18XX... the natural ending destination for euro gamers. Some get there after 2 years, others after 10. Truly the best of the best. Other games are just briefcases. 18XX rusted all my euros. 😁
"If you like TI, you should try 18xx" - this is so true! My husband's favorite game used to be TI3 before we discovered 18xx and got into the genre! A lot of people who haven't played think of 18xx games as more like Euro games, but I've found that there's a lot of mean interaction in our games that make them feel more like an epic game of Twilight Imperium (just with no randomness). I also love the timing in 18xx games and how that's a player driven thing. I’m glad it sounds like you had a good intro to the genre! Since they’re so player driven, I think whoever you play with has a huge impact on if the game experience will be enjoyable.
I dove into Euros 20 years ago and was delighted by the journey, and when I finally dipped my toe into 18xx I felt like I had arrived. 18xx has all that a great game should have. Unfortunately, my group of family men lack the time to invest in these. If your crew has any AP, know that they initially take much longer than advertised. Only the experience that comes with regular play brings the time down to what is printed on the box.
Thank you for this video! Great to know something about this area of the hobby that I've never seen anything about before. It's a good reminder that there are many types of games that may appeal to someone that they may not have realized existed.
18cz and 1846 are my tipples of choice. The lower player is a good thing for those. Cz has a great 2 player option and 1846 has a very passable one by the designer. Many run better at 4 or more and for this complexities at time commitment getting the numbers can be an issue. Defo recommend the two mentioned for what it’s worth. Good video.
18xx games are also the most thematic games I’ve played. Do you feel like you’re in the game when you place a worker? Probably not. Do you feel like you’re holding a gun when you roll a die in some combat game? Nah. But buying a share in this company and watching how it performs over the course of a few hours rather than a few years in real life, yeah it feels real to me. Sure the track and operations are abstracted but still. Really happy to see this. 18xx is a genre that deserves a wider audience.
I recommend starting with 1846, the race for the Midwest. It is faster to play than 1830 and most other 18XX games and sets up easier. There are other "introductory" games but 1846 has more replayability in my opinion and even has a two player version, see board game geek for the one page rules by the developer, Tom Lehman.
What is the name of Matt and Andrew's gaming group in the Cleveland area?!? I'm interested in playing a lot more 18XX but my current group isn't into the genre.

Yet simple smart games like Blood Rage Lite (could be found, for free, in the BGG's Blood Rage's variant section) get the job done - testosterone fights allowing for deep enough strategy and tactics. Complex (often convoluted or fiddly) games are rarely played by players being on the same page regarding the rules. As for me, long games are only interesting when all players were able to keep the balance for long. Other than that, if the game is long, either everything is decided in the end or we already know who will win while still 2 more hours are left before the end of the game. Saying that I've never played 18xx, but I've played train games eg. Irish/Iberian Gauge.
Cultivating new players can lead to more enjoyment in the long run than acquiring a new 18xx title. The big thing is to get them past a new players' natural caution. I was playing a game of Steam Over Holland with a new player who was running two companies she had started early. They were both running out of steam and there was little chance of turning them around. I could see this and asked if she wanted some advice. I told her to dump every stock she had in them, accept that she would lose the capital she had in the presidents' certificates and par a new company high. Anything she had lest over she should invest in other companies. Well she hit the ground running and bought two of the best trains running and was shortly earning more than her old companies had together. Then everything clicked for her and she started tokening my runs into the stone age. %&*#$@!
Somehow I can't help to feel offended, which means I'm right and you are wrong. Fake news! Euro's are better :-p Thank you Shira for the editing and perfect timestamps:)
First rule of 18xx: If everything seems to be working out better for you than for the other players then you're already losing. You just have to work out how.
If there was an 18XX game based on the Transformers comic series “Hearts of Steel,” which featured steam engine Autobots and Decepticons, I’d be down. But, in general, theme is pretty key to me, hence why my little collection’s two big box games are Scythe and Cthulhu Death May Die. Tho, come to think of it, an 18XX game where The Elder Things and Great Race of Yith are organizing subterranean supply lines of train like Shoggoths during their ancient alien war on earth… Well, that would be another theme that would get me into the train game genre.
Also, I highly recommend checking out Mechanic Studio’s forthcoming Insectitrain, which is a realization of the Hearts of Steel Insecticons that combined to form a pretty rad lil train.
The two guests are making their subjective argument about why it's better. That's not click bait. It's fact the two guests at least feel 18xx is better and that's good to know more about an area of the hobby I've never seen anything about before.

I went in on the Shikoku 1889 kickstarter. It'll be my first 18XX, but it seems like a genre I would like a lot! Can't wait to try it out!
Stay tuned for a full playthrough
I need to get it!

Your best video yet!
The first question you should always ask yourself is "How do I afford my next train"?
My first 18xx was the first, 1829; which I purchased a little over 46 years ago. I now have several dozen and enjoy them very much.
Lol, love how Alex just strolls on by XD
After watching this video I'm thinking about a late pledge for Shikoku 1889. Would be my first 18xx game.
If it’s available I might late pledge it myself!
Good choice

I've always preferred"Tile, Token, Run, Rust" for my T-shirts.
Plan lunch and enjoy the ride. Whether you win or lose the experience of the game is interesting.
Welcome to the rabbit hole!

Love big games and started 18xx looking months for 18OE. Found a sealed copy somewhere and was immediately hooked
18xx are just the best.
Where did you get those track tile trays? Love to have some of those to organize my 18XX games. Thanks

This has to be one of the games we play sometime I come up. I have always wanted to play one.
Always happy to play, just tell Jesse to ping us
It's the theme. Maybe if they were able to cover it up with cute forest creatures.
Do we have a play through of 18 Chesapeake in the works?
Nice try ;-)
Will see how I will give this a roll in the future. Hardest thing, find minds alike.
I'm curious about the track tile holders in the video.. they weren't part of the 18Chesapeake KS campaign were they?
Etsy got you covered ;)
I’d check rails on boards. They have the best stuff, I even use them for non 18xx games.
Might be interesting to compare an 18XX game to something like Maglev Metro with the perspective of your average modern boardgamer.
These 18xx games look interesting but why no digital versions on IOS or even PC?
I'm an East side Clevelander looking for 18xx players! Are you open to another player occasionally?
never heard of this...I was thinking about Anno 1800...

Haha XD Some are amazing - but the are both worth exploring!
When is the ks?
❤❤🎉

18xx is multi-player solitaire where anything anyone does affects every other player.
🐐🥁👍
Isn't basically everything better than Euros? ; )
Absolutely! Excluding thematic Ameritrash where winning is based on a random action like rolling dice.
useless clickbait . there is nothing better or worse its all about what you like and what your friends will play with you .
The two guests are making their subjective argument about why it's better. That's not click bait. It's fact the two guests at least feel 18xx is better and that's good to know more about an area of the hobby I've never seen anything about before.
careless comment
Naw, just because you getting pay doesn’t mean it’s the best
. . . What in any way, shape, or form makes you think this is a sponsored video from the 18xx conglomerate? Do you also think the Earth is flat?
