I was at that show!!!!! The first of many. I was a Junior at UCSB. We left after being at the show for 8 hours. The Dead was still playing and we could hear them from our Isla Vista apartment. 😍
This 16-year-old teenager wishes he had been able to go to this show but living on the east coast, it was impossible. I got my wish on 6/10/73 with my first rock concert and first Grateful Dead show. Is the UCSB Campus Stadium the current Harder Stadium?
When I was in college, literally garage bands played -- this is in the 90s. Small label. And yet, somehow in 1973 UCSB had the Dead. It's a devolution. Can only imagine...
UC schools are big, and have gotten big acts over the years. I went to UCLA in the late '70s-early '80s, and the dead played there multiple times, as did Bob Marley, talking heads, Bob Seger, and up & comers like B-52s. And the dead were still kind of not big at that point. They played the hollywood palladium the year before, which only holds around 2000 people.
Yall were truly blessed! My school VCU in Richmond had amazing clubs, house shows, etc. around it - so maybe that meant less cool shows ON campus but still in awe of those 70s shows like this, Duke, etc. Way better than a stadium!
When you upload a podcast/video to YT, and answer "Yes" to the question "Is this video made for children?" then your video becomes subject to RUclips's childsafe restrictions, meant to prevent kids from watching excessive RUclips. IOW, a "Yes" answer doesn't affirm that it's okay for kids - it means adults can't listen while doing something else in another browser window (at least, on a smartphone). It's a restriction, not an affirmation. Based on my experience talking to people who upload jam band concert footage (it only seems to be hippies who don't understand the RUclips question/settings), you're response to this will be, "But of course this video is good for kids!" in which case, I'll smile and nod, and try again in a couple months. In the meantime, I'll just have to put something else on in the background while I work in another window. It's no problem (there's plenty of good stuff for me to play in the background), but it would've been cool to hear the rest of this episode!

Phish, Chick Correa, Arlo Guthrie... those were 3 bands who played our small college (Oberlin) when I was a freshman in 90-91.
The Grateful Dead is the best garage band of all time
