  • Godzilla Raids Again is a 1955 monster movie directed by Motoyoshi Oda. It has Gojira return to fight Anguirus. A giant dinosaur that ends up losing to Godzilla, and the causing the entire country to devise a plan to stop the monster. This movie was darker and more serious than the movies that came after. It’s also the only other black and white Godzilla movie after the original.

    This is our “Jason Doesn’t Appear until the sequel, and gets his hockey mask in the 3rd movie” moment, as a lot of people forget that the Godzilla we follow for pretty much all of the Showa era was a 2nd individual of the Godzilla species. In fact, I head canon that the 1st G was an old male, while the 2nd was a younger individual. As to explain the bulk and behaviour differences.

      Heres my headcanon
      1954 and Showa Godzilla: same headcanon as you
      Heisei, G2000 and FW: most likely pre-adults
      Also a headcanon id like to imagine is how affected Godzilla is from the nuclear bomb
      1954 and Heisei was prolly at the center of the explosion.
      Showa Godzilla was probaly really close to the center but somehow regenerated. Therefore explaining why he started as skinny in 1955 but slowly turned bulkier
      Godzilla 2000 and FW were likely far away from the center of the explosion, the only reason they mutated is because they fed off radioactive material which explains why they look animalistic and not deformed

    On GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN: I spoke about this in depth a few years ago. Personally, I think the deeper metaphor is not about Nagasaki, but about the Cold War as told from the perspective of the common man. RAIDS is notable for being a Godzilla movies where the human protagonists are not scientists, soldiers, or reporters, but everyday working class people. These same people have their lives affected by a power struggle between two massive juggernauts, even though that struggle has nothing to do with them. It's ultimately a tale about people caught in the crossfire. It's not the only Godzilla movie to do that, but it holds the distinction of being the first.
    On Godzilla being indestructible: For all intents and purposes, he is. You're right in saying that he's killed in the first movie, but remember that the thing which kills him - the Oxygen Destroyer - is a new kind of ultimate weapon, the only thing that can rival a nuclear bomb. Also remember that it doesn't just kill Godzilla, it also kills every living thing in the immediate area around him. Other than the OD, nothing else can touch Godzilla. He shows signs of being hurt by things, sure, but he's never hurt to the point where he retreats or even slows down. That essentially does make him indestructible, unless you exert so much force against him that everything around him is destroyed as well.
    On the Showa Series being silly: I don't disagree - though the two Mechagodzilla movies were definitely a return to serious storytelling - but I just see that as being part of the series' charm. Godzilla is one of the few characters capable of filling whatever role he needs to fill without losing sight of his personality. Besides, he may as well be the hero because we all root for him anyway.

      I don't mind a little intelligence... but more from monsters like Ghidorah and maybe Mothra. Godzilla himself should definitely be more animal. I find the movies I like the most are where he's a force of nature. He isn't a hero, he isn't a villain, he will put down bigger threats but not because he likes people but because they threaten him too. He is completely ambivalent to us in the same way a tyrannosaur would be to a bunch of mice. If he steps on our burrows it isn't out of malice but apathy.
      It is why my favorite movies are early Showa, Heisei and a select few Millennium. Honestly, this is part of why I hated the Legendary reboot. I felt lied to, that ad campaign made it look like Godzilla would be a threat again and then he behaves just like he did mid Showa era right down to being praised by the media as 'the savior of the city' and swimming off into the sunset. Gag.

    I think the Heisei continuity would have worked better if Godzilla's Return (Godzilla 1985) was a sequel to Godzilla Raids Again (not "Gigantis the Fire Monster" which was almost like a totally different movie), which, of course, was a sequel to Gojira (Godzilla King of the Monsters). It would have made more sense (to me at least) and not changed too much as a result. Plus, they'd still skip all the goofy/silly stuff that resulted from Godzilla vs. King Kong and onwards. Really the only changes it would have made to the Heisei continuity would be: 1. Godzilla erupts from an iceberg instead of a sea-volcano at the beginning of the film; And 2. Anguirus would be "canon".

It’s the first time Godzilla has ever fought another monster. And the monsters actually feel like monsters here rather than giant goofy animals in more recent films. The characters feel like they actually matter to the story too and it’s still kind of scary like the first one. After this movie the Godzilla movies just completely dropped in quality up until destroyah if I’m being 100% honest. I _still_ don't understand why some hardcore G-Fans out there are so *insistent* on distancing Godzilla away from real-life animals...when it was real-life animals that served as *inspiration* for HOW Godzilla's been PORTRAYED/CHARACTERIZED in films _like_ "Raids Again" and even 1998 (🤔). Is it a desire to see this giant monster character as something so _outside_ of the norm that *clashes* with normalcy and disrupts it?

So what if it's black and white, it's a fun film, and these creatures should always be portrayed as animals, it makes far more sense, to do this film like this, and I wish they had continued down that path. The problem was more to do with foreign audiences, or more specifically I think had to do with hollywoods perception, that these were silly monsters, and really lacked an understanding of what these films were about, as much as how much money they could make through distrbution. I think that had the most influence on what would later be shown in films like Megalon, and the like. IMO.

