was covered from to stop it from leaking to covering durring the war so it could not be spotted from a plane so it could not be a target

    As far as I'm aware, this is one of only a few of our beautiful buildings that you can walk in off the street and admire the interior. The others you need to be in a tour group if you don't have business in the building. When in Chicago it's definitely worth the stop. They have a little corner section for tourists that explains the various changes that have been made over the years.

    I have never been to Chicago, but I love the band Chicago Transit Authority, even saw them in person in San Francisco, Ca, back in the early 70's question Professor Socash does that count, would have like to see that building, but that will never happen. Remember be Safe and be at Peace, until next lesson see you then...

    Did/does it have poor ventilation? Lots of window A/C's in the 70's pics.

    • @norlockv
      @norlockv 3 месяца назад +1

      It did not have central air until 1992. It was built for natural ventilation. In the summer that could mean 95F in the summer, with 70% humidity. The a/c window units were a godsend.

    The Rookery must have been "overbuilt" if another floor was added, that's a lot of extra weight.......

  • @SamIAm-ww9gz

    It is an amazing building. The title is deceiving though, like a "bait and switch". Not much on the vault. Only a few seconds of quick pictures taken from some magazine. It would have been nice to have a tour comparing old pictures and a current day walk through. Another unfulfilling armchair creation.

    I'm not sure that resilience and innovation is what typically comes to mind when you think of Chicago.
