Kevin, your presentation and description of tobacco(s) is outstanding. The way you express and your analogies are just so good. I was standing there with you on the mound with my eyes peeking just over the top of my ball glove as I was taking in that leathery musky smell and it took me right back to my days of playing ball. I think that analogy just sold me on this blend. As always, thanks for the great review!
I'm new to your channel and I like the way you present things. By the way, where I live, Blue Jays are called "Camp Robbers". Anything edible that isn't watched or covered at the campsite will be stolen by those rascals. 😊
Wow James, thank you so much for this feedback and encouragement, it really means a lot to me as I continue to think of future content for you all. Thanks again! :)
Your mention of the smell of leather and Baseball takes me back to the many hours of catch that I experienced with my Dad. We threw the ball around so much I became quite good at fielding balls. It sure was a lot of fun and a treasured memory. I remember throwing the ball until the last bit of dusk went away.
I tried Plum Pudding. It’s really good! I went to Va-Pers before trying this one and I think that helped as to going from an aro to an English. You are spot on with your review. It’s quite complex but not overpowering.

Many thanks for the videos. If you have not tried it before may I recommend a Lakeland style blend called Cob Plug by Samuel Gawith. A firm favourite of mine. Ah - Whiskey (Whisky). What a clear comparision between tasting (Ardbeg Ano, Ugeadail, favorites) and Tobaccos is a great clue. There are many tastes and nuances to tasting flavors. I see why you work to recommend various tasting notes. What I think is very interesting is that the general flavors are sometimes easy to find while the more sublte notes can be more difficult. They say we all have differrent taste buds. 😀
We all have different palates, and some are more discerning than others. Yes, the nuances are the challenge, but they are quite rewarding when you learn to detect them.
I've just ordered a tin of this after so many yt pipers have been so positive about it. After watching your review, Kevin, I'm truly excited to try it! 😁 I've been binge watching your videos for the last week and really enjoy your style. Keep up the good work!
I love dates. If you ever watched Pee Wee Herman’s movie, Big Adventure (or something like that) there’s a scene with a dinosaur at a gas station in the desert. That shot was taken at Harley’s on the road from Los Angeles as you’re heading into Palm Springs. As a kid we would stop at Hadley’s for their delicious Banana Date Nut Malted Milkshakes. The dates all came from the date-palms there in the desert around Palm Springs, and they had many of the most delicious varieties of dates available for purchase. I’m excited to try this blend. Thank you for sharing. Ardbeg is great, but the younger ones taste too medicinal for me. The Ardbeg 18 seems to be just about right without completely breaking the bank.
I’ve never had the pleasure of trying Ardbeg 18! I bet it’s amazing. I do have their entire core range of bottles tho (wee beastie, 10, An Oa, Uigeadail, Corryvrekan). You’ll enjoy this blend, Mark :)
Great review of one of my favorite blends thats not an aromatic. After years of pipeing, I've just recently branched out to virginias VA's and english blends, do not like burley other than in Blood Red Moon. You have an uncanny ability to put these flavor analogies into perspective. When you said dates it finally hit me you know he's dead on with that, and then again with sun dried tomato and I've been trying to put that in words for months now. I've really come to like the regular Plum Pudding more because of the spicier notes in it. My tin of PPSR was so wet I fought hard keeping it lit so rubbed out a good bit of half the brownie and have been much happier with it, somehow that kicked the spicy flavor up a notch too. Thanks for a fun review to listen to.
Kevin, this was an amazing review. You convey what you are tasting so well. The comparisons and analogies really enable me to share your impressions. The contrast between a young whiskey and a well aged whiskey came across clearly. I suspect as you do that the 30 day pressing makes the flake seemed more aged right out of the tin - rather like the difference between the taste of a lasagna on the evening that it is made versus the taste the next evening after the flavors have melded. Interesting observation on terminology. I think that many interpret special reserve as being the same as limited edition or small batch. Obviously, this Special Reserve Flake is not a limited edition. Hey, my friend - given the qualities that appealed to you in this blend, I have a cigar to recommend to you: Hoyo de Monterey de Jose Gener (Honduran) Maduro or Maduro Maduro in a larger ring size (a Sultan if you really want to experience it). I really think that you would like it. Chocolate, leather, pepper and sweet touch of creaminess even a touch of dates - absolutely delicious. Side note: I got distracted by the cardinal visiting one of your feeders. You seem to attract quite a few visitors. Again a wonderful review full of great information. Be well, stay safe, and keep on being your awesome self - peace
Great review Kevin. You had my mouth watering. I definitely have that on my list of a few tobaccos I will be buying in the next few weeks. Stay well, God bless.