  • @iandanielcassidy8126
    @iandanielcassidy8126 Год назад +2

    Personality:
    The Second Generation Godzilla undergoes gradual character development throughout his film appearances. In Godzilla Raids Again, King Kong vs. Godzilla, and Mothra vs. Godzilla, Godzilla is a destructive beast that comes ashore in Japan and destroys everything in his path and indiscriminately attacks other monsters. Starting in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Godzilla begins a transition into an anti-heroic character as he begrudgingly joins forces with Mothra and Rodan to fight off the evil space monster King Ghidorah. In subsequent films in the 1960s, Godzilla is often depicted as the anti-hero doing battle with much more malicious and dangerous creatures such as King Ghidorah, Ebirah, and Kumonga. In the film Son of Godzilla, Godzilla discovers an infant member of his species named Minilla, which he decides to raise as a son and train to take up his mantle. Godzilla's loyalty and love for Minilla eventually lead to him becoming a primarily heroic and sympathetic character. In the films of the 1970s, Godzilla is depicted as an actual superhero who arrives in Japan to fend off evil monsters from outer space such as Hedorah, Gigan, and Mechagodzilla.
    According to Mothra's Shobijin's translation of Mothra, Rodan, and Godzilla's conversation in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Godzilla only "hates humans because they hate him," suggesting that Godzilla never had any truly malicious intent but was only reacting to constantly being attacked by humans. Rodan later agrees with Godzilla's statement.

    For years, I pondered what these movies were until the summer of 1983 when Showtime did a creature feature thingie with four Godzilla films, including "Gigantis the Fire Monster". When I caught the film on TV, I discovered the answer to the mystery that baffled me for 18 years...

    I agree that Godzilla shouldn't be an unstoppable force, but I feel like he shouldn't be completely animalistic, the movies shouldn't trying to make a deity like some of the new ones do. But there is a balance that helps make Godzilla a character without going too far, like in the heisei era. Godzilla acting like an animal with a bit of "humanity" inside is what works best for him in my opinion.
    Though it's true that raids again is one of the most underrated entry in the series I don't think it's because it's not goofy, but just because it's not overly bombastic and more simple that the more convoluted sci-fi plots we gets later down the road. I guess that's why some people don't like 2014 too. It seems nowadays while most fans don't want Godzilla to be goofy they still want him to be over the top in a superhero movie kind of way.
    Actually with the monster verse now, it seems some people down right bash the whole shows era Wich is a shame, since it helped build the foundations of the whole franchise. The movies of that era had flaws, but they made Godzilla an icon for better and for worse. The original will always be in it's own league, but I think that is without embracing more outlandish stories and allowing the franchise to just have fun and expand, Godzilla wouldn't matter as much as he does today, and would have fallen into obscurity and remembered as a good example of 50's sci-fi that only cinephiles could enjoy. It's sad that some of the fandom completely dismis a big part of the character's. I'm not saying that's what Klayton is doing. I'm more talking about the "fans" who consider anything older than shin Godzilla to be trash and especially the showa era. Godzilla is a symbol because of what Honda choose to represent in the original, but he is an icon because he was able to represent everything and become its own entity wich very similar characters were able to do. Godzilla can be fun, scary, epic, tragic, serious and goofy, very goofy. When he is played seriously he is incredible, but when he is goofy he still has so much heart to him. And as I said while the original can't be topped, I think as far as sequel and reboots go, both serious Godzilla and goofy Godzilla are on the same level, and one can't exist without the other.

    Heisei Godzilla's Personality: In the films of the Heisei era, Godzilla is an animal with at least semi-sapience that stumbles upon human civilization without any malicious intent, only destroying man-made structures or obstacles like buildings when the humans provoke him, or, when dead-set on arriving at a certain location. He is also somewhat curious, as he did not immediately attack Mechagodzilla, rather attempting to communicate with it, and looking more confused than angry when Mechagodzilla used its Mega Buster Beam. Only then did Godzilla retaliate.
    This is a stark contrast to the Showa era where Godzilla was formally presented as a destructive force of nature without any malicious intent initially in both Godzilla and its sequel: Godzilla Raids Again, before transitioning to a full-on both anti-heroic and heroic figure later on as the era progressed.
    He is shown to have a vengeful side in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah as he directly attacks and kills the soldier who left him on the island to be mutated, and in a solemn moment even sheds a tear as if in lamentation as to what he has become. Before Godzilla destroyed the Shindo Heavy Industry headquarters, he hesitated upon sighting Yasuaki Shindo in a moment of recognition, and even tearfully roared before obliterating him and the building with his atomic breath.
    Godzilla is also shown to care a lot for his adopted son Godzilla Junior, as he protected him from SpaceGodzilla, and grieves for him after transferring energy in a failed attempt to revive him during the events of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

    While underrated in the eyes of many, and it's not in my top 10 Godzilla movies, Raids Again is definitely a gem and one of the most important Godzilla movies for two reasons: 1. It introduced us to the second Godzilla of its kind and would lead the rest of the Showa era films. 2. It gave us the tradition of Godzilla vs. another monster. There's more I can say, but I'll leave it at it's good to see more love for it 👍

It was about twenty years later that it became commercially available again, and I jumped at the chance to own it. I get what you're saying as far as how the tone matched Honda's original, but the movie does suffer from pacing issues. Overall though, I enjoyed it, and was glad to have a chance to finally catch up with it.

