I always thought my pets were just annoying and needy following people to the bathroom. They are just saving us from demons!
It makes so much sense, right?
@@milascave2 there ya go
As a Christian, i love learning about jewish demonology and tradition in general. Every so often i study parts of the talmud online. Thank you to both of you for making this easily and readily available.
The typical historical mindset from Christians about the jews, is that they had secret knowledge but were unable to do anything with it because anti-semitism. I agree that the Jews have knowledge about our god, and we may live our lives differently and worship God differently, but I know that I can learn a lot from Jews and Jewish customs.
I'm very thankful for you Dr Sledge, this channel, and everything you've done for my intellectual and spiritual walk.
You know what the Talmud says where Jesus is right now? Judeo-Christianity is a sham and the two religions are directly opposed to each other.

Blasphemy!

32:00 I would be totally here for a 'horror' movie where the humans are freaking out because oh gosh it's a demon but the demon's just getting increasingly frustrated because he took a wrong turn trying to get some coffee and now he's visible and people are screaming, plot resolved by them realizing "oh it's just a guy i guess" and going out for drinks

ESOTERICA, awesome video I loved it
Smart and gorgeous. The guest was interesting too!
GOATed crossover
So GOAT you could confuse a toilet demon by showing them this video
Especially if you are watching it on the toilet 😂
Thank you so much for this video! I truly loved the conversation. ❤❤
perhaps that snake story is talking about men who are only driven by the snake that they carry, just saying. Nice video over all, love it!
Omg, two of my favorite people together. Best crossover since Infinity War!
God bless you guys; I love these types of videos. You really help me connect with my Judaism in ways I never expected Justin.
Love this place.

Epic collab 😎
I look forward to seeing you two collab on the OTHER holy text, the Silmarillion.
Amen amen amen! 😂
Fantastic conversation! I look forward to seeing future collabs with you and Miriam!
A: today I fully grasped that Lilith is an Old One.
B: I am somewhat wearied of mythologies and old stories all redacted and diminished by being viewed through a Christian lenses. So refreshing to hear tales outside of that context.
C: truly, demons have been misrepresented and ill-served by Christianity.
Amazing talk! It's so incredible that I've watched twice already, and I'll watch it again. Lovely Miriam
"This video is truly enlightening! The content on this channel is always so deep and inspiring, exploring the mysteries of the universe with remarkable clarity and depth. Kudos for shedding light on such fascinating topics!"
I think Pennywise would qualify as a bathroom demon. After watching 30 years ago, I still expect the dead lights every time I pee at night😬

So much fun this chapter. I loved it. Thanks.
What an interesting interview! Splendid collaboration between Dr. Sledge and Ms. Anzovin. I guess the Jewish Talmudic traditions are akin to the Islamic Tafisr, Hadith, Fiqh, and Sufi traditions. As a Muslim, it gives me the inspiration to explore my traditions in depth as well. Really liked Miriam's approach of one page a day. Seems manageable. Really love your channel Dr. Sledge. Peace, thoughts and prayers.
The piano piece stunning I see why you chose it….
This was a really fun conversation. I'm glad there is room in the Esoterica channel for this type of content and even more glad to find another Jewish esoteric (? Is the Talmud actually considered esoteric?) content creator
I hope there's always room on the channel for smart, fun conversations.
On why Lilith gets Tuesday (50:00): I think it may be because Tuesday is associated with the planet Mars and Samael the angel of destruction/death (at least in the Hygromancy of Solomon!). It would make sense given that Lilith and Samael would be paired up in Kabbalistic lore.
This was my oopsie whoopsie as I accidentally said Agrat not Lilith. Once again, Lilith trying to steal Agrat’s moment 😂.
@@MiriamAnzovinIt was my whoops too because you rightly said Agrat when you first began the story! 😅 (I think the planetary correspondence would still hold, given that Samael has the same function as her posse of destroying angels.)
this tradition reminds me of the Islamic jinn especially the fixation on bathrooms which is one of the jinn's favorite places to hang out
Epic crossover episode!
Love the collabs. I'm always finding new people to follow.
And, goy that I am, have to say it: just LOVE Yentl Anchovis! Sorry, I couldn't help myself. She's funny, kind and good spirited! Her story about making a stand against anti-semitism, that really touched me. So humane! But what she does in combination with her last name... shot for open goal. Go with God, sister, you're beautiful, in every aspect.
I have long wanted to convert to Judaism very badly. Though my intentions and motivations seemed to be acceptable when I spoke with a rabbi, I was informed by him and many others online beforehand that my pre-existing agreement with my spouse to raise our children in their faith precludes my conversion, and over time I have come to accept that it was probably not meant to be in this lifetime. One reason was the perhaps selfish, childish hope that I could one day be one of those venerable looking old fellows bent over a crinkly leatherbound book of Rabbinic commentary or obscure Kabbalistic lore written in Hebrew, with something substantial to tell you about it. I had reasons that were less puerile and daydreamy, like realizing over the years an astounding percentage of my favorite thinkers and artists are Jews. And I really like the Talmudic tradition, that Jews leave space in their theology for disagreement, community consensus, layered understanding, updating, “loopholes” and so on. The fact that there doesn’t seem to be an eternity in an oven at stake in the game of life, also comparatively chill.
Anyway I appreciate y’all’s work and knowledge. You contribute to the edification of your fellows who have big questions and whatever your personal beliefs I do see that as part of the Lord’s work. Big preesh and blessings
I will never be annoyed at my cat again for needing to be in the bathroom with me 🤣Loved all of this, I wish Miriam had more long-form content, she is very engaging to watch, short-form just doesn't work for my brain 🥲 Please have her back, conversations like this always inspire my thinking and writing!
I’d be delighted to return! And I have started to post some longer(ish) form content, the learning sessions between me and my chevruta, and I’ll continue to try and balance short with longer form stuff! I appreciate your feedback, and may your cat ever keep you safe!!

