"So I think the SmartBoy is a pretty mixed bag..."
I know I am kind of off topic but do anybody know a good site to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Canaan Adriel Flixportal :P
@Ira Memphis thanks, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there =) I really appreciate it!!
@Canaan Adriel Happy to help =)

this is one of the things i need!!
after watching:
oww... never mind
Same too because sue not portable on apple IPHONE

Haynes _Blue the app they use is a emulator, emulators is not allowed on the app store
I have one in my hand right now. I got it working perfectly with John Ness (NES emulator). Don't have any GB carts to test on it. I mostly got it because I want to play NES and Sega MS/GEN games on it. Haven't got a single Sega emulator to work on it. It's very frustrating having half the screen blocked, but that would not be a problem if this thing connected with Bluetooth because it would load automatically and you wouldn't have to scroll through menus. I'll probably end up sending it back to Amazon and see if I can build my own bluetooth cradle controller for it.
@@geniedumal2974 Pro Tip: uninstall the smartboy app. Download my boy and my old boy. Configure the buttons within the app. Then to remove the annoying pop ups that appear when you connect the phone to the smartboy you have to pull down the top menu and change the usb settings. This will allow you to play GB, GBC and GBA roms.
This thing really needs it's own software to reach its full potential, such a awesome idea let down by lack of support.
How is it piracy if it's a game you own? They're your own damn rom dumps!
I believe according to nintendo, making roms of games you own is still technically illegal.
Theyll never persue an individual doing this though, they only go after rom sites and even then they dont do it often.
EXACTLY
Why is it illegal to make backups?
@@LaskyLabs its in nintendos copyright.
Again though its a legal grey area. Nintendo has never actually persued anyone over making personal use rom dumps. Only the sites that provide free downloads of them.
It doesn't make sense. Since laws about emulating are confusing. It's somehow illegal and legal to emulate the physical game.
The only clear legal way to play any game is to play it on the original console or backwards compatible consoles. But I personally don't care, and so shouldn't hyperkin
...so it's still just an April fool's joke.
Mr Heck true
Lol
...yes?
April fool's!
"We went out and got a Galaxy S8"
I know you meant that you borrowed someone else's Galaxy, but I love how the phrasing implies that you went and bought one specifically for this review
Yeah imagine if he paid the phone for the review and then he left it lol.
That’s something Ashens would do.
But... if you make a rom of a game that you physically own... that's not piracy. On top of everything else in this clusterfuck, what the hell is Hyperkin smoking?
Yes IIRC you're allowed legally allowed to make backups of media that you own. It just has to be only for personal use when you do so, you can't distribute them.
@ Alexander idk but what hyperkin is thinking but even the cheapest Android game controllers support Bluetooth because the person who plays retro games typically needs the USB ports for charging and people playing retro games often use Android tablets.
@The SNES Man what about the game boy classic?
They be smoking *VIRTUAL BOIS*
True. Maybe they did it for fear of illegal distribution. Still completely unnecessary because these ROM's are accessible to anyone online, for free.
Good idea in theory but botched in execution. It just needed more time and care in development.
@Blur4strike The my old boy hardware needs a hammer. If the hammer dose not work you might try putting it your trash can so the garbage man will burry it for good.
Welp its an April fool after all
Hey, just want you to know I bought the 8BITDO SF30 Pro Bluetoot Controller based off your review and I love it! I'm actually playing Smash Ultimate right now! Thanks!
I bought the N30 Pro controller and it works really well
Same, but in my case it was the 8BitDo SN30 Pro wired.
Rerez angry review stepping into AVGN territory.
He's the Angry Hyperkin Nerd!
What were they thinking!
Nah... Nerd is funny. This guy is shrill and whiney
Sort of, except Shane goes a bit more into the technical stuff.
This is what happens when you make an April Fools Joke into a real product.
My iCade would agree with you!
Really, a piracy warning? I get piracy isn't good but I don't need Big Brother Hyperkin telling me that especially when it's a dump of the game I physically own. Doesn't even look that impressive anyhow, I can get better mileage and a more comfortable feel with an Xbox One controller with all the buttons mapped and all the benefits of the controller's very impressive D-pad.
You know what be better? If while removing the card it would just back up in the menu, it would make switching games easy
or just not install the hyperkin software and it never gives you the warning
Hyperkin got sued for making the Retron 5, a device that uses illegally distributed emulation software taken from SNES9X and other sources. I really don't think Hyperkin gets to warn us about piracy when they're guilty of it themselves.
"I don't think they even care about the rom files, because you can download them pretty much everywhere!"
