Some great advice Mark re doing it for yourself and ignoring naysayers. At 65 I decided to get a grip of my 10 year weight gains a few years ago by using a calorie counter app and a lot of cycling (went from around 105 kg down to 80kg at 5'11" over 6 months) and here's a sample of a few supportive family comments - "Aren't you a bit old to be doing all this dieting" - "Don't lose any more weight, it makes you look ill" - "Why are you doing this to yourself, it can't be much fun, you shouldn't worry about it at your time of life". Fortunately I was more interested in my health than what they thought. To be fair I did lose a bit of muscle along with the fat so I got into weight training to build it back. Weight's crept up a bit and I'm now maintaining at around 85 - 86kg. Sure, I could still do with getting rid of a the love handles and firming up a bit more so a way to go. Definitely not going back to the way I was feeling carrying all the extra weight and I do feel more in control now.

“It’s not what you eat between Christmas and new year that counts, it’s what you eat between new year and Christmas that matters” is one of best sayings I’ve heard. The other is never tell anyone that your on a diet always say Nutrition. No Matter how much weight you have lost or how healthy you get if the uncommitted see you eating a 1 cookie or donut. And know your on a diet they’ll be straight over with age old “so your off your diet then”. No I never was on a diet I changed my nutrition because “I was advised too” or “ I have no energy” “ I fancied a change”. I’ve know this because I’ve been through it.

Listen to your legs at the very beginning. I did my first-ever run six months ago. 2 kilometers. I was surprised that 1) the Nike Run Club coach in my ear didn't have me walk-run; and 2) my shins were perfectly fine. The soreness in my quads came on the next day, and I didn't run that day or the next to give my body a chance to repair itself. I did my first 5k run eight days later. It was worth taking that first couple days off let my body figure out what was happening to it. I still have the same formula: Soreness = recovery (often a recovery run); injury = don't run. Figure out what's happening.

As someone a bit OCD I used to get obsessed with writing out a plan with all the numbers, reps, sets, weights, which days to train which muscle, which muscles to train together etc. I found this just distracted me from actually doing it. Now I just train randomly, I don't count anything or monitor anything, I don't take notes or make a journal, no diet or training plan. All I do is that I try to make sure I train every day and that it is a worthwhile workout, so reps to failure etc. That's it, and I'm a 1000% better off for it and looking forward to where this approach leads. I don't have anyone or anything that is motivation, I train alone at home as there is no way on this earth I will go out after work to a gym.

I used to have a beer with dinner a few times a week, but decided to stop because my wife doesn't drink (makes it easier) and I know how bad it is for me. My parents are what I like to call "silent alcoholics" as they have multiple drinks daily and can never go more than a day without a drink (they sometimes do, announce it to the family, then have a beer with the following meal)
Anyway, the point of my story is I'm really similar to you. Every single time I go over they offer me a drink, followed by a "oh right you don't drink anymore." I'm glad I wasn't an alcoholic, or it would have been impossible to quit and maintain a relationship with them.

Thanks so much for the encouraging video Mark! I've been running consistently for over 2 years now. I must say I was very self conscious when I 1st started and was very embarrassed to run in the street thinking that people were staring at me and judging me. Now 2 years later I actually look forward to running on sidewalks along busy streets purposefully so that people will stare. At the risk of sounding snobbish, I now get a thrill in being stared at by everyone knowing full well that I am a rarity in my city bc very few are out running, whether its 90F (32C) in summer or 27F (-2C) in the depths of the winter going against a freezing headwind.
I wish all those getting started on their fitness journeys the very best. Just start small to stick with it. I began my running journey by maybe doing 6 miles (9.6 km) per week just a mile or two at a time. I am now up to 50 miles (80 km) per week and I do that consistently. I'm no one special and not even fast but I am very dedicated and very regimented with my training schedule. So it can be done with proper discipline.

