Born and raised here a drive away from this rodeo and other amazing things Texas has to offer. Hope you have a great experience while you're here. You can spend your whole life in North Texas alone, and still be blown away by new culture and food. This area is less about the old school cowboy, and more about and mixing pot for all cultures and I am so proud to call it my home and honored you show interest. I've lived here my whole life and I've been to 1 rodeo ever when I was a little kid. That just speaks to how much there is to do. Between the never ending amazing restaurants owned by people from around the world bringing their food to the US, the sports atmosphere that's home to the most valuable sports franchise in the world several years running, and the most diverse population of happy people you will you meet, DFW is a jewel.

Our biggest Rodeo is here in Houston. Plan on being in Houston on February 27, 2024 until March 17, 2024 for Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. All those friendly people working the Rodeo are all volunteers. We all feel honored to get picked to be a volunteer. You have to apply and hope to get picked to be able to be part of the volunteers. My favorite is the calf scramble, where teenagers get to Rangel a calf and drag it to a square to win a college scholarship. Loads of fun to watch kids help one another to win the scholarship.

Californians, no matter where are the rudest most self centered, self important, the world revolves around me people on the planet. And mind you Bakersfield is a red town. And it's still that way. Mexicans and blacks have shot crime through the roof. Punks think residential streets are for racing on. They've killed numerous innocent people. The valley has LA style crime now. And all of this has happened since Newsom slithered into office.

There are some amazing bridges and swamps along that route. My family used to drive from Houston to Sarasota, FL every year. Great camping, too, if you can cope with the skeeters. (Some native peoples used to execute people by tying them to a tree overnight and letting the mosquitoes drain them out. Seriously. The anthills are likewise just as bad -- as every child in the area learns the hard way, eventually.)

The Houston Rodeo is in February. They were at the concession stands and the show pens, Each night they have a different music act. The tickets for that are sold weeks in advance. Other towns hold rodeos at different times of the year. You can find a rodeo schedule online. In Mesquite (Dallas area) they have a rodeo almost every weekend (for sure May to October). Although it is playtime for most people attending, the rodeo is for ranking in the championships and the stock show is for students to win scholarships and prize money.

Football is in Autumn, so you'd get some early school games, late season Rodeo, mid season seafood boil. If you do the math you can fit tons in.

I'm lucky I live here and get to share the rodeo experience with friends and family. If you are coming to visit, make sure you check the dates, because this only happens for like 3 weeks in the year. It's really amazing, and if you BBQ, you've got to score some tickets to the cookoff and if you love livestock, you'll definitely feel at home. A lot of the proceeds of the event go to scholarships for kids.
Also, thank you for agreeing that eating after someone is not cool. I've known my best friend for 26 years now, and in the entire time I've known her, we have never eaten anything together like these guys often do. If there is one food item, and we're sharing, we just tear it in two or pour it into two cups, and if that's not possible, you drink on the opposite side of the cup!

I know everyone wants boots and a hat when they go to Texas, but then they have sticker shock. Low end decent cowboy boots start at around $200 with most being in the $300-500 range, but they can be much more depending on how well you want them made. A great cowboy hat starts around $100 but if you want top quality, you are probably spending $300-500. Its for this reason there is a very big second hand market for vintage cowboy wear where even kind of worn out boots that are 40-50 years old that you would still have to pay to be refurbished can go for $100+.
If you want top quality stuff that is actually well made in TX, you are probably spending at least $1k on great boots and a hat. That being said, you can find generic ones for far less and they will get the job done as needed, but most of that stuff is made in South America or Asia, so not exactly very Texas.

If you want to check out both a rodeo and a football game your time window is narrow, Rodeo season begins in March and ends most places in early September, football season begins at the very end of August. My suggestion is look at both the national and state level rodeos scheduled in Texas at the very end of August or start of September. I think they have a big one every year in Ft Worth. You can catch a football game everywhere, IMO the electric atmosphere is far better at major college football games such University of Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas Christian, Southern Methodist, Texas Tech, University of Houston or Louisiana State University but decide and get good tickets months ahead, far harder to get good college tickets than pro. You could also check out the Texas Rangers baseball.

I'd be willing to help you out with your Louisiana planning. If you are wanting crawfish, know they are seasonal. Typically only farmed February through June. The price drops after easter. Also, every town has a festival based on what they are known for, so depending on when you are here, there may be something cool to visit.

The thing I really like about Jono, Jolly and Loud Guys channels is they are so respectful, complimentary of our American culture.
Can't say the same for some if the other foriegn based reaction channels that just seem to revel in subtkely nit picking, tearing down and criticizing American culture. Seems like some petty jealousy.

Meh who cares? Part of what makes americans cool is that they arent uptight like italians (mr z) or uncle roger. (i do love uncle roger tho) If you wanna slap pizza on a stick then do it. If you dont like it thats fine too, its just a novelty. We dont care if you "appropriate" our dishes or if someone doesnt like it. It comes off as disingenious sometimes because no one can be positive about everything. I actually much prefer watching the high schoolers try it because they arent as filtered/dishonest beacuse they arent risking their livelihoods if they offend someone across the planet.

Well to be fair, there's plenty wrong with American culture that other countries can point out, without being disrespectful. I find most channels are respectful. Some are more aggressively annoyed by things, but I get that they are that way because they expect America and Americans to be this shining example of awesomeness - when we are just regular people like they are not some best in the world at everything we do people. Know what I mean?

Just remember, Texas is bigger than France. Houston and the Gulf Coast is very different than El Paso, Big Bend, and the Desert SW of West Texas, and is yet different from Dallas/Fort Worth the midwestern plains of Central Texas and Amarillo in the Panhandle. Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, and El Paso are all very different, and fairly spread out. Were i planning a trip, I would probably start in Austin and move southward, maybe trying to end in New Orleans, depending how much travelling you want, and how much time you have.
Houston has a lot to offer, but it isn't a very touristy town and a widely spaced out city, being larger and more densely populated than some entire eastern states. The coverleaf interchanges and massive highways are very impressive, but don't alleviate congestion, so unless you want extensive tours of the highway system, I might skip Houston. Time on tne highways might be better spent travelling. (The band The Grateful Dead once suggested that instead of Houston, you might as well go to New Orleans since it's relatively close and better for visitors.)