Nintendo: Hold my beer.
Oh great. Another very original "Hold My Beer" comment.
Unfortunately for Nintendo, if it's on the internet, it's on there forever.
I've been using the old boy app for years its great and I'm Glad to see one of my favorite acknowledge it
So 4 years later it's still available and works perfectly, don't even have to unzip the roms..... Wow!!!
Finally time to sit back with a grape soda and watch some Rerez on my tv! :D
"swing and a miss" decent idea
I swear sometimes while watching your videos, I expect to hear you say "What were they thinking?!" -AVGN
Interesting. I've seen this contraption advertised on Facebook to hell and back.
I've been wary on investing. Thanks for doing it for us, Shane!
Why doesn't the piracy warning pop up when you are ripping a CD in iTunes? It's almost like it's legal to copy your own digital stuff. Even with the Analogue Super Nt you can dump your ROMs... :-p
Always love the depth you go for these reviews. Another great video!
That looks a lot bulkier than the design art
LinkToo Well the design art was originaly a april fools joke. So i mean you cant be too mad
Meme The Fox I think there was one after that too
So was the original gameboy
Keep up the good quality man ❤️
the frustrated acting in this was like in those info-mercials lol
Doesn't have it's own emulator, not buying it. Thanks, your reviews are always very fact-based and non-biased, even when the product doesn't live up to expectations.
Nate C W Go Avs 👍
Bruh, im loving this channel! Awesome content, great work, keep it up!
Summed up: Hyperkin will always shoot themselves in the foot somehow.
Avoid.
However; thank you for a great video!
Always happy to see another video love the channel
"Dur hur piracy bad you no pirate 25+ year old game" -Hyperkin
You _could_ enable 180° rotation to access most of the screen.
I can fully understand your fusturations. Using my own ROMs and the .emu emulators, I have personally had a great time, including using the shoulder buttons for GBA games. It isn't absolutely perfect, but it is a definite "consider if the cons are worth it" to me.
Nicely done video Shane!
At least it's good for one thing, dumping ROM files.
but only for gb and gbc roms since gba games dont work
its pretty, it was mainly aimed at the galaxy s8 and s9, but does work with quite a lot of devices
Hey Shane, are you still going to do THE HOOK? or is that over with? I loved watching you guys talk games and whatever else.
Perhaps try using RetroArch? It's designed to be used with only a controller and you can set a custom viewport to only use the visible part of the screen. Also, you might be able to remove the SmartBoy's overlay permissions to remove the warning.
Well honestly the Android emulation scene outside of RetroArch is kinda on the scummy side anyways.
I have good experience with GBC.emu, all the way when KitKat was the going version of Android.
Eh retro is general but separate emulators have different features
Guys, just use RetroArch and download GBA and GBC emulator cores. It's free, and is regularly updated!
@6 GORILLION same here. Retroarch is so confusing
Even when it was an April Fool's joke, I just thought "What is the point of this thing?"
“But does it run old Harvest Mo-“ [sees advertising pics]
About the trigger buttons, you have to manually customize it. My Boy! (and My OldBoy!) emulator has a button mapping for controllers and for some reason, the L and R button for this device was Y and X and not L1 and R1 (according to My Boy! emulator). Is on the Settings menu, by the way. Then "Input" and then "Key mapping". You can also customize virtual controller here. When customize, you don't need to worry about cropping from the attachment device.
They should have made that plate with the buttons flip down so you could access the screen when you need to.
Really detailed review!
I love my 8bitdo FC30. Especially with the clip accessory, it's near perfect for emulation on phones.
Get an SN30 Pro+. It's the same price, but it's a wireless controller that is mainly for the switch, but it CAN connect to android or PC. It also has all the buttons a standard controller would now. Also, there is a gameboy styled version, if you like the colors or the style of the dpad.
Edit: I forgot to add one thing, this is the same controller shown at 8:36, but with handles. It's been shown off on this channel before I'm pretty sure.
Remember the time when Nintendo ROMS were easy to find. The good times.
well it's still pretty easy... there are just so many stupid people who actually double click files like SuperMarioBros.gb.exe -.-
Another episode where Rerez suffered from bad product.
Hearing you get progressively aggressive towards it just made my day xD, I'm sorry this was a painful experience
Wanna play Game Boy games on-the-go digitally without the "guilt of piracy"? Get them on the 3DS!
Just the way I like it!
And for those who don't know (I didn't until I saw an article online) If you hold the start or select buttons on the 3DS while starting a non-3DS game, it will play it in it's native resolution, with for at least the game boy games, a game boy border art. Though it might work better on the 3DS xl.