Fantastic! Miriam is delightful, and I am now going to follow her work elsewhere! Thanks for having her on!
Just a wacky thought: perhaps the reason Agrat can dance on the roof on Tuesdays is because the Rabbis were in contact with their colleagues in India: Tuesday is Hanuman's holy day (along with Saturday, actually!), and because Hanuman is a major demon-slayer/queller/tamer (particularly of female demons!), perhaps they just knew, "Ah, he'll take care of her." ;) (My friend and elder, EliSheva Nesher of AmHa of beloved memory, had an interesting experience with Hanuman that I spoke with her about on several occasions, and so I offer this thought in honor of her...I'm sure she'd love your channel, Justin, and also Miriam's!)
Now this is a FASCINATING THOUGHT! Wow, I gotta learn more about this, thank you for this comment!
And for your kind words :)
@@MiriamAnzovin I mean every one of them! I am looking forward to delving further into your videos soon! (I enjoyed the one on Trans Day of Visibility very much indeed!)
@@MiriamAnzovin In fairness, I should probably give a bit of context here--I hope you don't mind! ;)
Both EliSheva and myself are polytheists, so we're used to experiencing lots of different Deities and types of divine beings on a semi-regular basis...and she taught me much about Lilith that I have never forgotten, and in fact use pretty regularly (especially lately--long story!)!
While she stuck pretty closely to Hebrew and Canaanite Deities (e.g. Anat, Asherah, Rahmay, Ba'al, etc.), as was the tradition of AmHa that she learned in Israel and brought to the U.S., she had occasional dealings with other Deities based on who (amongst humans!) she happened to be hanging out with at the time; she had good friends deeply involved with Norse Deities, for example, and was just as enthused a giver of toasts at blots as anyone.
She had Hanuman show up at one point rather unexpectedly, amidst practices totally unrelated to Him, and because Hanuman has been part of my own practice fairly regularly (despite my own focus being much more toward Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Irish Deities...and also sometimes Shinto--it's a VERY long story!), this is something we talked about on a number of occasions between whatever else we were doing...like her giving lot-casting readings, which have been the hands-down best divination readings I've ever been given by another person. (She has two books on the subject available from Amazon, which I highly recommend!)
So, needless to say, both of us are HUGELY biased in thinking rather cross-culturally and internationally on a pretty much default basis, and so that would color our reflections at any given time. She passed on January 1, 2023, and a truly amazing person that I will never forget (and one of several such people I've lost in the last few years) became a legend and an Ancestor rather than "just" an Elder...thus, I should probably clarify I can't really speak for her exactly, but I can easily imagine this conversation happening, and if nothing else, she'd just smile and chuckle and perhaps nod, and say something clever and incisive that would begin in her inimitable style with, "So, Phil, what you're saying is...." (One of the best instances of such was when the end of that sentence was, "...we have the same taste in men?") ;)
I'm absolutely certain she'd adore you, Miriam, and I can only imagine being a fly on the wall for the conversations you'd have!
But, back to the main subject: I'm also sure that the Rabbis are just as likely to surprise us, and certainly more often than many would assume...so, why not? Hanging out with Indians and talking techniques for demon-quelling? Why not? Stranger things have happened!
Demonology is one area where syncretism kind of runs rampant an awful lot, so...who knows?
I love your guest! I'm at 13:ish and have hardly heard a coherent sentence, because her words bounce around with so much self knowledge behind them that their shiny energy distracts me! This happens sometimes when I hear a good poet read. I will return when I can listen better. It's too early in the morning for me to pay as much attention as this deserves!
I think most religions would seriously benefit from some form of Talmud.
Most religions do kind have something akin to it - the canon law literature of the Catholics or Islamic hadiths / tafsir literature
I think informally many Protestant churches do it with their literature. I grew up Church of Christ and even though they’re bitterly against the “doctrines of men” in a theological way they nonetheless have a “canon” of human authors whose interpretations of the Bible they read and support to the exclusion of all others.
what a great guest, fantastic interview!
I’m not Jewish but I think that Jewish mythology and scholarship to be extremely fascinating. I also like the fact that studying history and tradition from a “secular” academic perspective is actually quite common within Judaism. My family is from a Catholic background and despite the fact that they have interesting traditions in their own right, but I don’t think there’s any way to approach Christianity without bad faith.
Its true, the perversion of Christianity began almost immediately after Christ's death in ignoring the role and contributions of Mary Magdalene. Since then it has just been twisted over and over to suit political and personal agendas of power and greed, I don't think much remains of the true intended message in what is called Christianity today. I also have a Catholic background and find studying Jewish mythology/tradition and stories of the old testament far more fascinating!
@@lucyjane3803 Yeah I agree. I mean, Christianity was very political from the get go. Jesus chased money lenders off the temple and said it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to inherit the kingdom of God. He was clearly challenging the people in power at the time (both Jewish and Roman). There are also ways in which Christianity is very much a product of the highly patriarchal society it originated from. The same goes for Judaism, I guess. I just like the fact that that there is room within Judaism to analyse scripture from non-divine perspective, to approach ancient literary texts from a sound academic perspective. In Catholicism you have to believe that the bible is the word of god and all of it is supposed to go unchallenged, most even go as far as believing in a literal Adam and Eve. I know there are more progressive types of Christianity and I have attended some of these groups, they are truly doing great work to move Christians away from conservatism. But they still require belief in God, something I just can’t get behind.
cool guest
Great Colab Dr Sledge!!! How good is the Talmud English translation on Sefaria?
It's solid!
22:30 - this reminds me of that time Maimonides said your stool should be mostly liquid if you're aiming for optimal health.

