  • After a lot of feedback, I decided to post a walk-around of our DIY pure water cart. This is not a comprehensive how-to, but hopefully with these close-ups, and a little explanation, you'll be on your way to your own build. Parts we used below, not a comprehensive list, quantities will vary based on your needs. But this will get you started. And of course, your results may vary, so you assume your own responsibility.
    The dolly was used, and craigslist or facebook are usually loaded with similar ones for cheap.

    Looks awesome I have a self build system too, going to be upgrading it soon with pump etc. May I make one suggestion though, add another pre filter and stick a 5 micron sediment filter before the carbon block, as you currently are its possible sand and grit will get into the carbon block and reduce its life a lot quicker (Or worse if you have a carbon block filter thats 10 microns or more, it may let small particles through into the osmosis filters and reduce their life too). And sediment filters are cheap as chips, not that carbon is massively expensive but theres a difference that makes having sediment better.

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751
      @glintwindowcleaning1751  3 года назад +4

      That's a good thought, thanks! I decided to go with one, as it is 5 micron, after checking manufacturer filter change recommendations. Systems that have two pre filters go every 6 months, and systems with 1 are every 3. Because the filters are close in cost, it was better for me to save the weight and initial cost and keep it simpler.

    Love your system! Thank you for the video. I do have a question though. Everything about your cart build make perfect sense to me except the discharge water. Why is there discharge water? Why would that not just continue into the rest of the filter system?

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751
      @glintwindowcleaning1751  Год назад +5

      This is a natural part of reverse osmosis, and the reason RO membranes last longer than any filter or DI resin. Rather than trap all the contaminants, the water is split into purified water, and discharge water full of the leftover solids, which gets released continually. If it were trapped, your membrane would be ruined much faster. So if you check the TDS on the discharge water, it's much higher than even your incoming water- it's all the solids that have been separated from the pure water.

    one quick question, it looks like you are running your DI resin tank upside down, is that just so it will drain when you turn the water off? I have a homemade DI tank that I use for washing my car but I don't currently do any pre-filtering which is quickly destroying my resin. We have extremely hard water here in Phoenix, so I'm starting to look for solutions to save me on resin costs. Plus I noticed after about a yr, the resin starts to give off a fishy smell when using it, so I can only guess that's from leaving water sitting in the tank after use? this solution make perfect sense to me, but I also need to be able to produce about 2 Gallons per minute, to run without a reserve tank.

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751
      @glintwindowcleaning1751  2 года назад +2

      If you're referring to the waste valve, it's because RO is not exactly a filter. Filters catch debris and keep it inside, where RO separates the water into two groups- purified and reject water. The rejected water contains all the solids, and it has to go somewhere, or else the RO membrane will be plugged up and ruined in short order. Hope that helps!

  • @user-gy5sx1qw6m
    @user-gy5sx1qw6m 11 месяцев назад

    does increasing the waste water flow just increasing the flow coming out of the system? Does it change the tds coming out of the RO membrane? thank you

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751
      @glintwindowcleaning1751  11 месяцев назад

      A few things happen when adjusting waste water. To understand better- more waste water flow=less pure water flow. But it also means less contaminants builds up in the system. That's why most systems built like this will recommend flushing wide open for 20 seconds at the beginning and end of use.

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751
      @glintwindowcleaning1751  2 года назад

      You could use quick connects if you want but it's not necessary. The curve in the pipe going from the carbon filter to the ro is just enough slack to remove the ro caps. You can also undo the threaded fittings since pex pipe can swivel on it's fittings, many don't realize that so maybe I'll mention in a follow up

    I have 2 dumb questions.
    What’s the main benefit to having 2 vessels vs one? Just simply more use before having to change filters? Or are there other benefits?
    Could this be permanently mounted to the wall of an enclosed trailer rather than a portable cart, and not leak everywhere? Other than the release water of course.

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751
      @glintwindowcleaning1751  Год назад +2

      There are no dumb questions, just dumb people 😆
      The benefits are more pure water per minute. The RO vessels only let so much water through per square inch per/time, so more inches=more water. The longevity of all the filters will be the same gallon wise, but less timewise, as that is mostly dependent on the amount of water put through them.
      This can all absolutely be mounted somewhere permanently! It's really a matter of preference. A van mount does increase the amount of hose required in many cases, and more hose=more restriction=less pure water per minute. It just depends on your own needs. There's also the danger of freezing in cold environments like mine. I like to be able to wheel it inside for winter!

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751
      @glintwindowcleaning1751  Год назад +1

      I might ad that with a van mounted system, the flush water just needs to be routed outside the vehicle.

      That's going to depend on the membranes you go with. I would do a little research on the percentage of reject water produced, and size it accordingly. You can usually download a spec sheet of a comparable membrane to see. One nice thing about a valve is that you can shut it off for transport so it doesn't leak everywhere.

Is there anything I can do to increase the water pressure??

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751

      A booster pump is good, but the most common mistake is using too much wfp hose. Keep the wfp hose to just enough to run your pole, and use garden hose for the rest of your length, this is the cheapest way to boost flow. It works amazingly, because the pressure drop is exponential for every bit of length of the small hose.

      That's correct, just a little bit. The spec sheet for whatever RO membrane you use should have amounts of waste water and pure water produced. I've found i can eyeball it based on those ratios. Let it flush wide open for 20 seconds when you first start and when you stop, and that should really take great care of your membranes.

    I just came across your video. Awesome job! I'm new to all of this and these may be dumb questions. I did have a couple questions. Is there a reason you opted for the smaller
    10" x 2.5" pre filter and housing instead of the 10" x 4.5" and then the same for the DI housing you went for the 10" instead of the 20"... Is there a benefit to the smaller sizes or is bigger better? I'm ready to start ordering everything and putting it together. lol

    • @glintwindowcleaning1751
      @glintwindowcleaning1751  Год назад +2

      Weight was the biggest factor. There's other factors though. The prefilter definitely doesn't need to be any bigger, it needs changed quarterly regardless, and a carbon filter is not very restrictive so it can be the smaller size. As for di, the only advantage to larger is longer time between di resin changes. Our water TDS is mostly in the low 100s or less around here, so I get excellent di life as it is, no need for the extra weight. But if you live in an area with really high TDS, the bigger di canister might be wise.