Top shelf…that’s how I describe your videos…you descriptions are wonderful. A question…is there a website that you access to capture tobacco label art? Thanks so much for sharing. 👍😀
Hi HUM, I just do a google search on the tobacco name with “cellar label” and see what pops up in images and pick my favorite. If I don’t find an image I like there I then go to smokingpipes and see if they have one for it. Thank you for the compliment! :)
@@hobbitonpiper My pleasure! I weight my words. I really appreciate your approach. Absolutely no dogma! Continue your great work my friend. Have you ever tried GLP Gaslight? I prefer PP a little bit more but for totally different reasons. Gaslight is a different creature that I only lightup during rather cold autumn evenings, while smoking outside (especially when it's foggy). Another great heavy meal tobacco.
@@ernestpicasso7729 watch my review of Haunted Bookshop when you have time (reviews playlist), I think I tell a story of my first experience with Gaslight during that video… :)
Just purchased a tin yesterday so they are still making it :) After watching your awesome review, I just got that much more excited to try this! Been hearing very good things about it. I don't smoke alot so I think I'll be getting a humidor jar to keep it good
Great review, I really like the way you describe what you're tasting from the blends. Thank you for sharing, have a great weekend and happy independence day! Oh, and I think dates come from a species of palm trees. Take care
This sounds like something I would like to smoke in about one years time. I’ve only been smoking for a few months now so I’ll save for you pros out there. 😎 Happy Canada day!!! I’m enjoying some bayou morning today. Holy moly the tin note smells like sauerkraut or like a red vinegar style. But the smoke is just beautiful and honestly the perfect moisture. I love your stories buddy, explanations of tobacco, the videos of food. All that Kevin. Take care my friend.
Seattle Pipe Club reminds me a lot of the band KISS... they've done 20+ years of farewell tours... the "special reserve" blends from SPC is just going to be one of those blends that even though it's supposed to be "limited" it just keeps popping up back in stock on all the popular websites....
We just got some varieties of SPC in Canada. Working through a pipe full of Rainier Levant while watching your video- really enjoy it. Hey, what size of jars are those? 8oz?
@@hobbitonpiper Seems like it :) Though being in Canada, I was thinking of trying the Mississipi River first? Would love to read or hear your thoughts on it.
You had to mention whisky, now I have to once again do a taste test comparison with Ardbeg and Laphroaig 10yo’s. Depending upon the day of the week or the direction of the wind either one can come out on top.😂 I find it interesting that like me you have a whisky tasting background and that you can apply the palate honed in whisky tasting to the pipe smoking hobby, I thought it was only me Thanks once again. God bless
You’re such a great presenter, always enjoy your videos! I bought a few tins of PP when I started pipe smoking just over 1 1/2 yrs ago only because of all the hype, just to discover I’m not much of a latakia person at all. Now they just sit in my cellar🙁
Hello from the North of France Hobbiton, Well done for your nice video. I really like to follow your tastings. You live in a beautiful setting with these magnificent birds and these majestic trees. I would like to know where you find your pretty glass jars to keep your tobacco? Is there a site where I can order them? Don't change anything and good continuation of your channel !!!
Thank you so much Kim! I used to get my jars from my local WalMart department store, but recently found them at Target department stores online. They are “Ball” wide mouth mason jars, 8 oz I think? Thanks again, so glad u are enjoying! :)
@@hobbitonpiper Fantastic ! Thank you, I'm looking for ordering these mason jars online. I find them very beautiful ! It's very nice that we can personalize them :) Good evening !
I’ve since moved from Missouri but enjoyed my time there! Lots of helpful tips here, be sure to see the “How To” Playlists tab for many informative, relaxing videos
I’ve considered trying it but with the latakia I been hesistent being more into a Virginia based (eg Capstan Blue). Do the fruit notes balance well with the smokey latakia or is it heavy smoke with hints of subtle fruit notes that you really have to pick out?