@TheEsotericaChannel Maimonides is my spiritual historical esoteric mystic doctor philosopher if I had to choose one, just NOT my doctor of choice now for internal medicine. I added more to it since then, just wait for Saturday night when ep 1 drops!
I had to go to the toilet during the toilet demons part 😂 No wife holding her hand on my head now
Bet they watched the video over your shoulder 😂
The view of “nuanced” demons that get that title by being “simply” not angels but still supernatural is wonderful. The term has a lot of cultural baggage these days. Finding another word that isn’t wrapped in another cultural mythos will take a bit of thought for me.
27:55 so they're similar to the daimon which exists, if you had to place, between the, if you will, celestial and chthonic realms, neither fully angel nor fully human, nor demigod, nor demon, but daimon? Akin to the intermediary interstitial liminal tutelary guardian guiding spirit being of myth, assigned to every person? That entryway said, what an entrancing introduction and memorable inspiring guest is Miriam Anzovin on the Esoterica channel hosted by Dr Justin Sledge (neo paracelsus trismegistus?) and a truly delightful title and jaunt through Jewish esoteric learning! I wonder now how they are related to the Goetic demons, who in ceremonial magick adaptation, correspond to the 72 angels of the Shemhamphorash! A full circle sort of inquiry and serendipitous arrival of this wonderful episode in our laps seemingly out of the blue! Each mentioned being could absolutely have their own who's who episode!
That was great, thank you.

One of the few things I know about Asmodai is that he is a king. At least according to Goetia. I much prefer the Jewish version of the demons. I'm not sure about the angels..... I'm also loving that this smart lady is acknowledging that Lilith has existed pre Jewish modern beliefs. I believe she is a wind spirt of sorts? At least that is my experience. Yet she is much more also.

Demons are… Pokemon. I guess that checks, they were inspired by Yokai right?

I LOVE ALL ESOTERICA videos!
I listened to the demon who headed the 180k army of angels of destruction. I never heard anything like this before…until I realized maybe i had in the forms of Freyja or Morrigan. Basically Goddess leaders of dead warriors. Thought?
I don't have any hard evidence, but the weird association of Lilith with Fridays and Tuesdays may have have to do with the Babylonian weekdays associating Friday with Ishtar, a goddess associated with many violent and negative behaviors, and Tuesday with Nergal, a god associated with death and disease.
It's not Lilith it's Agrat bat Makalat
@@TheEsotericaChannel Oh, sorry.
27:58 - These demons remind me a lot of djinn, just kinda having their own lives and societies that don't usually interfere with ours.

… also as a Navy Veteran, we have/had “Yeo”-man, personnel-man. Interesting 🧩
I hate that I writing this 2days after premier. Regarding why maybe Tuesdays was free for Agrat bat Mahlat to do her thing, I think it maybe cuz Tuesdays was ladies night. Tuesdays was the day of the week when men where banned from the markets and bathhouses so that women could move at their leisure. I dont know how far back this tradition was practiced, but I'm pretty sure it was the case half a millenia ago. That's my best guess. Thanks for all the scholarly content. Ur the man Dr. Sledge.
The description sounds very similar to the fae to me.
Daemon, Fae, Yokai...
If dogs are good in the jewish tradition, and Islam is a supposedly a gnostic off shoot of Judaism and Christianity where did he get that dogs are evil? I mean he (Mohammed) pulled tonnes of antisemitic stuff, but that one really seems weird to me. I only ask because she said dogs were playing as a sign of prophets arrival
It's mixed on dogs, especially the concept of the "vicious dog" which goes on to paint dogs as mostly bad in haredi circles
I believe that there is a bathroom demon in my room right now
Does this video make anyone else want a Jewish EDM cover band called Daf Punk?
How come the pius ones become corrupt and the not so perfect ones fair better?