I didn't know that, thanks for the info!
+Kryasil Yeah I think I found out about that thanks to Nintendo Show 3D back when that was a thing.
+Michirin9801 Well, no, because not all 1,600+ games for the Game Boy and Game Boy Colour have been rereleased by Nintendo on the 3DS.
The Smartboy in the image looked like something out of Game Dev Tycoon.
Good video Fred Savage
@1:43 amazing transition!!!!
Thank you for the information. You saved me some cash and I am going to stick with my 8bit controller for my phone gaming needs.
Designed for Samsung?
I have an old Samsung flipphone from the early 2000’s, and I’m totally trying that with one of these.
I also have a 20 dollar phone from Samsung. Hell yeah i will buy this.
So how it go?
@@Dylan-jp9mr Since they never responded I assume well because they are probably playing Pokemon
Anon Anon epic
It's an April Fool's prank turned into an actual prank..joke's on you for buying the POS! LOL
My wallet smiled while reading this :)
He is a big enough channel that he prob got it for free.
@@mikemiken1963 He literally said he bought it at the start of the video
a solution to this is easy, use a switch Playstand (the hori one) put your phone there, get a USB type C extension and BAM you've got yourself a gamepad that doesn't obscure the screen, although anything else will work as long as it props your phone up.
yeah seriously, who doesn't have a USB C extension cord?
Great review
hay did you know that they said if there is a pop up on the screen they said do down and b button
I looove the game boy.
I also love this new all controller that I bought when it released a year ago on schedule.
Oh wait.
intro sound be like: MROW
Thanks to this video. I found the two game boy emulators. So thanks rerez!
I just bought a PowerA Moga smartphone adapter for xbox one controllers and it works amazingly well. I can clip my phone onto an xbox one controller and connect with bluetooth, and it works with every emulator. The only problem is that putting it down is difficult with the phone mounted. And it can be hard to find the perfect angle for the phone. I just took a knife and made a little score mark on the joints so that I can line it up in the perfect spot every time.
Now I can finally play all the gamecube games I never had the opportunity to play as a kid.
*I use multi-emulator to play everything from PS1 games to really old school NES games and handhelds from original Gameboy to DS. The biggest issue I have is that some games don't feel right with the digital controller but I'm sure the emulator has compatible controllers but I've only tried to find them once at Walmart with no luck.*
*But for the most part it plays a lot of games find, especially turn based games like pokemon.*
it is a super nice emulator. I have a few controllers that work with it, mainly through usb dongles.
I was gonna buy this cause it looked cool but I saw this as a result when I googled the product thanks for the warnings man.
This sounds like an AVGN review. It's hilarious!
can't believe I have contemplated buying this.
love yor videos!!!!!!!!!!!
I personally really liked this, it's my preferred way to play my gameboy games. It's frustrating to use at times, but I enjoy it. I feel like it would be improved if the control pad could be swiveled to access the full touch screen when necessary. It is mostly a novelty item, yes, but I'm very prone to nostalgia purchases
U are 666 th comment
Has any company released anything since?
@@skycloud4802 nothing like this, but there's plenty of dedicated retro gaming handhelds on the market rn
Thanks for the warning. I was considering whether to get it or not at one point.
I don't need it.
I don't need it. .
I don't need it. . .
I *definetly* don't need it. . . .
*I NEEEEEEED ITTTTT!!!*
No, You want it because it looks cool. It's not.
No
This device is pretty cool. I just wish it wasn't so buggy
Also, to see if the triggers even work (while it is quite the hassle) you could just turn on a visual touch feedback from the developer settings on every Android ever and download a screen recording app and see where the screen has been touched. That is then where you'd place your touch L/R buttons and et voila you can now play GBA.
I bought an ipega controller that extends so that it can hold my phone both on landscape and portrait modes and it is just perfect for retro gaming emulation, I can comfortably play DS games vertically and SNES games horizontally.
I cannot wait for my Black Shark to arrive to try GameCube, 3DS and PS2 games with this controller.
Did you try the included usb extension to set the keys in other emu before connecting phone to gamepad directly?
Okay, here's the thing nobody says and it's kinda unfair for the device.
First of all, at least at my case, there was a cable that came with my SmartBoy that you can connect your phone to the SmartBoy without having to put your phone inside the bay. That allows you to re-assign buttons to any and all emulators that allow you to do so. I don't know why NOBODY says it in their reviews. Are they NOT receiving theirs? Are they getting older versions? Do they really ignore it and just shove a phone inside? I don't really know but it solves, like, half of the problems everybody seems to have with this device.