I have! It’s excellent as well, but “bourbon barrel” is the overlaying flavor, and for me it does overpower some of the nuisances I’m used to enjoying in this series, BUT it’s great for what they were trying to do, which is basically turn PP into a bourbon aromatic without calling it an aromatic and they accomplished that. It’s good, if you like bourbon. It did seem to attack the back of my throat a bit and the other offerings do not. Not sure why.
Another fantastic review! Just bought a tin based on this. I love the way you label your jars. Do you use a printing template? Or just find the images on google? Currently trying to find the right image/fit for haunted book shop as well.
Hi Mark, thank you! I think you’ll really enjoy that tin :) I just use google to find images online, size them in a Microsoft Word document, print them on regular printer paper, cut em out and then use a kindergarten purple glue stick! They stay on perfectly but also peel off easy with no mess if I want to jar something different :)
Trial and error at first. I just created a black circle border in Microsoft Word and once I got the size right I just inserted label graphics inside them and size em to fill the circle however I want. :)
@@hobbitonpiperok, I’ve smoked several bowls of the Plum Pudding, now I’ll watch this again and see how what I experience compares to how you describe it.
Ok, I taste the campfire smoke, and the date but I wouldn’t have sensed the date if you hadn’t mentioned it. I don’t get the tomato. Your palate is interesting, I suspect you’re one of those super tasters, someone who tastes much more than the average person. I’d like to know your background, most people wouldn’t know the flavor of a date or sun dried tomatoes.
Ok, here I am again, watching this while smoking the Plum Pudding Special Reserve, I really do enjoy it. I’ve also tried the bourbon barrel aged and find it exciting. Yesterday I opened for the first time a tin of Mac Baren’s Stockton Spun Cut, wow, the tin note of sun dried tomato was overwhelming. I was amazed and enjoyed it. Your videos have done so much in helping me along my journey during this first year of pipe smoking. I know making videos for RUclips can be time consuming, thank you so very much for your efforts.
Enjoying Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Plum Pudding SR this evening nearly as much as your articulate descriptions subtly interwoven with reminiscent storytelling.
I own five bottles of Ardbeg myself (Wee Beastie, Ten, An Oa, Uigeadail, Corryvrekan) and enjoy them all! Thank you so much for the kind words, I’m so glad you enjoyed!
@@benjamincarter6095 I’ve had Laphroaig 10 (I much prefer Ardbeg), never had the Lore but hear it’s good. I’m a big fan of Lagavulin 16 and have had several other offerings from that distillery
I actually like your label idea better than mine. I bought sheets of sticker paper for my printer and it’s dang near impossible to get it off the lids. Glue stick 1 ganjiuana 0 🤣 take care man! ✌️😗💨
Ok. Plum Pudding. My love hate relationship with Plum Pudding. First of all I would suggest if you never had a date you need to try them. I live in an area that has a very large Muslim Arabic population. This means we have a lot of Mediterranean food available. For us, dates, figs, hummus, grape leaves, shawarma, are all readily available at any store. Anyway Plum Pudding. I bought the Special Reserve from Smoking Pipes. Muttnchop Piper said it was one of the best blends ever made. It’s one of those blends that when you watch any pipe smoking video it’s always on the shelf behind whoever is talking. Like Orlik Golden Slice. Anyway I got it. Out of the tin it was very gooey. All the flakes where melded together into a large lump. When I picked it up and tried to separate one they started falling apart. So I basically torn the limp apart into large stringy pieces and put in a mason jar. When I tried to smoke it it was so gooey you could roll it into a ball. Like dough. Impossible to light and keep lit. It didn’t taste good because trying to keep it lit burned it. Not a good first experience. So next one I actually took some out and let it sit for like 30 min to dry out. This helped greatly. Also learning the “breath method” helped. This needs to be sipped carefully. Or so I found. It goes out a lot still. But I’m sipping and letting it dry out you get the favors. I get a fig/date thing as well. Tomatoes? Hmmm maybe. I’ll have to have it again. But what I got? Worcestershire Sauce. But not a bad thing. I’ve had trouble smoking this one because I’m newer to pipe smoking in general and this was my first flake. I can let you know later when I try it again. It’s been sitting in the jar for a few months now. I’m still not sure how to properly pack it. When I do the top still feels gooey and hard to light. Anyway I would recommend if you are an intermediate Piper like me maybe find someone to help you with this one. I want to like Plum Pudding. I really do. I just need to figure it out.
