    This is the most humanized we saw Phil imo.
    It shows him question his loyalty to the mob he’s always bragged about. He realizes he wasted 20 years of his precious life and got nothing for it. Surprisingly Butchie reassured him, the same guy who gave Phil up.
    It’s also interesting to see his POV with how he feels he’s being pushed around just like his ancestors were and is hell bent on revenge. Which leads to him being too trigger happy and bloodthirsty.
    It’s pretty interesting because Phil is always shown as the antagonist. Here we see his POV and tbh, I sympathize w him. Did I mention the guy did 20 years?!? Not a peep!

    Despite Phil being an evil horrible bastard in every way, I really understand him in this scene when he says "I compromised everything". Guy spent 20 years in the can while his peers were all living the high life, nearly half of his adult life. Never got his revenge for his brothers murder, etc. Obviously all of these things are his own fault one way or another, but I can understand what he's feeling, "compromising" everything, things never being the way he wants them. Compromise is necessary in life of course, but I don't want to be 66 years old thinking I compromised everything just to please others.

    • @chakrazulu2106
      @chakrazulu2106 6 лет назад +4

      They were all 46 actually. Gene said he would be fifty in three years which means he would've turned 47 that year....Phil was celebrating Billy's 47th birthday posthumously so Billy also died at 46 but I do think it's symbolic of death. Episode 2 is called 46 long it's about the death of "this thing". From the rat on the news to Brendan stealing the truck after being warned not to. If the mobsters can't keep their mouths shut and underlings don't obey there is no Mafia. Hence Chris "why even have a crew speech". Tony's 47th birthday was the symbolic death of his dominance. He loses the fight to Bobby and even after apologies Tony still goes on about "a few years back before I got shot". Because he's desperate to maintain the idea of being dominant he was trying to make himself believe he was more than anyone else. When he couldn't convince himself he sent Bobby to kill that guy which Bobby had never been asked to do before. That was Tony's way of re establishing hierarchy and dominance.

    I'm here to celebrate what would've been Frank Vincent's 87th birthday (April 15, 2024). He loved his family more than grilled cheese on the radiator.....

    That was our name originally, Leonardo. But many years ago when my grandpa came over from Sicily they changed it in Ellis Island to Shinebox.

    Frank vincent was an amazing actor and this show was iconic because of its excellent cast of fine actors who knew their craft and played it to perfection.

    Phil should've made the "it doesn't make a difference" kid right there on the spot.

    Sean O'Neal of The A.V. Club wrote that Evidently Chickentown "ranks as one of the show's sharpest and most effective musical moments, somehow capturing the vexation of a New York mafia guy with the words of a British punk who's complaining about flat beer and cold chips." Genius from David Chase.

    Phil makes a good point. People show no love for integrity anymore and cast you aside not only when your there but out in the world your nothing

      You ve just pointed out why, unconciously, i do root for Phil, eventhough his actions are despicable, as well as Richie Aprile, they were real to the thing, not paulie, not chrissy, not tony, sil was, due to his loyalty and steady will to make things work, from running a club to murder and everything in between. Richie made things for the mob and they gave no respect in return, and yes Richie didnt respect nobody, but from the modern lot, same with Phil, did his time and there is this glorified crew bending everybodys arms, playing dog eat dog, unlike Johnny sack, unlike Jackie sr. Tony thought he was a Ceasar in the flesh after made boss. And the cruelest truth in real life is that anybody out there wants to be a Tony soprano and treated as such, therefore ppl with integrity are cast out and ppl with balls aren t taken seriously anymore. they are treated as noise, literally.

    Amazing how a song like this can make a good ending scene a historical one. Exceptional flow to this show.

    How perfectly, darkly ominous was the chosen song, Evidently Chivckentown, by our local bard, Salford's John Cooper Clarke? That and Tiny Tears by the Tindersticks were IMO the best/most-appropriate-for-the-scene two tunes used throughout the entire series.