Secondly, why isn't anybody use the float button. You know, that little white nub android has and you can toggle on and off right from the notification area. You can pretty much control all basic interface like app switching. Yeah, there'll be a little shitty white nub but you can half-hide it under the controller and still be accessible. So you can pretty much switch apps and control interfaces much easier.
So I don't know why is this device so misunderstood. It's not perfect, don't get me wrong, but it's not half as bad as the whole internet made it to be!
RetroMario Kinda pointless to have to be tethered to it the entire time. Gameboy is supposed to be about portability. Having to connect the phone and Smartboy via cable defeats the whole purpose of the thing. With all due respect.
Still then you could change the settings and then plug it normally?
RetroMario Right??
Oh no, you don't need to have it tethered all the time with the cable. Just for the initial setup and the key bindings. Once the settings for your emulators are saved you just tuck the cable in a drawer and you're ready to enjoy your games on the go. You'll only have to use it again if an app update takes your settings away or you're trying a new emulator.
I received mine as a present last January and it included that cable. I also tried to connect it to my PC only to find out that it's recognised as a usb NES controller and a serial port device. :P
As always. Another great review and a save for my wallet
Ah, just to clarify, i believe my boy came before my oldboy
They should make a transparent version so you can see the full screen
I wish they had a SNES controller that you can just use for roms like this one
I really REALLY wish Hyperkin made a Smartboy that was compatible with my iPad mini. I would also add a Game Boy Advance cartridge slot so I can play Game Boy Advance Game in addition to Game Boy and Game Boy Color games (that would make proper use of those left and right trigger buttons).
Maybe Hyperkin can omit the piracy issues that Rerez described when making this new Smartboy.
Hmm, have you tried rotating your phone 180 degrees to get to that bottom half of menu screen?
2:20 Ah, that there is what we call a "clamper".
But thanks anyways for helping me avoid another dud product I was curious about!
Firestarter Same.
When you see your console on rerez and you realize before watching that you made a mistake 🤣
By "your" console do you mean you bought it or made it lmao 🤣😂😆
My boy is my favorite emulator for Android. There is link cable emulation over Bluetooth and it is amazing!
Why didn't you try turning the phone the opposite way to make the close button show up on the visible side?
fit it with a usb extension cable to see if you can configure the menu's
the rom read function likely doesn't actually read the rom from the cartridge , just matches it to one in the catalogue.
if your just looking to play carts, the gba sp goes for between 23 and 60 on ebay, and local shop probably has them even cheaper
makes me wonder if you put a usb C extension cable to the port in the smart boy to the phone so you could have the phone outside of the case... I know stupid just curious
Did you try that with Retroarch? Once the games stars you have no warnings and more important you can set the buttons as you want.
Why not continue to turn the screen until the OK or CANCEL option is visible from the pop up? You don’t need to take the phone out completely
k, but what if you get a phone call or whatever. kinda is a pain to take it out and put back in right?
It came with a cord. Its not so bad.
Ever since this was created, Hyperkin stayed that they would release this for the iPhone and it still hasn’t happened yet
I wonder if a usb extender could help adjust settings since the phone could be connected without inhibiting the screen
Love that Essential phone,
The essential phone? Oh yeah. My grandma has that phone.
I literally saw that thing that my local Vincent. Lmao
Can you enter split-screen mode to have the emulator run on only the top half of the screen? I don't remember if My OldBoy supports that.
Actually you don't have to take your phone out of the case. When you need to select those menus, press A to accept the message and if you reposition the touch buttons, it will solve most of those issues.
For anyone using this thing, you'd probably be better off getting another controller. But if you already own one, my suggestion is getting a small USB C extension cable so that the menu can be accessed for the menu options, or outright use the full screen, but of course, by doing that, it's no longer a handheld console, but just another regular controller.
I feel like this product went viral on Facebook. Always thought it looked clumsy, cheap and more cumbersome than just bringing an actual gameboy.
Plus gameboys seem to never break and you can find one for like $10
I have never run into any of those issues. Mine works great with the my old boy and the my boy emulator. I use roms for both of those emulators and I never get that piracy notice. As long as you close out the smart boy software. You can use those two emulators and run your roms with no problem at all. I enjoy mine and did two videos on this product on my channel as well. To each his own though.
The best part was that he was using the essential phone
What you have is portable rom ripper, assuming you can copy the rom to a new location after it copies it to the game from the cartridge.