Just received the flake version in the mail today. So, naturally, I came to watch your review. Lol Currently puffing on my first bowl. Very reminiscent of Mac Baren's Plum Cake without the overwhelming rum topping. Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding is a definite must-try.
Sorry - this is off the topic - but I really appreciate your knowledge and experience, and would like your thoughts. My first bowl was actually a fairly good experience, but my second not so much. Most of the smoke tasted like an ashtray and then afterwards I couldn’t get that taste out my mouth for about 24 hours. That was a bit discouraging, but I know it must have to do with some fault in my part. Smoking too hot? The bowl did get pretty hot a couple times. Then I’m so thinking I started smoking ash toward the end because I was concerned about creating a carbon coat that I was under the impression I need in a new pipe?
Kevin, you're a good man. I respect you, but Plum Pudding is a lot of Hype. Sorry, it's good but not great. My opinion. Olive Garden ? You can have it. Take care.

So jealous right now! This tin is currently at the top of my wish list!!
Sounds amazing!!!
I think you’ll enjoy it when you get it!! :)
SPC really puts out great stuff. I love all the PP, but haven’t tried the flake yet. Now I can’t wait. Great review.
Cool Ethan! I think you’ll really enjoy the flakes, fun stuff :) Thank you!
Many thanks for your great video! 👍🔥🍂
Thank you Ernest and thanks for being here!
Just purchased a tin yesterday so they are still making it :)
After watching your awesome review, I just got that much more excited to try this! Been hearing very good things about it. I don't smoke alot so I think I'll be getting a humidor jar to keep it good
Ball Mason jar is the way to go. Be sure to see my 2-part How To Cellar series in the How To playlist!
Great review, I really like the way you describe what you're tasting from the blends.
Thank you for sharing, have a great weekend and happy independence day!
Oh, and I think dates come from a species of palm trees.
Take care
Nice, Chip! Thank you so much for watching the reviews, it makes the effort well worth it to know you are enjoying!
This sounds like something I would like to smoke in about one years time. I’ve only been smoking for a few months now so I’ll save for you pros out there. 😎
Happy Canada day!!!
Thank you for the encouragement JS! That means so much to me :) have an awesome day :)
Seattle Pipe Club reminds me a lot of the band KISS... they've done 20+ years of farewell tours... the "special reserve" blends from SPC is just going to be one of those blends that even though it's supposed to be "limited" it just keeps popping up back in stock on all the popular websites....
Haha GREAT comparison! Love it! :) And so true
another quality video thank you
You’re so welcome Dana! Really happy to see you here today, thank you :)
We just got some varieties of SPC in Canada. Working through a pipe full of Rainier Levant while watching your video- really enjoy it. Hey, what size of jars are those? 8oz?
Yes! Very low profile tho, difficult to find at a decent price here now it seems
The leather is definitely there. Haven’t gotten the dates, but I do get pepper and a woodsy feel too
That’s great Scott! I think this blend is really done well
Only tried the barrel aged version but it is so far one my favorite blends.
The Special Reserve Flake is worth a try then! :)
Depending upon the day of the week or the direction of the wind either one can come out on top.😂
I find it interesting that like me you have a whisky tasting background and that you can apply the palate honed in whisky tasting to the pipe smoking hobby, I thought it was only me
Thanks once again.
God bless
It’s not just you! :) I do prefer Ardbeg 10 over Laphroaig 10 but that’s just me
I have some of this on the way. I ordered that and a tin of Bengal Slices. I can’t wait. Lol.
Awesome Curtis! Great choices. You’ll love these I think :)
Great presentation as always. Going to buy a tin from my local shop this week. But, most importantly...What pipe is that? It looks awesome!

Great job.
Thanks! :)
You’re such a great presenter, always enjoy your videos!