    Due to Godzilla's size, super-strength and regenerative abilities, he is invulnerable to most forms of conventional attack. However, Alien Weaponry has been shown to be strong enough to wound him with Gigan's Buzzsaw and claw arm ripping into him and Mechagodzilla had gunned down Godzilla severely wounding him.

      @Darthzilla99 Год назад +2

      It was an accident, but he ended up liking the effect and kept it in like you said. He was the type that cared if he likes the anesthetic of the effect and not necessarily if the effect was realistic or matching continuity.
      A good example is in Frankenstein conquers the world. When Baragon eats the horse, an interviewer asked Tsuburaya why not super imposed a real horse. Tsuburaya told the interviewer that the puppet horse was more interesting to watch instead of the imposed horse.
      Another example is in Ghidorah the three monster. He didn't mind the puppets not matching the suits of Godzilla and Rodan since they added comedic value.

    • @johndelye3402
      @johndelye3402 Год назад

      @@Darthzilla99 I was about to mention his fondness for what hipsters would call special effects failure moments. In the case of the horse,a puppet is a more realistic solution. You see something real moving in the foreground reacting to Baragon approaching it,whereas the best composite shooting might have still looked obvious. For an example I would give the shot of Muramtsu carefully walking alongside a kaiju in the Lawless Monster Zone episode of Ultraman. With HD it looks like the kaiju is footage on a wall sized screen next to the practical set he's walking in.

    This movie’s biggest claim to fame is creating Anguirus who is an iconic monster within the series that appears in lots of video games, comics and other media with Godzilla (usually as an ally).
    I think defeating Anguirus halfway through Raids Again was a mistake and the ending would’ve been more thrilling if they were trying to bury the two monsters while they were fighting.

    its weird you make this video because i was literally just recently wondering why this film is so unknown and underrated.
    I watched it for the first time a couple months back and I have to say its probably the only film in the entire series that depicts the battle between the two beasts as well, a battle between beasts, and is quite unique in its brutality, for this series at least.
    The humans (while a side-factor and not as crucial to the story as say serizawa was in the first movie) are quite likeable people, and I agree that when the pilot died it was actually very sad. Very few instances in the series can really say the same.
    I think the movie in general is due some credit simply for being the one that spawned the series to begin with, and the formula of monsters fighting other monsters which became the mainstay of the series (though it could be argued that this was mainly due to the success of KKvG).
    There are some things i think are handled poorly (most notably the scene where they literally just play footage from the original movie) but overall I think it is one of the more standout outliers within the series, which may unfortunately be why it is so easily forgotten.

    Origins:
    The Second Generation Godzilla is another individual of the same species as the original Godzilla that attacked Tokyo in 1954. Like his predecessor, this Godzilla was presumably awakened by an American hydrogen bomb test in the South Pacific, causing him to absorb huge amounts of radiation and driving him from his natural underwater habitat.

    I’ve long thought GRA is deeper than its reputation suggests. The theme, as I read it, is a new generation of post-war Japanese trying to live in the rebuilt country, while Cold War tensions simmer. There’s a competing sense of hope and despair in the human story. Godzilla and Anguirus are kind of guest stars in their own movie, but they are essential metaphors of the real world threats.

    Hi Dragoncurve. Love your review of this movie. I think it is underrated as well. In it, Tsukioka and Kobayashi find a cave on Iwato Island. Strange vegetation is found growing outside of it and they go inside to explore. They hear Godzilla's roars and it chases them out of the cave. only for it to try to grab at them while they are hiding in a crevase, but before Godzilla could grab them, Anguirus appears from the sea and battles Godzilla.
    Before Godzilla and Anguirus appear in Osaka, Anguirus attacks Okinawa, with the US military battling it. I also added in a backstory where the characters of Kobayashi and Tsukioka were once Japanese air force pilots during the war.
    Instead of using the flares to distract Godzilla from coming to Osaka they use them to lure him into a trap. They fire two explosives into his legs, similar to a plan used in Heisei film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 (1993). But because of Godzilla healing factor, he just stands back up, just as Anguirus appears and they do battle in Osaka.
    Instead of killing Anguirus in Osaka, he manages to flee and Godzilla follows him to the snow covered island. He is killed there and the Japanese military manages to trap him in ice.
    If you have any ideas to make the film better, please replay.

    I've seen it, too. I think you could also make an argument for Showa fans to appreciate Raids Again as well as it was the first film to use a kaiju opponent--so all the Showa battles wouldn't have happened without this one. I appreciate your arguments for the realism of this film and some others, but I'm good with G as both serious and the sci-fi kaiju battles both.