I wouldn't take financial advice from someone who is always broke, so I won't take health/fitness advice from someone who lives a very unhealthy life. Having a husband and family who don't share my passion for fitness, but fully support me, makes me incredibly lucky. Now I just need to prioritize my diet and running, to improve my consistency.

I also lift three days a week and do daily cardio (which right now is 45 minutes a day on my Schwinn Airdyne bike puts me at about 16.2-16.5 miles daily). Anyway the last month or so my will of steel has been tested and I’ve been on some binges. In the end I haven’t gained but also haven’t lost so I’ve been stuck at about 197lbs for a while (I’m 6’1”). I weigh weekly and I’ll go up 4 lbs but the week after I’m down 5…etc. I find that sometimes - oddly enough - after I way overeat I seem lighter the next day like I lost weight. Anyway your videos on what you do have been a help and I appreciate your work. I’m in the old colonies…Boston area.

I lost 80 lbs over two years on a paleo diet, but I'm convinced the reason it worked is (1) there are smart things about it, like cutting out sugar; and (2) it provided an organizing principle that forced me to pay attention to what I ate. But I don't think paleo *in particular* mattered much at all. Now I mostly eat what I want, but I track my calories every day. It works because it works for me.

Just got back from snowboarding and I am feeling a bit sore all over. Keen to get back on with my training, its only been a week off but I made good progress last year and I want to keep up that momentum. I'm trying to be sensible and give myself time to recover but these 'dead spots' between more focused periods are difficult, I feel like I am drifting, and historically that is what got me in trouble in the first place. Still, hopefully smart enough to know when it is right to pull the trigger. I am exhausted after a 36 hour journey of cancelled flights and a long night in airport seating. The fact that I am struggling to sit up straight is probably something worth paying attention to lol.
Love the motivational messages, solid workable and realistic is way more effective than the typical inspirational guru nonsense that most people profess.

Coincidentally, I started back on the wagon on Thursday. I'm on day 3/7 of logging at least 30 minutes of _something_ per day. Once I get to 7/7 I'll make it 7/20 or something. Eventually maybe I'll be on 321/365. 2022 was my lowest activity year since 2016 and I want to fix that.
I haven't yet decided if the 30 minutes/day is just an average for the week, but that would be sensible to allow for rest.

Thank you Mark for your uploads and no BS approach. I found your channel last year and got into park run because of your better than average video. The last year has been incredible. 40 park runs, 6 half marathons and 1 London marathon later I’m now ready to take it to the next level this year. I have the Rome marathon in March and a duathlon in May so far in the diary. Looking forward to what else the year has in store. Wish you all the best and good health as always 💪🏻👌🏼

Hi Mark just caught your latest video update, I love your channel and the no nonsense fitness support you deliver, As for the mince pies I have trained all the way through the Xmas and New Year period, and just back from my usual New Years day morning run session. watching your video after and I realized I had just one mince pie left in the cupboard, so I ate it. I will be 61 next summer but have another full year of racing and training planned. And another year of being amusingly informed by your excellently put together videos. Me and Mr Cruise who is an influence I have to admit to share the same age and although I am not suggesting I am just like him we do as you say share similar traits of just keep going and going and never let the naysayers put you down, with their "Oh aren't you too old for all that stuff now" Well I don't jump out of planes as he does but you get my meaning.. Look forward to all your updates in 2023. Have a great New Year. David.

Happy new year boi. Some of my nearest and dearest stated that theyre going on a crash diet on 1.1.2023. Theyre intelligent professionals, or perhaps the latter. The struggle to get in shape or whatever starts the day one considers to embark on the self improvement journey. Why my relatives gave themselves a stay of execution with diet and exercise ill never know.
Good luck to everyone on this platform hoping to lose weight and or get fitter. Nice work Mark.

Brilliant as always. I would like to point out that counting calories in an app - which you criticize - does work for some people, likely because it raises their awareness of what they eat. I used it to get from 235 lbs back down to race weight at 190 lbs effectively. Is it bothersome? Yeah, a little, but it worked for me.