I bought a few tins of PP when I started pipe smoking just over 1 1/2 yrs ago only because of all the hype, just to discover I’m not much of a latakia person at all. Now they just sit in my cellar🙁
Yeah if you don’t like Latakia you need to avoid this one….the leather and campfire are there for sure :) Thank you for the kind words!!
Hello from the North of France Hobbiton,
Well done for your nice video.
It's very nice that we can personalize them :)
Good evening !
One of my favorites!
Awesome Bob, great to see you! Hope I did one of your favorites justice! :)
I just bought my first Tin of it and I love it
Awesome! Good choice, brother, good choice indeed :)
What part of Missouri you in?? Enjoy the PLUM a lot…. Newly engaged pipe smoker here… love to hear your tips?
I’ve since moved from Missouri but enjoyed my time there! Lots of helpful tips here, be sure to see the “How To” Playlists tab for many informative, relaxing videos
I’ve considered trying it but with the latakia I been hesistent being more into a Virginia based (eg Capstan Blue). Do the fruit notes balance well with the smokey latakia or is it heavy smoke with hints of subtle fruit notes that you really have to pick out?
I’ve described it here in this video as best I can. If you’re focused on the Latakia then you’re certainly going to taste that smoky component
Again great review👍🏻 may I ask you question? Is there a limit of bowl a day? And how many you smoke a day? Because i am little bit heavy smoker🤷🏻♂️
That’s up to you
@@hobbitonpiper I know that, but is there any advice or reasonable range?
@@Cigardoo completely based on your enjoyment. Just never inhale and never burn your mouth/throat.
@@hobbitonpiper sure! I will never inhale pipe tobacco, thank you so much and have a good day!
Do you have a link to those mason jars? What size are they?
@@MrOneballjay02 they are squat size 8oz ball mason jars but are unfortunately discontinued
Great review. Have you tried their bourbon barrel aged? If so, how does that compare?
@@hobbitonpiper sounds good. Thanks for that!
@@hobbitonpiper thank you!
I was wanting to know what brand and size the jar is you use?
Unfortunately the 8oz Ball mason jars in the squat size have been discontinued :(
How do you get the label to be the right size for the lid?
Trial and error at first. I just created a black circle border in Microsoft Word and once I got the size right I just inserted label graphics inside them and size em to fill the circle however I want. :)
@@hobbitonpiper wow! That’s pretty clever. I don’t think I have those skills ….looks like I will sticking to the envelope labels for now 😂
I love ardbeg too!
I may have to drink some tonight! :)
Watching this I’m smoking my first Plum Pudding in a 1960’s era Castello, the third Castello of my grand father’s pipes.
@@theflyfishingnomad9641 very cool!
@@theflyfishingnomad9641 a lot of that info is within this detailed presentation!:

Ok, here I am again, watching this while smoking the Plum Pudding Special Reserve, I really do enjoy it. I’ve also tried the bourbon barrel aged and find it exciting. Yesterday I opened for the first time a tin of Mac Baren’s Stockton Spun Cut, wow, the tin note of sun dried tomato was overwhelming. I was amazed and enjoyed it. Your videos have done so much in helping me along my journey during this first year of pipe smoking. I know making videos for RUclips can be time consuming, thank you so very much for your efforts.
I don't think I've tried that. I only really love Eileen's Dream & like cult conspiracy. I should give aromatics more of a chance.
This one is a Balkan/English…pretty good stuff :)
@@hobbitonpiper Nice collection! Have you tried Laphroaig Lore? That and Lagavulin round out my favorite Islay scotches.
@@benjamincarter6095 I’ve had Laphroaig 10 (I much prefer Ardbeg), never had the Lore but hear it’s good. I’m a big fan of Lagavulin 16 and have had several other offerings from that distillery

@@hobbitonpiper that’s just what I need in my life. I learned something new today. Win win!
Oh, that's brilliant! I'm stealing your idea.
@@gard751 do it!! :)
How do I do this.I would love for my jars to have the actual label.Any help is much appreciated.
This one does take time to get comfortable with!
So glad you’re enjoying it!!

You my friend are incredibly in-tune with your senses. I feel so out of touch with my own pallet.
You can improve on that over time!
